About this property

Garden house from the 15th century near the Ponte Vecchio

Just steps away from the Ponte Vecchio, on the “Oltrarno” side of the historic center of Florence, this lovely and elegant home provides all of the comforts of the modern world combined with the rich history of the 15th Century.

This home used to be the 'Forni Reali' or royal bakery serving the Medici and later the Italian royal family when they occupied the Palazzo Pitti. It comprises 130 square meters (approx. 1,399 sq. ft), and has 3 bedrooms, each with private bathroom, a large living room and fully-equipped modern kitchen, small study and additional half bath. The apartment sleeps 6-8 people, and wraps around a lovely courtyard garden adorned with flowers, fountain and goldfish. Decorated both for comfort and charm, the home contains an eclectic mix of antiques and modern furniture.

The apartment has its own separate entrance on the ground floor, only one step up from the street, and is equipped with all necessary amenities, including central heat and air conditioning, satellite t.v. and DVD/VCR player, Internet connection, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, and washing machine. One of the owners is an artist who splits his time between Florence and New York City, and many of his original artworks are exhibited in the home, including large oil paintings in the living room, and frescoes in the bedroom.

The apartment is located on a pedestrian-only street just off a charming piazza. There you will find a famous restaurant and delightful cafe. Just 3-4 minutes away you will find the Ponte Vecchio, and you can walk to the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria in 5-10 minutes. A parking garage is located 1 minute away, and local bus stops servicing all parts of the city are also just minutes away.

Great location and quiet

This place is has a gelato store, make your sandwich window, great restaurant and a bar…. All right outside your door….. and it’s quiet insideBed were comfy! Pillows have options(firm/soft)1 bath per bedroom is great. Also 1/2 bath off kitchen. 2 of the bedrooms have double beds1 had a queen and a twin and a bathtub/ shower combo1 bedroom you walk thru master OR walk across the patio to the main house… like the 3rd bedroom. I stayed in 3rd space and loved itAll showers had pressure and got hot fastThe place is older but had everything you needed. Furniture was comfy. It was clean. Gianna was fast to communicate and help. Such a nice person. Smart tv, can hook up to Netflix, YouTube…If it had been sunny, the courtyard would of been greatSo many doors open up to it. You’d get a great breeze thru the house. Neighbors were quiet too. Their windows are above the courtyard. I’d totally stay here again!!

Fab location. Easy access to everything. Genda was amazing and couldn’t help enough. More rustic though than photos on site but overall really good and whole party of 6 really enjoyed it.Judy from Australia

Awesome first floor apartment near Pitti Palace and Ponte Vecchio, with Trattoria, Gelataria, Caffe all within feet of the front door. Very clean, and host was friendly and provided good advice. Highly recommend!

Great Location, helpful manager

The location, promptness and helpfulness of Gentiana and the owner were a perfect 10! The downfall was the musty smell and how you have to walk through one bedroom to get to the other bedroom. It also looked like there's mold on the wall in the back bedroom. There is one King bed and a single bed in what I would call the master bedroom. The other two bedrooms have double beds, so it's a little crowded if two adults plan to sleep in them. The gelato next door was amazing, how they helped us set up a driver for the airport and Chianti area was wonderful!

Charming 15th-Century Apartment in Florence’s Oltrarno – Historic, Quirky, and Immaculately Clean

Our stay in this unique 15th-century garden-level apartment in Florence’s Oltrarno neighborhood was a memorable experience. The space is full of character, with an artistic and slightly quirky charm that reflects its historic roots. While the furnishings are quite old, everything was impeccably clean, which we truly appreciated. The layout was perfect for our group (four adults), as each of the three bedrooms had its own private bath—an absolute luxury. The only area for improvement would be the bathrooms. The water pressure was low, and it was sometimes difficult to get warm water for showers. While we understand the challenges of maintaining old plumbing, small updates—such as replacing the showerheads and adding a door or curtain to the main bath—would make a big difference. That said, staying in Oltrarno offered a more local, authentic feel while still being within walking distance of Florence’s main sights. If you love history and don’t mind a bit of old-world eccentricity, this is a fantastic choice!

Great stay at this property.

This was a very interesting property with quite a history. We enjoyed our stay and the property mgr was very accommodating the last day as we had to leave our luggage at the property past the check-out time. Would recommend !!

Amazing Location and Stay

Stayed here during with our family and could not have been happier. Location was amazing and the kitchen was well stocked with everything you could need. We went several times to markets and cooked amazing meals at the apartment. We will stay here again when we come back to Florence.

We’d stay here again

We were 4 adults over the age of 65 and stayed a week in December. Having an apartment on the ground floor was nice. The neighborhood was lovely, quiet and convenient. The gelato shop a few doors down was 5 ⭐️! The apartment was spacious, the kitchen was well equipped and updated but overall, I’d describe the apartment as tired. It must be noted that the third bedroom is unattached from the rest of the apartment and across the courtyard. It would be rather cramped for two people. With the other 2 bedrooms, you must pass through one to get to the other, unless you exit through the courtyard. Having 3 1/2 baths was great although the shower-head in the hall bathroom was wonky. The heat was intermittent and being December, we found it a bit chilly. Communication with the host was good, check in was with a lock box, we never saw anyone when arriving or parting, which is not my preference. But response time to question was prompt and friendly. I have stayed in 10 different apartments throughout Florence, some modern in decor and updates, others, with a more original feel. There are always pluses and minuses with any apartment. This apartment has an old world feel, accommodated us well, and we enjoyed ourselves. All that being said, we would stay here again.

Three Generations

The property is in an extraordinarily convenient and charming area. I think it is best characterized as “rustic.” Due to its location, charm, and amenable and helpful host I rate the property as excellent. However, it is important to note that the configuration of the bedrooms and the size of the beds does not realistically sleep seven people as listed on the website. Our group consisted of my wife and I, my daughter and son-in-law, their 13 month old son, and my 35 year old son. The master bedroom is quite large and comfortable with a queen size bed, and plenty room for a crib or single cot that is provided with property. Not easily discerned by the listing is that the other two bedrooms have double beds that are not comfortable for two people to sleep in long-term. Our visit was for 16 days so we utilized the cot in our sleeping arrangements. Also useful to know upfront is that the master bedroom is the only bedroom with direct access to the living room and kitchen. One of the other bedrooms requires walking through the master or walking outside through the court. to access the kitchen and living room. The third bedroom is detached and requires walking across the courtyard in every circumstance. Again, not an overriding factor for what is a terrific property, but something worth knowing so that guests can pack slippers for the frequent walk across the courtyard. Realistically the property is ideal for a couple and two children or single adults.

Beautiful Place, Met Our Needs

This apartment was lovely, has multiple rooms, each with its own bathroom, which was very nice. There is a lovely gelato shop at the corner about 12 steps away. There is a lot of street noise as the alley just outside is very busy, but we could not hear the noise from the bedrooms - only the living room.

Florence exploration

The Garden House is in the optimal location, short walking distance to Ponte Vecchio, museums, the Duomo, Boboli Gardens and next door to the best gelato in Florence. We were three couples and very much appreciated having ensuite bathrooms for each of the three bedrooms. The rest of the living, dining, cooking area met all our needs. Walking no more than 4 blocks to a grocery and having many excellent restaurants within that range was appreciated. With the property manager being a certified guide, we were able to arrange tours and rides well in advance of our arrival. All of our needs were satisfied.

Cozy well-located gem

My family and I really enjoyed our stay at this property in October. We loved that all the rooms also had doors to access the courtyard. The location was perfect for walking to all the activities we had planned. And on the day of our departure, the host arranged our taxi to the airport for us which was very helpful.

Best Corner in all of Florence

The apartment was absolutely perfect. It was clean and spacious. The host was very responsive. The best part was the location. It was close to all the major sights, but there’s no reason to leave the block of the apartment. Right across the street is a fantastic coffee shop that is very reasonable priced. Next door is a nice laid back bar. You can hear a soft murmur of people in the living room, but the bedrooms are quiet. Next door to the bar is a great gelateria. Across the street is from that is a delicious sandwich shop. There are also two great trattorias on that corner. All these places seem more authentic than other places you'll find along the busier streets. If you have a car, Google Maps says you can drive to the apartment, but I don't recommend it. Parking is expensive in town, but you can park and take a train from Villa Costanza for only 7 Euros/day.

History and convenience

We loved the history of this place being a bakery for the Medici’s and expected a modified apartment due to the historic nature. The location was excellent ! The restaurant right outside your doorstep is excellent (get the pear pasta and gnudi). Literally right near Boboli gardens. Easy walk to downtown area and much less tourists. We loved having 3 bedrooms, beds were comfortable. The coffee maker didn’t work while we were there and informed host. It’s needs a little attention/investment to the place just give a welcoming packet like other places with WiFi and instructions. The kitchen otherwise was great. The dining room table was great. The living room furniture needs some renovation. Appreciate the history but not very comfortable. The apartment is right outside of a bar which was not noted in other reviews but bedrooms are in the back so fine for sleeping but made living room noisy. Overall, 4 stars due to value, convenience and history.

Perfect Location

Overall, this rental was really good pick. Although it could definately use a little TLC, the location and the size of the rental is perfect for parties of 3 or more. I can't say enough about the fantastic neighborhood itself. Very welcoming and full of restaurants and teeny-little businesses of all sorts. Easy walking distance of less then1/2 mile to all the artsy hotspots. What more could you ask for in the beautiful city of Florence?
