House in the woods

We really enjoyed this home. Most things were clean with a few dirty things in the kitchen. Loved how much they had to cook with and useful items, though the freezer was very full. We did not understand where to put food scrap so i just took my trash home. Bedrooms were great size and enough bed options, though a couple hopks in the shower would be useful. Great house for kids, friends and family. We enjoyed our stay.

Traditional Vermont Escape

Cozy log home in the woods, easy drive to Okemo and Killington for skiing. Kitchen had everything we needed to make casseroles and a birthday cake. Fireplace was lovely on the cold winter evenings. Snow was cleared each morning well before we headed out for skiing. Traditional VT butcher/market/cafe less than a mile away was an added bonus. Owner was very responsive to questions.

Great House for a Group

We enjoyed our stay at this property. The house was a perfect size for our group (2 families with teenage kids). We really enjoyed the living room space as well as the fireplace. The location was a bit further from Okemo than we expected but that was fine. The driveway for this property is very steep, luckily both families had 4x4 vehicles which was necessary to access this property in the winter. We did wake up one morning to an ice covered driveway which made leaving the house impossible. We contacted the owners who were very responsive, the driveway was treated with sand within 2 hours and we were able to go about our day. Unfortunately we did miss that day of skiing, but got to explore the area and made the best of the day. We are looking forward to visiting the area again and would stay at this property again.

Xmas2024

The house was spacious enough for all !!It was clean and well equipped !The fire place was awesome and we burned our own wood as we used the fireplace everyday! Nice big TV,s throughout the house and plenty of parking!! Not too far if you need to go to the store or venture down to Woodstock for some shopping!! Nice little Butchers Pantry just down the road!! My only complaint was that everyone didn’t care for the mattress toppers used on the beds., They were hard and uncomfortable .. But sometimes it is just what you are use to for a comfy nights sleep!! Perfect for Friends

The house is lovely and owner very responsive. Power had gone out the day before we arrived and owner responded quickly. House has many amenities but could use more glassware. Three bathrooms is great although master bathroom sink needs some repair to allow water to flow. No issues with showers. Had a great time and would return.

Beautiful, Secluded, Relaxing Family Getaway

This was an exceptional place for our 3-generation group of 6 adults + 2 teens to spend a few days together. Everyone had their own space, but the big common area and decks were perfect for gathering and meals. The house is super clean, well cared for, and tastefully decorated (nothing kitschy). We saw deer grazing in the backyard, and a hummingbird who visited several times. The big deck was perfect for watching paragliders at the top of Mt. Ascutney in the afternoons. It's obvious the owners are people who appreciate good food based on the kitchen utensils and appliances, including the MoccaMaster Technivorm coffee maker(!). We did outings to the Vermont Country store and Quechee Village. Unfortunately, we could only see the Gorge from the bridge due to recent flooding, but the Antique Mall and toy museum just up the street is a treasure trove of nostalgia, collectibles and local Vermont specialties. Two small suggestions... Might be worth getting some inexpensive wine glasses for guests, since it was strange to drink good wine from juice glasses. And also, although the listing mentions that "Extra-person charges may apply and vary depending on property policy" we were surprised that there was a $450 fee (6 "extra" people?) included for our stay. Maybe because it was a stay of only three nights? The total price is not unreasonable, just maybe make it clearer what determines the extra person charge. Overall, a beautiful place and a 5-star rental!

August GMHA

10 of us came in to South Woodstock for the August Horse Trials at GMHA. We ranged in ages from 11-64. The house was a perfect size for us as each family was able to have their own bedroom. The kitchen was a perfect size for us to cook dinner together after getting back from a long day at GMHA. The deck was the best place to relax before, during and after dinner as evening we watched wild turkeys congregate in the meadow below.

Beautiful place but not as expected

Overall the place was very nice and worked well for our family of 6. We had plenty of space and enjoyed the private location. A bit disappointed in the lack of scenic views as listed in the property description. I realize the timing of our trip had some impact on the views since it was mid summer, but the landscaping was overgrown. The mowing service came during our stay, which turned out fine since they came while we were out. I imagine in the winter the view is much better without the foliage. One issue for me was that the property states it has AC. Which it does, but involves window units and the one in the master bedroom kept tripping the breaker so we weren't able to use it. Along with the very uncomfortable bed, we had very restless nights and little sleep. The mattress and some other furniture needs replaced (one chair at dining table was broken and taped together). The place also had some bug challenges- large black ants inside (all areas not just kitchen) and spiders. We didn't use the smaller covered porches due to the ants. The home is beautiful and the layout exceptional for large families/groups. With just a little more care, the place would be exceptional.

Family getaway

We all had a wonderful time at this very beautiful and scenic escape home. The grandchildren all had a great time playing outside and building puzzles, knitting and playing board games. We had some icy days and the driveway was promptly sanded and we were able to get in and out with no problem. We all loved the dining nook off the kitchen. What a great addition. Thank you, Sheara!! We all would love to come again! Bedrooms have all ready been reassigned!!!! Suzie W

Spacious home, 30min drive to Okemo

Easy booking. Easy check in process. Large spacious home. Kitchen stocked with most of what we needed to cook with. Loved the walk in pantry. Loved the fireplace and views. The beds had a very firm foam overlay that was uncomfortable. Check out was somewhat frustrating and disorganized as I felt pressured to vacate at 10am from texts, phone call and email, even though the check out time in the agreement stated 11am.

Beautiful house in a private setting

This rental property is stunning and the pictures do not do it justice. We spent six nights and the house had everything we needed. Every convenience is provided; all we needed to bring was the food! Quintessential New England towns were nearby for shopping and exploring. Mountain biking and hiking trails abound. The owner was responsive and very easy to communicate with. We’d happily rent this home again!

Amazing place to stay! Beautiful layout, with windows looking out to gorgeous scenery. Spacious in every way - kitchen, living room, dining area, bathrooms, bedrooms - all clean, spacious, and modern. Any and all amenities you might want, from modern, spacious kitchen; brand new laundry machines; workout space; office space if needed; great bathrooms; roomy and comfy bedrooms. Secluded Getaway

We recently stayed at Mark’s home for a weekend in January with our two 20-something children. The driveway, while perilous for my daughter’s convertible VW bug (not a good Vermont car we realized), led through a winding woods and over a stream up the hill to the home. Getting the key and driving the cars into the attached garage was simple (the VW was given a rest and the 4-wheel drive stepped up). As we usually do, we all ran into the house and scattered through all the rooms calling out to each other what we saw. We were met with a very comfy and cozy home that really lacked nothing. It was too large for us four but that’s never a problem. This house is well-suited to a large family, the basement and loft provide the extra space you would need, the kitchen is huge and beautiful (soapstone counters I couldn’t stop touching!), with an enormous pantry and totally cute built in dining banquet. There also is a large laundry room that allowed our college students to catch up on some laundry. The yard is beautiful, I never saw a moose but did see tons of turkeys. We spent much of our time driving through the countryside, we’re not big skiers but we went horseback riding and hiking. This is a beautiful part of the country, and we would definitely come back to stay again.

About the host

Hosted by Mark Burkholz

Host profile image
Mark Burkholz is the Director of Technology at a private school in Massachusetts and Sheara Friend is a domestic relations lawyer in Massachusetts. We have 2 grown boys who work near Boston. We grew up in NYC and came to New England because we are outdoor enthusiasts. Each year we lead students kayaking to various countries in Central America. We love the Woodstock area because of its beauty and how much there is to do no matter what the season.

Why they chose this property

We bought this house because of our love of the outdoors and its incredible location. The house with its spectacular views and creature comforts is in one of the premier vacation locations in New England. The nearby restaurants are great and there is a lot to do in the area no matter what your preferences. Across the street is The Climb Fitness center which contains a large pool and welcomes guests. We love the proximity to Woodstock and the nearby ski areas such as Okemo and Killington. During the warmer months it offers everything you can want to do and during foliage season the beauty is not to be beat. We hope to retire to Vermont one day and we cannot think of a more beautiful and more interesting area then the Woodstock area.

What makes this property unique

We fell in love with our home because of the main room with its cathedral ceilings and its floor to ceiling glass wall with amazing views of Mount Ascutney. The kitchen with its cherry wood floors, soapstone counters and a fireplace makes it a pleasure to cook for the family. The 3 decks are unique especially the enclosed deck off of the master bedroom. We have never lived in a more comfortable house.
