About this property

Skiers View: 8 mins to Timberline & Davis + big view/hot tub/deck/grill etc

Nestled in the heart of Canaan Valley, this charming 4-bedroom cabin-chalet offers a unique and tranquil escape for your next vacation. Skier's View greets you with artisinal rustic charm, offset with modern conveniences. The two-sofa living room offers the possibility of a crackling fire in a glass-front wood stove/fireplace, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure and-or turn on the large screen smart T.V. for game day or favorite movie.

Gather your loved ones and enjoy the bubbling hot tub or chiminea-outdoor smores station, both immediately outside the doorstep. Stay connected with the free WiFi, and send the kids or kids-at-heart in your group downstairs for foosball or another gaming or movie night smart TV w/ satellite/cable channels.

Well equipped kitchen means you can make just about anything at your home away from home. We also are usually well-stocked with starter drinks, coffee pods, spices, candies, and firewood.

Explore the nearby Timberline Resort just 7 minutes away, or Canaan Valley Resort State Park, just an 11-minute drive, or venture to the stunning Blackwater Falls State Park, a 16-minute drive from your haven. For a true wilderness experience, the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area is only an 8-minute drive away (if you know the secret way to get there, which I can share,) Also, feel free to book a spa treatment at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, or use their indoor pool/spa area for a very nominal fee, or their outdoor pool in summer for a similarly low fee. Ice skating and tubing in the winter at Canaan and sledding at Blackwater Falls State Park.

Back at the cabin-chalet, you'll find a fully stocked kitchen, complete with a stove, oven, large refrigerator, and all the necessary appliances to whip up delicious meals. Enjoy your culinary creations at the dining table(s), or step outside and fire up the grill for an al fresco dining experience on the large picnic table and Adirondack chairs.

Unwind in the comfort of your home away from home, where you'll find essentials like towels, basic soaps, shampoo, hair dryer and hair curler. With a washing machine and dryer, you can keep your clothes fresh throughout your stay. Embrace the great outdoors with the porch, chiminea-fire pit, and outdoor play area, or challenge your family to a game of foosball in the game room.

Canaan Valley/Timberline/Davis/Thomas area has so much more to offer, which I am happy to share with a specially prepared guest sheet for all who book Skiers View.

Weekend Ski Trip

Private location, nice view out the back deck and porch. Beds were comfortable, linens were clean, plenty of towels. Served the purpose for us after reservations elsewhere were cancelled last minute due to a water issue. Some things are a bit dated and in need of repair, but overall good and homey. Very convenient to Timberline. Maybe goes without saying in the area, but if going during the winter with the snow, make sure you have a 4x4 to get up the road and driveway.

great location and views

The house cleaners arrived 15 minutes before our check-in time, so we watched them clean for 2 hours! They were apologetic and were really thorough, but it was unfortunate that the house was not ready for us. The address is incorrect as listed - so please put in 186 - not 6 as the home address. The baseboard in the downstairs bedroom with bunk beds does not work at all. Also more info about the wood stove would be helpful - like how do we know if the flue is open (is there a place to open the damper, etc). As others have said, the cover for the hot tub is broken and it is difficult to remove and put back, especially with the snow and ice cover we encountered. Despite all this, the home is comfortable and in a great location for winter activities at White Grass or Canaan. We would definitely rent this home again.

A darling stay at The Skiers View

Our overall impression of mountainous beauty cannot be understated. The amenities and charm of the small town of Davis harkens back to a forgotten time of simplicity and neighborly care. The nearbyhorseback trails and petting zoo provided a commune with the natural world that we craved in this colorful time of year and the close hiking trails and waterfalls are worth every step of the way. We had a wonderful time and are grateful for our host, whose email on local attractions and food helped to shape our 5 day trip. This chalet is a Cant Miss.

Upon arrival(at check-in time), the property had not been cleaned, dirty sheets, towels, hot tub. We reached out to the cleaning person and she called back quickly. She came to the house within the hour and we were able to get into the house approximately 2 hours after check-in time. It was frustrating, but we appreciated the quick response. I'd recommend bringing wash cloths, as there were 4 provided for 7 of us staying for 3 nights. Plenty of towels provided. Two rolls of paper towels in the kitchen and 2 rolls of toilet paper for each bath. The house is older, but cute. Bedrooms are small, living room and kitchen had ample space for our party of 4 adults and 3 children. Kids enjoyed the foosball table. View from the rear deck is beautiful! The location is convenient to Black Water Falls State Park, Davis, and Thomas.

Great cabin, fanatic views

This is a really great cabin, with lots of room. My daughter loved the tree themed room, this is a great place for kids and maybe 2-3 couples. Definitely one of the better cabins we've stayed at in the area. The view is really the best part, which I'm sure is gorgeous in the summer and winter. Hot tub was nice, and there was plenty of fire wood. They definitely have all the essentials except for shampoo/conditioner (you can easily buy some in town if you're like me and forgot). I really appreciate the abundance of towels. If you like very firm box spring mattresses, and I know some people do, you'll be fine but my spine does not unfortunately.

Wonderful Stay at Skiers View

We had a wonderful stay at Skiers View. The home worked perfectly for our group of 5 ranging from 20 to 79. Plus our lab! Plenty of space, clean, good beds, stocked kitchen. The downstairs offered privacy and fun for college age adults who had online classes still. Access to parking and in/out of house was great for the 79 year old, even though it was unseasonably warm and no ice/snow on roads or steps, this was a worry for me. We had an emergency trip to hospital and were very pleased with care we received in Keyser. Location is perfect for skiing, the falls, nature watching in the field. Thanks Colleen!

Nice place

The cabin was nice. The hot tub cover was broken so it didn’t really maintain the temps it needed to after skiing all day. The kitchen and sitting area are huge. Showers need to be quick because the hot water doesn’t last long for 4 people so plan accordingly. Would come back again for sure. Communication with owner was top notch.

Wonderful

We made this reservation on a whim. Booked it and checked in the same day. Read all the reviews and reached out to the host to see if the 2 complaints were resolved. One was the hot tub didn’t work and the host couldn’t get it fixed right away. So, first off the Hot tub did work beautifully. But I just wonder if the person making that complaint has ever tried to get any work done on the very day you call. That was a bit of an unrealistic idea. The other complaint was the WiFi didn’t work. Mind you, you are in the mountains but that being said the WiFi work perfectly, never went out and it snowed everyday we were there with 60 mile an hour gusts. There was plenty of fire wood to stay toasty warm, wonderful linens on the bed we slept in. Place is close to both ski resorts and you can see them both from the deck. Also, the drive was plowed everyday and the porch was even shoveled. Host was very responsive and even checked in to make sure we were all settled in. We would definitely go back.

The views are what make this property so very amazing! The kitchen/living room area is large and spacious. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking. Colleen was very responsive when any issue came up. We loved the fact that the road leading up to the house was not overly steep and there was ample parking. We would definitely come again!

Extended weekend hiking trip

This house was a gem. Price point was excellent for what was offered. The house was equipt with everything we needed. We were not bothered with having to bring our own towels and linens. The towels and linens were very nice. The view was amazing and the host was very thorough and informative and responded to all our needs. 10/10 recommend if you are wanting to visit this area.

Short weekend

We received the access code during our drive on check-in day, which there was no internet access to check our emails. When we arrived, we noticed the cleaning crew dumped dirt in the main bathroom tub. The floor dirt was un-vacuumed. Also, the master bedroom bedsheet had stain and left unwashed, so my husband and I washed before use. Granted that this is a pet-friendly place, but pet urine was all over the sofa pillows. I could only give it a high score on the communication with the owner because they responded quickly when we reached out a couple times. Otherwise, this property should not be a Premier rental. Sorry. My husband and I checked out a day early.

Relaxing stay

We had a really nice stay along with our dog. It was nice to be close to natural areas to explore like Blackwater Falls SP, Dolly Sods/Bear Rocks, and Seneca Rocks. It was rainy and dreary due to the tropical storm and set the scene for a wonderful lazy long weekend for relaxing in the hot tub, napping, and making good food. It is not easy to find a location like this that is dog friendly. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Wild and wonderful

Took our large family (2 adults 5 kids) to stay and it was perfect. The cabin is nice and has cozy vibes. Big enough so everyone has their own space, but small enough where you feel as if everyone is close and together even if in the basement. Hot tub was so great to sit and relax to view the stars off of the mountain side. Would definitely recommend the ice cream shop that’s in town. (The Oreo flavor was my favorite.) Rode horses and took a visit into Cass for locomotive train ride. My children loved it, my husband was able to enjoy scenery, our teen found canoeing to be a new hobby at Blackwater Falls park, and I (mom) got to release much needed tension in the hot tub while knowing my entire family was happy. Over all would rate the entire stay a 10/10 and would definitely visit again. Views: 10/10

Great Location

We really enjoyed our stay at this rental. Nice view from the deck, open kitchen/ living area and nice appliances. This was the prefect spot for taking time to visit Davis, Canaan resort and Blackwater Falls. At Canaan resort we rode the ski lift up then hiked to Bald Knob. We also enjoyed hiking at Blackwater State park. Our adult children enjoyed an afternoon tubing down the Cheat River. Next time, we will stay longer and visit Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley Wildlife refuge. This rental is in a great centralized location and the property manager, Colleen, was very nice and responsive whenever I reached out to her regarding check in, etc.

Absolutely terrible communication and lots of maintenance needed within the home.

Day 1 the hot tub completely drained due to a leak. Contacted the property manager at 9am and received a response that someone would be out. Reached out again at noon that day and got no response. Heard nothing for the rest of our stay. This is inexcusable. The reason for renting the unit was the hot tub. Majorly disappointed with spending so much money and this happening. The sliding glass doors going out onto the deck were so difficult to open and close that it took my 16 year old son to open and close them. I have yet to get a response from the property manager and I'm back home now. I would advise you NOT to rent this place.

About the host

Host profile image
Mom, dog lover, outdoors lover and very grateful person who knows the "old fashion" value of the golden rule. Ski/race team mom/gymnastics mom. Drowning in gear mom.

Why they chose this property

I first discovered Canaan Valley when I went X-country skiing here as a very young adult in 1989. At the time, the only other place I had X-country skied was in a thick European forest out of a Brother Grimm's fairy tale - Perlacher Forest, around Munich, Germany. I was excited to find that Blackwater Falls State Park, when covered in snow, evoked the same feeling. I was also excited to discover that Canaan Valley has the most natural snow fall of anywhere that is a weekend trip from from the Washington DC-Baltimore area. I went back every winter after that and dreamed of someday having my own place "in the Valley." Fast forward to 2005 when the dream became a reality. Upon purchase, Skier's View was in not great condition, but a thoughtful renovation, redecoration and removal of heavy window treatments did wonders! Fast forward and my son who has spent precious time here appreciates the great outdoors and is on ski team in winter. (Or race team, to be more accurate.) Happy to share the beauty, joy and tranquility of this piece of "almost heaven" with our guests and thrilled with all the improvements that have occurred in the area over the last 20-ish years, including the new Timberline Mountain. While we are not "on the mountain" we enjoy seeing the runs of both Timberline and Canaan across from us, and also enjoy that it is a much quicker run into Davis or Thomas from our location.

What makes this property unique

Fabulous views, central location to Valley fun. This home is not decorated like a rental -- while "rustic" it has a lot of high-end features you will not typically find in a rental home, like quality made custom furnishings, pendleton blankets, heiloom/antique finishes, etc. I get my best sleep in this home, thanks to the dark night sky, peace and quiet, and fresh, cool mountain air. Plus, the outdoor activities probably help! In addition to the great outdoor experiences in the area, note that the towns of Davis and Thomas have a lot to offer for towns of their size, in the way of visual arts, music, food, drink and seasonal events. (The fourth of July fireworks and parade are really really special.) There are a number of artists studios, as well as the acclaimed Purple Fiddle café/music venue in Thomas, part of the "mountain music trail." Over the years, this little piece of West Virginia has been growing and thriving in a very positive way -- more local shops, many sellers of local beef, honey, spirits, etc.; quaint Tip Top café in Thomas with Friday grass-fed beef burger night, and a very special "locals" bar at the Billy Motel. And thanks to Perfect North for putting $10 million into Timberline Mountain!! Proud to be a teeny tiny part of the invigoration of this beautiful part of West Virginia.
