About this property

Beachfront East End of St John

Seahaven is one of 50 private home sites located in St. John's exclusive, East End community of Privateer Bay. One of the most beautiful places in the world and carefully designed to stay that way. Seahaven and the other east facing lots feature a stunning panorama of the British Virgin Island Chain.
Beautiful Privateer Bay Beach is on site or Newfound Beach and the famous North Shore beaches are a short drive away. Scuba, snorkeling, swimming, beach combing on site. Panoramic views of Privateer Bay and British Virgin Islands from expansive decks. Seasonal Infinity Pool (Dec to May), Internet, Smart TV, Books, games, etc. Gas grill, dishwasher, MW, toaster, blender, beach chairs, Sleeps 4. 1 King bed in each room can be converted to two twin beds. Air-Conditioning and Ceiling fans in each bedroom. Inside and outside dining.

The rental unit is the private lower level of our home with separate private access and dedicated off-street parking. We may or may not be in residence during your stay.

Our home was built to withstand 330 MPH winds and we therefore experienced very minimal damage to our roof gutters and a few decking boards during the 2017 storms. The damaged gutters and decking has been replaced with new material. Solar power was added after the storms for essential services.

Scuba and Snorkeling: The beach on site is accessible for scuba and snorkeling. You can walk to the beach in 3 to 4 minutes from the house or drive your car with-in several feet of the beach for offloading of gear. Expansive reef starting ten feet offshore. Water depths from 3 feet sloping gradually to 100 feet plus within several hundred yards. Visibility varies up to 100 feet plus. Point to left of beach has drop off for wall diving. Within several minutes by boat to 'The Indians', the 'Wreck of the Rhone' and the 'Caves' of Norman Island.

Beaches: Villa is situated on Privateer Bay Beach. It is a short 3 to 4 minute walk down the driveway to the beach. Newfound Beach which is also part of the Privateer Bay Homeowners Association is just a short three min drive away. Both beaches are private and are maintained by PBHA. The famous and popular 'North Shore' beaches, Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Honeymoon and others are just a short drive up Centerline Road to the North Shore Road.

Dining: Several very good restaurants are located in Coral Bay which is just 5 miles away. Cruz Bay which is 13 miles away has many more restaurants for your dining pleasure.

Seahaven Stay

Our stay at Seahaven was great! Bob and his property manager, KM were fantastic to work with. Bob is an honest and super friendly host and we would stay there again! It is on the far east side of the island which is very peaceful and friendly. It is a bit of drive to Cruz Bay but we knew that ahead of time and the drive along the North Shore road is just stunning! Enjoy your stay at Seahaven!

Vacation in paradise

Bob is an excellent host. They fully stock the house with coolers ice packs and kitchen staples. The beds were comfortable. The house was spotless as were the grounds . The pictures of them are on their deck. The rental deck isn’t large at all The north shore beaches are a good 45 min ride

Great Option on the East End

We loved our stay at Seahaven! Bob was a great host, meeting us when we checked in to show us around the apartment. He was home (upstairs) throughout our stay but gave us privacy. The house has good WiFi and AC units in the main living room as well as in each bedroom. The WiFi and several outlets have backup solar power in the event of a power outage. The kitchen has pretty much everything you need to make dinner and a propane grill is just downstairs from the deck. The two bedrooms were perfect for my wife and I as well as our two kids (9 and 11). The pictures of the view from the apartment don’t do it justice! It does take some time to get to the house (45 minutes from Cruz Bay and 30-40 minutes to the north beaches) but it’s totally worth it! You can’t beat the views while driving to the house or the remoteness once you get there.

Peace, Beauty and Adventure ARE the Ultimate Luxuries

Bob met us at Hansen Bay Beach to allow us to follow him to the Villa and, as we followed, it was hard to contain our wonder even after the long day of travel from Atlanta. On our prior trips to St John, we thought a mountain villa overlooking Coral Bay was remote and peaceful, had never ventured to Hansen, this time Hansen was just the starting point as the panoramas unfolded and driving the goat and donkey filled roads became a much-loved daily feature of our days on St John. The views from the villa are an ever changing private, unspoiled panorama. The short walk to, and long walks on coral-strewn Privateer beach was daily photo op. /We had everything we needed, and loved sharing the experience with our daughter and son-in-law. If you love adventure, privacy and beauty, book this villa for life-long memories.

Seahaven was heaven

Views were awesome. Waking up everyday and drinking coffee and watching the sunrise over the point was worth every penny. We had all we needed and communication was excellent with the owners and property manager.

Peaceful retreat

My family had an amazing stay at this beautiful property. The views were incredible and the property was immaculate and well appointed with everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. The owner was great and super helpful providing information on nearby shops, restaurants, good places to snorkel and directions. Looking forward to a return visit .

Privacy in Paradise

If possible, these photos don't quite do justice to Seahaven. The house itself is perfectly appointed and very comfortably laid out. The view over Privateer Bay is priceless, as is the star-strewn night sky, seen from the amiable porch hammock. The easy walk to the beach is not quite five minutes. Mattresses are great. Note: when you plan your day trips, the house is about a 15-20 minute drive to Coral Bay, so bear that in mind. The pool is quite small--not really for swimming. The beach is rounded stones, so wear footgear. But do go and bring your snorkel! It's magical. Moreover, we crave privacy and quiet and that is the great gift of this lovely house. Supplies included: coffee filters, toilet paper, paper towels, salt/pepper, shampoo, soap, beach towels and chairs, gazillions of books, DVDs, board games and very thoughtfully compiled lists of local resources. Super owners. Each morning we'd wake up and say, "How did we get so lucky and find this place?"

Amazing!

So amazing! I know the island well and was very much looking forward to staying at Privateer Bay. This property is away from it all, which is exactly what we want. There is one house below, but you would never know it by sound etc. The view and bay are so beautiful, the snorkeling is awesome, I even saw an octopus, which is not common to see. The house itself is gorgeous, tongue-in-groove wood throughout, windows all across the front so no view is blocked. It is completely stocked, I bought all the things I thought I would need, TP, paper towels, dish soap etc. waste of my money, they had it for us. Even a welcome bag in the fridge. Excellent entertainment system, dvd's, books. An incredibly comfortable house. I had friends over for a cookout, and it was the perfect house for entertaining. Very spacious and well laid out. I highly recommend, and I will go back! Also, communicating with the owners was easy and their response time quick. I am thoroughly impressed with Seahaven!

Adventurists Paradise!

My husband and I spent our Honeymoon here and everything about SeaHaven Villa made our stay feel magical! We especially enjoyed the secluded area and almost completely private bays in the area. The snorkeling was amazing, we saw sea turtles, dozens of species of fish, and giant star fish just like the photo above! Star gazing at night in the hammock was unforgettable, and it was so nice coming home to the villa after long days of hiking and swimming on the island to grill fresh fish on the balcony and listen to the sea. This home is equipped with everything you need to have a perfect vacation and we truly could not have asked for more. The owners were wonderful to work with and very helpful, along with the poperty manager, they made everything easy and carfree, just the kind of experience you are looking for when trying to relax! Thank you so much for everything, we can't wait to come back!

Great snorkeling, beautiful view, privacy

Our family of six (four kids of all ages) spent a week at this home in late June, 2010. The home is in a remote location, in fact it is the last home on the island as far east as you can go. Getting around the island really isn't that bad. We did not have a four wheel drive, and we did fine. It's about forty five minutes to Cruz Bay (with lots of restaurants and complete grocery shopping, and fifteen minutes to a few restaurants and limited grocery shopping. The privacy here is fantastic. We had the entire bay to ourselves the whole week. The beach is pebbles, not sand. The snorkeling is fantastic, and we are picky snorkelers so that's really saying something. We saw a wide variety of marine life, including squid, lobsters, large schools of tangs, damsels, and a variety of corals. It was a little too rough for snorkeling the last two days we were there. The pool is TINY but the kids didn't care. It kept them entertained for hours. The home is comfortable, with great views, a kitchen we cooked great meals in, and an extensive video collection. Every night was movie night! Outside, mosquitos were quite a nuisance, but that was the case all over the island and not the fault of this property, but it made hanging outside on the deck not so desirable, at least not without bugspray. We learned pretty quickly to have a can of bugspray on hand at all times, even when traveling to different beaches (get out of the car, and start spraying!). Our only complaint about this property is the showers. The faucet is the kind that shuts off by itself after about four seconds. So to shower, you have to either hold down the knob with one hand, or press it every four seconds. The water is barely hot and comes out as little more than a trickle. We understand that it's a dry island, water is trucked in or is collected rain water, very expensive, and perhaps the owners did what they could to discourage long showers. It worked! We dealt with it, but a nice soothing shower after a day at the beach was a creature comfort that was sorely missing. All in all, this is a fantastic property with stunning views, easy ocean access, and luxurious privacy. The owners and property managers were a pleasure to deal with. We would come back, and recommend this property to others.

Great time at Seahaven

We thoroughly enjoyed our weeklong stay at Seahaven. The house is beautiful, well-maintained, and comfortable. We loved the privacy of the location, and we had the beach completely to ourselves. The views are amazing. The drive from Cruz Bay is scenic and fun, with overlooks, goats, rainbows, etc. Some restaurants, bars, and stores are even closer to the house, in nearby Coral Bay. We highly recommend Seahaven!

Private Beachfront Villa

Our family has stayed at Seahaven several times and absolutely love it. The Villa is located just above a very private beach. We love the privacy afforded by the fact that the home is one of only a handful of homes built so far in a private homeowners association that is 15 minutes from the nearest "town". The winding drive from town is one of the most scenic drives in the Virgin Islands with views of the Bristish Virgin Islands from the top of ridges one minute and breathtaking beach views driving right along the water the next. Very few "tourists" make it out to the East End making it like being on a deserted island most days. We have stayed at Seahaven several times and each time Privateer Bay Beach was calm and offered some of the best snorkeling in the islands. We can't wait to go back.

Seahaven is great!

My husband and I stayed at Seahaven with two of our best friends, and it was a great trip! We had the most relaxing week! We loved how secluded and private the house is. It is truly an oasis. It epitomizes "paradise." The trip began with a beautiful ferry ride to St. John. Once on the island we rented a car and enjoyed the scenic route to the house. Along the way we enjoyed breathtaking views, friendly wildlife, and fun restaurants and bars. We were blown away by the expansive views at the house. It seemed like you can see forever on the porch and from nearly every room in the house. The house is well appointed with comfortable furnishings, a kitchen we cooked some great meals in, and a video library that rivals Blockbuster. We spent our week snorkeling in the bay below the house, hiking, and finding hidden spots on the island. The best part of the trip was that we "got away from it all." The four of us work in high stress jobs, and to relax in such a serene part of St. John was amazing. We weren't ready to leave when we did, and we've decided to return back every few years. From two couples who have traveled to Mexico, Europe, Costa Rica, and beyond, St. John and Seahaven have spoiled all future trips because there's no way another place can feel as magical.

Seahaven

The home is beautiful, exactly as described, very clean. Interactions with owners went smoothly. The caretaker was helpful. The home is located just above a very private beach. We found two disadvantages of this property 1. It was very time consuming to travel anywhere from this property. Although the distances are not far in miles, driving on the very hilly roads goes slow and can be adventurous. (Although we reserved a 4 wheel drive auto; we ended up with Corolla and this may affect our driving experience). 2. The lovely beach at the property was too rough for snorkeling during our stay. This beautiful, isolated, property is best for adventure seekers.

About the host

Hosted by Bob Crowder

Host profile image
Bob and Barb and their two grown sons Bobby and Richie are avid swimmers, snorkelers and scuba divers. Having lived near the ocean most of their lives they decided to build their retirement home on a beach. After over 20 beach vacations throughout the Caribbean, Hawaii and both coasts of Mexico, they decided on St John due to its exceptional beaches, 'Park-like' environment (St John is mostly National Park), lack of crowds, privacy, and the security of being a United States Territory, etc., they made the easy decision to build on St John. Bob is a retired structural engineer/construction manager who worked for one of the nations largest commercial contractors for 35 years and in his spare time has built the family's homes each time they relocated around the country. So building their retirement home was a natural progression. We used local labor to clear the land and build the foundation and then with Bob as the crew chief, Barb as the crew cook, their two sons and five of their college buddies erected the post and beam home in a little over three weeks. Local labor came back at that point to finish the home out.

After receiving her masters degree in Physical Education, Barb taught physical education for over 30 years in several states including Rhode Island and California. She was also a USS swim coach and US Masters swim coach. Barb was an accomplished swimmer at UNC Chapel Hill and continued swimming as a masters swimmer, winning several national championships. Bob received his engineering degree from Duke where he also swam and he and Barb have swum masters together for over 40 years now. They recently teamed up for a 'mixed' relay with another couple and set a national record for the 55 to 59 age group.

Their oldest son, Bobby is a Doctor, as is his wife. Their youngest son, Richie, is an accomplished freelance photographer and director of photography , living with his speech pathologist wife in Ojai, CA

Why they chose this property

Bob had visited the Virgin Islands while on a training trip with the Duke swim team back in 1975 and swore to all his college buddies that he was going to build a home and retire in the Virgin Islands. Of course they didn't believe him. After over 20 beach vacations throughout the Caribbean, Hawaii and both coasts of Mexico, Barb and Bob decided on St John due to its exceptional beaches, 'Park-like' environment (St John is mostly National Park), lack of crowds, privacy, and the security of being a United States Territory, etc they made the easy decision to build on St John. Of course Bob makes it a habit of inviting his best swimming buddy from Duke to visit every year at Seahaven to rub it in that he decided at age 19 where he was going to retire!!!

What makes this property unique

Seahaven is situated directly on one of the best swimming and snorkeling beaches in the Islands with fantastic views of the crescent shaped tropical beach of Privateer Bay off the deck. In addition, some of the best beaches in world just minutes away by car. Most of the island is a National Park founded by the Vanderbilts in the late 50's making St John a unique tropical paradise.
