About this property

Parksville Errington Hobos Pond Getaway-Pet friendly Barbecue Laundry AC Parking

Hobos Pond Get Away, a pet friendly place with barbecue, laundry and good parking .

Please come and enjoy this quiet, serene place to enjoy a touch of west coast wildness. Check out our reasonable rates for guests who desire a longer stay.

Our well appointed cottage is located on a five acre property that fronts onto the beautiful Englishman River. Situated on a bluff above the river our large deck offers our guests a view of the river. From this high deck our guests view the river through a forest of lush ferns and evergreens.

A rugged hiking trail from the cottage takes guests to the beautiful Englishman River. Follow the trail through a Nature Trust Park where you can enjoy beautiful vistas, small water falls and clean clear pools to swim. The Nature Trust Park hike will come out at Top Bridge Regional park with it a beautiful suspension bridge. This park can be accessed from Parksville as well. There is a parking lot if you arrive by car.

Our hobo guests can enter the Nature Trust Park from the end of our Englishman River Road. That entrance is about 1000 feet from our property entrance. There are a few picnic sites along the way. Make it a short trip or a long hike along this amazing river.

Parksville is mid island on Vancouver Island. From the picturesque seaside town of Parksville it takes about 20 minutes to arrive at Hobos Pond. It is a scenic drive through farms and fields to arrive at Hobos Pond Get Away. The Hobo cottage shares our five acres with a our main house. There is enough distance between dwellings to ensure privacy.

Guests can visit Parksville and Qualicum Beach where art galleries, quaint shops and restaurants abound.

The weather here in this area is mild and sometimes quite hot during the summer and fall seasons. Spring and fall can be a bit rainy.

Quick drives get guests to many delightful places on the mid island. Visit French Creek Marina. Guests can see the large fishing vessels who still ply the waters off our island. The French Creek Pub is a good place for Fish and Chips. At the end of the pier you can buy fresh seafood. A quick trip to Goats on the Roof Market in Coombs is vibrant with tourists from all over the world. Here you can enjoy restaurants, big ice cream cones and a market with fresh fruit, vegetables and gifts. Real goats live on the roof top of the Market.

Saturday morning visit the Errington Market, a local farmers market that offers fresh flowers, locally grown veggies as well as locally handcrafted gifts. This market is about an 8 minute drive from our cottage. Also nearby is the Unicorn farm market that offers delicious local meat and sausages.

During the summer months enjoy live music and concerts by the sea in the park in Parksville.

Explore Nanoose. At the Petro Can gas station on the island highway take a drive through Fairwinds and Nanoose. Beautiful homes dot the rugged old coastal highway. A marina and an upscale restaurant are open most days during the summer season. This marina is a safe harbour for leisure craft. Visit Moorecroft Park in this area. It is a stunningly beautiful ocean side park.

For guests who don't hike or swim and just want to relax at our cottage enjoy our large very private deck. It is a good place to hang out. This is a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind from the bustle of city life. It is private enough for yoga, star gazing during warm weather or put up an easel and paint a picture. You can barbecue that fish you bought at French Creek!

Day trips include favourite destinations such as a drive to Tofino on the West Coast or explore Horne Lake Caves. Day trips to seaside towns of Comox and Campbell River along the old highway are worth taking the time to visit. And you might have time to go to Quadra Island. This is a ten a ten minute ferry trip leaving from the quay in Campbell River. On Quadra Island have a beer and or lunch at the very old pub in Heriot Bay.

Or take day trips to some of the outer islands like Denman or Hornby Island. Beware of the ferry schedule. Make sure you are aware of when the last ferries leave the island. It is important to schedule your departure from Hornby to get back to Denman to make the last ferry to Vancouver Island.

A five minute car trip from our cottage takes guests to the beautiful Englishman River Falls Provincial Park with its glorious waterfall and easy hiking trails. This is a five minute drive from the cottage. There are some deep pools for swimmers and shallow water for children.

Hobos Pond cottage can host four and/or six guests comfortably. Ask the hosts if you wish to add additional guests.

The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with a washer and dryer. The living room has two leather loungers, a chesterfield and a TV where guests can watch NetFlix or Roku movies. The cottage has 3 queen size beds. The cottage is equipped with cable and high speed internet suitable for guests who want to work while relaxing at Hobos Pond. The cottage is an open concept but provides privacy for all our guests.

This comfortable and charming cottage shares the property with our main house but is situated far enough away to provide guests with privacy.

A very sturdy oak staircase leads to the sleeping loft. The main floor has a full bathroom with a shower and a jet bathtub and the loft has a toilet and sink so the upstairs guests don't need to take the staircase to use the bathroom during the night.

Everyone is welcome from all over the world. We invite people to come and explore this magical island. Hike, swim, do yoga, forest bathe or star gaze. Make this a romantic get away, a family reunion or a girl's get away. Make this a short visit or ask us about our long term stay.

This property has some dangers like a large pond and a big drop off to the river in one area which makes this property unsuitable for small children. So we only welcome guests over the age of 12 who can enjoy the property unsupervised.

Come and enjoy this beautiful place with us. Welcome!
Marlene and Harvey

Amazing stay at Hobos Pond

Me, my spouse, and our dogs stayed at Hobos Pond and I can’t say enough great things about Marlene and Harvey, the cabin, the area, and our stay. Marlene and Harvey are so kind and lovely. While their home is on the property, they allowed our stay to be so private. They have five acres of land which meant tons of room for the dogs to play and the cabin was a short walk to Englishman’s River Park. The cabin was so clean when we got there, and was such a comfortable place for us to be. We enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely stay there again!! Thank yo, Marlene and Harvey!! It was so great meeting you and for being able to stay at Hobos Pond!! Sharon, Steve, Bandit, Daisy, Ian, Leo, and Sasha

Hobo's Pond

Hobo's Pond is a beautiful, serene location, surrounded by nature and a perfect place for us to get away from the city. The cabin is well appointed and has almost everything one would need. Marlene and Harvey were responsive and communicated promptly with us, and available if we had any questions.

Wonderful, Peaceful Spot

We had a wonderful time at Hobo's Pond. Harvey and Marlene were lovely, and we had a nice chat with them upon arriving. The area is remote but easily accessible, and the property is lovely and full of life. The cabin itself was exactly what we were looking for: small and cozy, but with all the amenities.

Wonderful property!

Hobos Pond is the loveliest property, if you want majestic scenery, tranquility, wildlife, and hosts that go above and beyond, this is the place. Harvey and Marlene are the most wonderful people! They respect your privacy but are always available to chat, laugh, or to make your stay memorable. The cabin is well stocked and attention to everything one might need. Close to Parksville for groceries and restaurants. How grateful I feel to have found a little slice of nirvana! Thank you Harvey and Marlene!

Tranquil paradise

The property is magnificent- quiet, and very private. The river, a short walk away is equally magical and clean. The beach is just a 20 minute drive. The farmer’s market on Saturdays is just down the road. The house is very comfortable and spacious. Great bbq and space to entertain in. The owners/ hosts are such nice people and nearby to help with anything if necessary. We love staying here with our extended family and look forward to each return visit.

Magical Cottage Oasis

Another fabulous stay at Hobos Pond. We never wanted to leave. This is such a beautiful spot. Large acreage owned by the most lovely couple. Always total privacy to make you feel at home. Lots of birds, bunnies and others visit this country oasis. The deck overlooks Englishman River with the falls close by with abundant trails. The cottage has everything you need. The kitchen is fully equipped for the cook. About a 12 minute drive to shopping and highway connection for all beautiful Vancouver Island has to offer. Large old growth trees, beautiful blooming plants, fragrant roses and herbs, the list could go on. We will always want to return to this spot even after renting several other places over the years on the island. Thanks to Marlene and Harvey for another remarkable stay. Don’t hesitant a second to book!

Off the beaten path...by just enough

What a wonderful place to stay! Very quiet, lots of room, and next to a gin-clear river. What more could you want. Parksville is a close drive with lots to see and do. Some great local attractions such as the wildlife recovery centre in Errington. The hosts are salt of the earth kind of people. Very welcoming. We are missing our stay already and will be back.

A Hidden Gem

We have renamed Hobo's Pond "Neverland". It is the most magical place. The property has so much to enjoy. Not too much to add to the other five star reviews except we never want to leave. We are packing up to depart in a few days with a heavy heart. The peace and tranquility of this place has been so healing after a very long stretch of challenges for our family. The location is close enough to amenities yet you feel far from reality, in a very good way. The birds, the river music and bunnies are all so lovely. Especially like the fact that you can venture down the hill to a magical winding path to the Englishman River with its pure and clear water. We swam in the pools many times. The very private deck overlooking gigantic ferns and gorgeous trees was truly breathtaking. The accommodation lacks for nothing, including air conditioning when needed. Marlene and Harvey are a treat and the most gracious people. They have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and easy. We thank them so very much for all their efforts and the privacy we had while we relaxed and enjoyed their amazingly beautiful property. We cannot wait to return. P.S. Genie thanks them too for putting up with the fact that she felt everywhere was her property and her frequent visits to say hello :) Do not hesitate a second to book this fabulous hidden gem!

A real reTREAT

It's hard to describe how much we've loved our stay here at Hobo's Pond. The property is absolutely stunning and the cabin is very comfortable and well appointed with everything you would need for both short and long stays. Paired with Marlene and Harvey's warm and welcoming approach we've really been able to relax, forget our troubles and feel very much at home during our extended stay... in fact so much show we've extended for even longer! We've also been working from home throughout our stay and the 1GIG internet has been put through the ringer with no issues. Though some might find the location a little "off the beaten path" we've loved the solitude and all the shopping and other amenities you would need are really only a short drive away so we haven't found being the extra few miles out of town to be an issue at all. What we have loved the most is how well located we are to explore so much of the island. So many amazing day trip opportunities to explore in all directions and even straight from the backyard if you're a trail runner like me. In a nutshell would highly recommend a stay at Hobo's Pond - short or long - and we will look back very fondly at our time here. Thanks Marlene and Harvey!

About the host

Host profile image
We are retired seniors. We purchased this property in 1989 and built the cottage in 1993. Initially, we lived in Burnaby and came to Vancouver Island for holidays and long weekends. We retired to our cottage in 2001. We love Vancouver Island and lived in our cozy little cottage until it felt too small. So we decided to build the main house. We moved into our larger home in 2015. We love living away in such a quiet coastal setting away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Although we are in a quiet rural setting we can get to town within a quick car trip. So we don't feel isolated. After moving into our new house, we realized that our cottage was now available to host guests who also wanted to get away to somewhere quiet. The property is named after a pond that Harvey enjoyed as a child.
We invite you enjoy a vacation at Hobo's Pond. We will do everything we can to help you enjoy this beautiful place.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this property because we love nature and we love being beside a river. Harvey has been fishing rivers since he was a child. He enjoys sharing his river fishing experiences with other fly fishermen.

This property has some special features. From our doorstep you can hike all the way to Top Bridge. Regional Park. You can actually hike all the way to Parksville if you are a serious hiker. Top Bridge is a fabulous place with a suspension bridge and pot holes that are a favourite swimming spot for locals and visitors. You can also get to Top Bridge via the main island highway.

The entire hike along the Englishman River is very picturesque. Part of the hike takes you through a Natures Trust Park. There are picnic sites in several locations in this park. For guests who only want to take only a short forest walk we recommend starting the trail at the end of the Englishman River Road (only a few feet from our driveway) and turn left at the junction and follow the trail until you come to the Morrison Creek. This is a short walk but it is picturesque and does not require anything other than running shoes and a hat. Or a walking stick if you have one. You can continue from there but we recommend just trying the short walk first. It is also wise to carry water on any hikes.

What makes this property unique

The hobo cottage is very comfortable; it has a lovely large deck on the river side where you can look down into the Englishman River. The deck has a table and umbrella and a barbecue for guests who like to grill their food. Loungers are for guests who just want to read a book or soak up the forest scenery.

On the property and surrounding area are many native plants indigenous to this area: huckleberries, salmon berries, rose hips, salal, oregon grape, ferns, cedar - fir and hemlock evergreen trees, skunk cabbage, willows and many more. Native ducks make hobos pond their home. In the spring it is delightful to see the mother mallards with their babies and the wood ducks with their wee little ducks.

Even though this property is out of town and in the country it offers the traveler the ability to make quick trips to get food and gas. We are about a twenty minute drive from most modern shopping and amenities. We are 10 minutes from the General Store at Grafton and Englishman River Road where you can buy convenience items, gas and wine and beer. If you order a pizza from Panago Pizza in town they will deliver it to the Errington Store where you can pick it up from the delivery guy.

The cottage has comfortable beds and furniture and the TV has some local stations and Net Flix and Roku. Many of our guest work from the cottage. We have hi-speed internet for those people who combine a get away with work.

We are happy to answer guests questions and are happy to help guests have a great time here. We welcome all our guests to come and enjoy this tranquil place with us. Safe travels Marlene and Harvey
