Beautiful Hawi retreat!

We loved our two week stay! Definitely returning. The home was clean, well equipped, peaceful and spacious. From the lanai there are no other homes in sight, and only the sounds of nature. The animals on the property are welcoming, and well behaved companions. You wake to the sounds of bird calls and at night the stars are amazing. Would absolutely recommend!

Peaceful retreat with a beautiful view

We had a fantastic three week stay. It was just what we expected from the description and photos. Since we stayed for three weeks so we felt we really got a feel for the property and area. The hosts were friendly, helpful, and super responsive... and also great people. Make sure to enquire about cheffing services from the daughter of the host that lives on site. She prepared our family multiple meals and it was a delicious and experience. Also, arrange a farm tour if you are interested as Richard was extremely knowledgeable about all the aspects of the farm he's created on the property.

Great time in Hawi!!

We knew we were going to have a good time when our host and her daughter met us at the gate on their horses:) This was a family vacation including Mom, Dad, Daughter and Husband and Son. This house is located on a working organic farm just outside of Hawi on the north side of the island. Our host and her family live on and work the farm. It was very nice having them onsite for questions and they were not at all intrusive. The house has an excellent westerly view of the ocean and Maui in the distance. The five of us were very comfortable in the house. The kitchen was well equipped...we found all the utensils we needed. There is one full bathroom inside, one full bathroom outside. The master bath has the toilet, sinks and tub inside and the shower is outside. The house also came equipped with a visiting dog and two cats which we enjoyed (Kahu likes to play fetch). There are fresh eggs and vegetables available for purchase from the garage. The porch is large and well equipped with couches, chairs and a hammock and faces the gardens out back as well as the ocean. The house does not have a TV...and we didn't miss it. The town of Hawi is about a 10 minute walk down the road. It's a small town but has the essentials...coffee shop, ice cream shop, restaurants and grocery stores. We walked into town several times. Being located on the northern part of the island, getting to the beachs and hiking destinations does take some driving but we did not find it onerous...just takes some planning. If you're traveling from the east, you'll be up early anyway:) If you're looking for a house surrounded by nature and quiet that's a little bit separated from the tourist rush, you will like this place. We did!! The Calhouns and Trottas

Wonderful Escape to Paradise

We had a wonderful time at Hawi at this lovely organic farm. The home is beautiful and spacious. The outside shower was lovely and relaxing. Hammock was relaxing and the views of the ocean and Maui were breathtaking. Truly a gem. We had an issue on the first night but the owner compensated for the problem accordingly. The farm fruits and veggies were delicious and I especially loved the dragon fruit. It was nice to get to know Lila and her sweet kids. My kids enjoyed the farm tour and we loved learning about how to farm in Hawaii. Walking to the coffee shop in downtown Hawi in the morning was relaxing and enjoyable. This home was conveniently close to great hikes in Kapaau and Pololu Valley.

Nice house and beautiful land, but a bit outdated and with some oddities to be considered,

The house comes with some particular rules that might be of concern to some guests. The major one is that toilet paper cannot be flushed. It was not a problem for our group since we are all campers but I can see how it could be an issue for someone who was not aware of the rule in advance. Also, only one of the showers is indoors. We thoroughly enjoyed the outside showers, but again I could see how this could be an issue for some people. Especially considering that there are farmers constantly waking the grounds and privacy might be of concern. The house itself is beautiful and well laid, but very few if any toiletries are provided and the mattresses have seen better days. We tried using the grill, but it was so dirty that I would have considered it unsanitary.

Lovely home that suited our family quite well.

The house is very private and has lovely, spacious rooms with high ceilings and the lanai was a perfect place to hang out and enjoy the beautiful view. All three bedrooms are nicely appointed and comfortable, though for our family, the beds were too soft. The large kitchen worked very well and had most of the necessities such as glasses, cutlery and utensils we needed. One highlight was the availability of the organic farm's produce and we ate delicious greens and fruit from their orchards. Hawi is delightfully cool and lush with a charming town nearby and there are many activities quite close by such as fluming, horseback riding, ziplining and going to the beach. There were a few communication issues that detracted slightly from the overall experience. We had to ask for hand soap, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent and toilet paper, as what was available in the house was very limited. While there is often a list of do's and don'ts with any rental, we were surprised to learn that we could not flush toilet paper down the toilet. Overall, we highly recommend this property. It is ideally suited for families.

Zen

We spent 5 blissful days/nights with our children (4 & 7). I can't imagine a more peaceful, restorative accommodation on the Big Island, or any island. The house/property has everything you need. Thank you Richard & Natalie for sharing your beautiful home, property, produce, knowledge & time. The only bad thing about this place is leaving. Stop looking and book it, you'll be happy.

Wonderful Hawi home on a beautiful organic farm with view of Maui.

Five of us had plenty of room on this beautiful property. We were feet away from a vegetable garden and were provided with fresh lilikoi, bananas, oranges and lemons. Much to love about this house including two outdoor showers (Loved them!), great kitchen, wonderful porch and beautiful views. We stayed in Hawi to be near a smaller quaint town and found what we wanted, but it was wetter than southern areas. We drove a lot to get to places, but were also able to walk right into town five minutes away. The only we wanted was better beds to sleep on (firmness). Hospitality was fantastic.

Charming, well-appointed, great views

We stayed four nights at the Lokahi Garden Sanctuary. A beautiful location on a working farm, this was a great launching off point to explore Hawi and the north side of the Big Island. While not walkable to the ocean, the views of the Pacific are fantastic, and you can see across to Maui on a clear day. The house is clean and well-appointed, with everything we could have needed. Our hosts were the right amount of welcoming (bringing us fruit from the farm) but otherwise hands off. Note that as a working farm, there a number of farmhands and others around during the day, but we found them unobtrusive and didn't even notice after a day or two. Highly recommend this spot to others, and would stay here again should we return to the Big Island.

Lokahi Garden Sanctuary in Heavenly Hawi

This beautiful, peaceful property was the perfect place for my family of four over the New Year's holiday. We rented the entire home for 4 days and found it to be even better than the listing description. Immaculate and lovingly cared for, this is indeed a sanctuary. The reservation process was straightforward and Dr. Liebmann and his wife Natalie made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We especially enjoyed touring their 7 acre organic farm with him and learning about the healing plants they grew and their delicious organic produce. The bedrooms and living area were spacious and the kitchen was exceptionally well-equipped. Perched on the tip of the north Kohala coast, this property had spectacular views of Maui's Haleakala volcano wreathed in clouds rising out of the ocean. Since this was the first visit to North Kohala for 3 of us, we drove to beaches and resorts along the Kawaihae coast all the way to Kona one day, visited Waimea another day and explored charming Hawi on the third day. We planned an evening departure on our last day and drove south of Hilo to visit Madame Pele in her home at Halemaumau Crater before flying back to Honolulu. The Jagger Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in volcanoes. We arrived and departed from Hilo rather than Kona. Hawi is almost equidistant from the two airports and I found rental cars to be much less expensive in Hilo. The driving distances can be long because of the massive size of Hawaii Island but the scenery that unfolds is unlike anywhere in Hawaii, especially on the drive from Waimea to Hawi. The lush green rolling pastures of the Parker Ranch and the peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa were mesmerizing. No photograph could capture the vastness of the beauty, but we tried! Our family looks forward to our next visit to Lokahi Garden Sanctuary and we all recommend it highly.

5 Star Accommodations!

This place is truly a sanctuary. It is gorgeous, with windows across the entire wall overlooking the gardens and ocean. Beautiful accommodations for our family reunion. We enjoyed the large, nicely furnished great room, kitchen/dining room and the wonderful lanai for enjoying the outdoor living space. with table and outdoor furniture for eating and relaxing. We actually spent one day being at the house as it was a vacation all in itself! We were taken care of very well with fresh eggs and vegetables right from their organic gardens. Will be back to this garden sanctuary!!

Custom home with Maui view

Very clean modern home with fantastic view north to Maui in a country setting. Is a working 10 acre organic farm but NO roosters! Comfy living room, full kitchen, huge gas grill, and a big lanai. Farm workers are a bit close for comfort. Master bedroom shower outside and no master bedroom closet, so it loses a 1/2 star. Will return in a heartbeat.

Family bonding retreat

My two adult children, their spouses, and our 21/2 year old just spent a week at Richard and Natalie's lovely serene home. It was perfect for us. The master bedroom is at one end of the house so we put the family with the baby there. They had their own bathroom and privacy. The house itself was way beyond my expectations. It was also well equipped for what we wanted to do which was relax, cook, explore, surf and beach. The hammock stretched between two lanai poles overlooking the organic farm and beautiful Pacific became the focal point for afternoon story time and early sunset watching. The house has no TV which suited us just fine, but excellent internet for those who needed to retreat for a bit of work or who may have wanted to watch late night movies in their rooms. The only reason I did not check the "good for romantic retreat button" was because it IS a working farm and there are folks around. But we thoroughly enjoyed talking to Richard and Co. You will need a car to surf or beach, but there are endless lovely spots to be discovered. As mentioned by others, Hawi is a darling town with several really good places to eat and friendly folks. BUT IS NOT LIKE MANY "touristy" towns on other islands, at least it was not in early November. THe short 20+ minute drive to Waimia, is breathtaking as was almost every place we visited. There's a great kid park there for little kids, and Merrimans is a great place for farm/table food. If you get tired of the country ( which we didn't) there are lovely resort hotels just a short drive away. We found fresh fish markets, vegetable and fruit stands, and the kona airport is a dream compared to LaX. Also many local beaches in coves for little kids with small waves and surf beaches for big kids with big waves. In short I can't say enough. Mahalo Richard and Natalie. We would definitely return.

Ladies get-a-way in March 2013

Lokahi Garden Sanctuary Lodge is located in the delightful small town of Hawi on the north coast of Hawaii. The house, with three bedrooms, two baths, a lovely open kitchen-dining area and living room was perfect for our ladies get-a-way in March 2013. It was comfortable and contributed to our spending quality time together while visiting, fixing meals and enjoying the warm, lush environment. The Lani, running the length of the house, was a pleasant place for meals and relaxing, with a view of pastures and the ocean. In the mornings, song birds announced the day. The gardens surrounding the house are interesting and scented the air with herbal fragrances. A short walk into Hawi found us at the local coffee shop, a fun gathering spot for friendly locals and visitors. Good restaurants with live music at night, interesting galleries, and small boutiques make visiting the area fun. Richard and Natalie are great hosts. The fresh vegetables and eggs add to the charm. Natalie also does great massages. We enjoyed our time here and found the location ideal for our gathering of friends.

Studio Apartment

I enjoyed a week's stay in the studio apartment while on a project in the Kohala Area. It was the perfect place - easy walk to Hawi for meals or cook my own right there, excellent reception for phone and emails, and a pleasant table and chairs on the porch to do some work while listening to the hens. The queen bed had an amazingly comfortable mattress. For one or two people, it is way more convenient than a hotel room and, like others said, the organic farming is a nice variation from the average resort ambiance. I would definately recommend the studio apartment to anyone not needing the big ocean view, which you see everywhere you drive in Kohala, anyway.

Spectacular Home, Wonderful Garden, Working Farm

Our family of 7 (3 small children, 2 parents, and 2 grandparents) spent a wonderful, rejuvenating week here at this glorious and comfortable home surrounded by all the thriving plants. Our daughters loved helping feed the sheep and chickens and collecting the eggs, and we enjoyed preparing meals from the food grown right here on the property. The home is only a short walk to the town Hawi with a lovely collection of restaurants and shops and a great Farmer's market. We observed the Transit of Venus on June 5th from nearby Hapuna Beach -- it was a beautiful sight.

Farm Living in Paradise

Our family of five including grandparents in their 90's stayed here for 6 nights in March. Richard and Natalie were gracious hosts. Richard gave us a marvelous tour of his remarkable farm & he shared some of his crops with us that we were able to purchase: 2 exotic fruits we had not had before: Poha and Rambutan which were delicious! Also, leg of lamb, eggs, potatoes, cherry tomatoes, lettuces, greens, asparagus, radishes and spices. Natalie brought us samples of exotic scented Hawaiian flowers: spider lily, the double pikake and the pua kini kini. She made us a special tea one night with some spices from her garden, including holy basil, mint, terragon and verbena, which was delicious. She is a licensed massage therapist and has lots of tips on the healing of muscle aches and pains & will also give you a professional massage if desired. Richard is a Naturopath and has some of his herbal products for different ailments available to purchase. He has an incredible green thumb as evidenced by the flourishing farm. Natalie and Richard came over one evening to take us to watch the sheep being fed. It was a joy to see the little lambs kick up their heels in excitement. Richard and Natalie have 2 double kayaks and have invited to take us kayaking next time we come:-). The star gazing is magnificent here..we saw Venus, Mars and Jupiter one night. Would recommend bringing cards or some sort of entertainment for evenings as there is no television reception there which was nice.

Beautiful, Sustainable, & Welcoming

Our family had the pleasure of staying for a week in the lodge this past September and we could not have found a more beautiful, sustainable, and welcoming place to stay on the Big Island. First the lodge: a spacious and luxurious home with 3 bedrooms, master spa with garden tub, a gourmet kitchen, and a huge porch from which you can see Maui. The outdoor shower off the master spa has a great view of the gardens with the ocean in the distance; superb and tranquil. The sanctuary is a real working organic farm with a large selection of vegetables, citrus, and eggs available. We were allowed to pick as much citrus fruit from the trees as we required and the produce from the farm was fresh and delicious. On Saturdays produce from the farm is also sold in the Hawi farmers market which is a charming town with one of the best restaurants on the island. Finally, the best part of our experience was the people. Richard and Natalie are very welcoming hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with them. They made us feel very comfortable, gave us great advice on the best beaches and hikes, showed us around the farm, and were so kind to our young son (he loved feeding chickens in the morning). Everyone working at the farm was very kind and we will cherish our time spent with them all until we can visit again. So if you're looking for commercialized Hawaii, this is not the place for you, but if you're looking to have an authentic experience of real Hawaii and meet some really great folks this should be at the top of your Big Island list.

Special place

We arrived in the town of Hawi with directions on how to get to Lokahi Garden Sanctuary, having no idea where it was or what it was like. The directions were easy to follow and the road almost led us directly into the driveway, which was a dirt road that continued for several hundred yards, past a storage building to the parking area in front of the house. The front entry looked in on a beautifully appointed great room and you could see through to the ocean in the near distance. Unfortunately, it turned out that this was the home of our hosts. We were warmly greeted and directed back to the storage building, which turned out to have a complete well-appointed studio, with great ventilation, a large bathroom and shower, comfortable bed, and it's own very tranquil yard and space. While we didn't have the view of the ocean, we did have the wonderful hens and fruit trees in our front yard. If you are looking for a tranquil place to nurture and heal yourself, a place to be at peace, strongly consider this space. On the other hand, with Hawi just around the corner, there are great restaurants and galleries to visit, and Kona isn't that far away. Most of the restaurants have music on several of the evenings, but if you are a stay at home body, the night sky is incredible. Our hosts were gracious and helpful and had organic vegetables and fruits available for purchase. We can't wait to return.

Unique and Wonderful Spot

We recently stayed at the Lokahi Garden Sanctuary and had a wonderful eight days there. If you're looking for brochure Hawaii, drinks with little umbrellas, and those tourist trappings, this isn't the place for you. However, if you are looking for a little slice of paradise, to disconnect, to relax, and to get back closer to the land, you can't do any better. I'm not sure the pictures really do justice to the well-crafted, well-detailed house itself, or to the property as a whole; it really is a neat place. We would definitely come back, and hope that we can.

Happy to be back

We're back for the third stay in this lovely garden studio. The space is light and airy looking out to a beautiful topical garden. The studio has a pleasing simplicity, is well equipped, maintained and clean,. Our hosts Richard and Natalie are wonderful, very gracious, helpful and informative. It is a really special location, very private , being in the midst of a 10acre garden, beautiful ocean views just a few steps from the studio and a 10 minute walk into the town of Hawi. Everything works well for us here and we're happy to be back. I have and would definitely recommend this property to friends or relatives we certainly enjoy being here.

Lokahi Gardens, North Kohala, Hawi, Hawaii

We had a wonderful time at Lokahi Garden Sanctuary. The hosts, Natalie and Richard, made us feel welcomed, at ease and were very gracious. We have stayed here twice, once in the main house and a second time in the studio cottage. The house offers a nice queen sized bed with bath down the hallway. There is a beautiful ocean view from the room and from the rest of the house. (The photos you see on this site are of the house and they accurately reflect the setting and the standard you can expect.) For more privacy, the guest cottage is nestled in the orchards. While it does not have an ocean view, it does offer its own kitchen, laundry and is surrounded by greenery. We liked that too. Lokahi Gardens is located on the dryer side of Hawi, North Kohala (which means in the winter time it is less rainy.) It is in excellent proximity to the coastline and only minutes from Hawi town. Very convenient. Lots of great shops and restaurants in Hawi town. Try Bamboo and Sushi Rock -- both very good. Overall Lokahi Gardens is very clean and well maintained. It is impressive that there is so much food being grown in the gardens here! The owners are very committed to sustainability. I have been to numerous vacation rentals and B&Bs on the Big Island and I definitely recommend this one. -- Susanne S., Author, Healing Vacations in Hawaii -- Richard D., Health Practitioner

Our past guests remark on the incredible beauty and peacefulness they experience while staying here at Lokahi Garden Sanctuary. We have created a garden sanctuary where the plants and trees thrive.
