One of the highlights of the property is stepping into the spacious tropical outdoor shower complete with a sitting area and hammock nestled among the ti leaves.

just wonderful

We were welcomed in the house by Naomi who showed us all in the house and garden. Thank you Naomi! The house is big and has all you can need, well equipped kitchen - a kind welcome set of foods and drink- and oil and vinegar any herbs should you want to cook, large living room and large bedroom with a super large, super good bed, walk in wardrobe, bathroom, all equipped with fans that run noiseless. We did not use the living room (I forgot to mention the dining area) since we sat on the terrace with sea view- just great. The garden is large and beautiful and we were invited to eat the kale and herbs. The star is the outdoor shower, so beautifully designed with plants, just wonderful. The front part of the house is separate and occupied by the sun of the family, who we never saw or heard but would have been there for questions. Very discrete. There are nice beaches near by, a good guide can be found in the house. We also drove along the west cost to Captain cook monument and the painted church etc - a drive of about 2 hours. The house of Marti and Ed is perfect for a relaxing stay and has just one problem: you don’t want to leave it. Thank you for having us!

Wonderful restful retreat

This lovely house was great! It was so peaceful and gorgeous here. It had everything we needed and more. The bed was very comfortable and the outdoor shower was amazing. The listing and photos here do not do it justice! Sean was very helpful. This is our favorite place so far to stay in our 11 trips (4th to Big Island) to the islands. We also really loved having the cats, Pili and Kia, here. Made us less homesick for our pets. The cats completely accepted us and hung out with us. Thanks for a great relaxing stay! Heaven on Kohala Coast

Had a fantastic time on our trip and this property definitely was a highlight. Loved the house, the views, the gardens, the amenities, and the cats. Everything was lovely and Sean was available whenever we had questions. Bring your bathing suit and feel confident that that’s about all you’ll need if you rent this property!

Beautiful location, great property

This is a wonderful and relaxing place to stay if you want to be far away from the resorts and crowds. Place is clean and well appointed. If you like cats, you’re in luck. There are 2 resident cats that enjoy the home as much as you will. They are not shy and are happy to keep you company. If, like me, you are not a cat person and would prefer a completely “no pets” experience, inquire within regarding the situation. Unlike the resorts 1/2 hour away, you are in a more natural setting which was my preference.

A piece of paradise

My husband and I had an amazing stay at Kohala Estates. The views were fantastic! The house was beautiful, tastefully furnished and decorated. It had everything we could have wished for. The highly recommended outdoor shower was very nice. We liked the little garden and enjoyed the parsley and papaya. The two feline residents were very friendly. They joined us as we watched picturesque sunrises and sunsets. This is a very safe place to stay and perfect couples retreat. Sean was very accommodating. He explained everything and answered any questions we had. Sean also planted a memory tree for us. We hope to return one day to see how it grew.

Exceptional

Beautiful (!) expansive ocean and Moana Loa (mountain volcano) views from lanais and virtually every room at this gorgeous hilltop location. Kohala Kai is beautifully & comfortably furnished inside and out, even better than in the photos! Everything was new & immaculate, and of very high quality. A well equipped kitchen! The tropical outdoor shower is amazing, a real Garden of Eden. The property is beautifully landscaped and. offers complete privacy and quiet. Our host Sean was exceptional; very responsive to our questions, very helpful with suggestions of, among other things, the best places to snorkel; a pleasure to be around and attentive without ever being intrusive. We really had the place to ourselves, including lanais and outdoor spaces, as there is great separation between the vacation rental and the caretaker ‘s (Sean’s) quarters. We visited during a heat spell (hot at least by our Olympia WA standard!) but found comfortable soft breezes on the covered lanais and the ceiling fans kept us comfortable at night. We encouraged visits from Kohala Kai’s two well-behaved cats. The dawns, sunsets and stars were amazing. The pleasant breeze carried scents from flowering trees and lovely garden plants. Everything about this place is beautiful and inviting. Kohala Kai is exceptional!

Private and Beautiful Kohala Coast Get-away

This is the perfect setting to relax and unwind. The house and lanai are comfortable, spacious and inviting. The one bedroom one bath guest portion of the house has a full kitchen, separate dining and living areas. The bedroom has an additional walkout to the lanai and sunset views. The outdoor spaces on both front and back are garden-gorgeous and have many seating/dining areas to take advantage of every angle of the sun and ocean viewing. The hammock and outdoor shower add to the Hawaiian luxury feel. The hosts and great and easy to work with. And the stargazing at night cant be beat!

Wonderful Visit

We had a fantastic time staying at Kohala Kai. The house is comfortable, well equipped with beautiful outdoor living space. The views of the Kohala coastline are gorgeous. Our host Sean was very thoughtful and helpful throughout our stay. Thank you Sean, we won’t forget you. We had great activity recommendations from Marti and Ed the property owners who are long time Island residents.

Beautiful garden with gorgeous view

Property is as described, very clean, spacious, and with a beautiful elevated ocean view. Owner has artistic touch on all the plants and decorations. Every where you look is beautiful. We enjoy looking at the stars at night. The house sits in a very quiet and secluded hill. The manager Sean is very friendly and helpful. The reason of 4 stars instead of 5 is its isolated location. But if you enjoy peaceful nature and beauty, this is the perfect place for you.

About the host

Hosted by Marti & Ed Henrickson

Host profile image
We are recently retired and travel extensively. Having lived in our home since 2000 we know how special a place this is. We divided our home into 2 separate apartments. Each with private entrances and lanais.

Our son, Sean lives in the "other" unit. We are very fortunate to have him live so near to allow us the privilege of travel and have our home taken care of as we travel throughout the world. This year is Israel, Egypt and Jordan.

Our travels have truly proven the fact that this is one of the most beautiful spots on earth and are pleased to start sharing it with our guests.

Why they chose this property

Each and every day that we have lived here has been a blessing. We are so pleased to share it with others during our absence.

The birds wake us up in the mornings and we fall asleep with open windows and doors feeling the cool night breezes.

You will find the sheer joy of simplicity as you watch the waves or listen to the birds. It is not uncommon to get lost in the beauty around you.

What makes this property unique

The floor plan of this shared property allows for a private entrance and private ocean view lanais. You often feel like you are the only folks on the property on nearly 2 acres.

The outdoor shower is one of the best parts of the property. To shower surrounded by orchids, ti leaves and ferns is another blessing to living in Hawaii.
