About this property

Historic Seaside Cottage with its own beaches overlooking Penobscot Bay..

The Gables is a historic cottage built in the mid to late 1800's and has always been family owned. The 2 plus acre property is located on a very quiet road surrounded by cottages built by our great great grandfather. The Gables comes with its own private beaches, plenty of lawn for yard games, a hammock for napping and a back porch for watching sailboats cruise the bay. Bring your own kayak, paddle boards, or row boat to get out on the water yourself. The island is friendly for road bikes if you have one you want to bring. Just down the road from the property there is a playground and tennis courts. Be on the lookout for pop-up yoga classes as well.
If you give us a heads up we can put you in touch with a local lobsterman for fresh off the boat lobster or mussels.
The Gables is great for families, couples or the solo traveler wanted to find some quite solitude.
There are two stores on the island for food, a bakery, and a sandwich/ice cream shop. In addition there are a number of gift shops for souvenirs.
For the yachting enthusiast the cottage has its own 6 ton mooring just off the beach.
Be sure and check the ferry schedule--see photos. More information at town of islesboro website.

Great property!

We stayed in August. Absolutely gorgeous setting. Beach access was very nice. We were able to leave our kayaks at the beach and walk down every day. It was a nice, quiet and relaxing stay. Everyone on the island was very nice. We had a great time!

Picturesque property

Our stay at the Gables was outstanding. Mike and Ginnie were gracious hosts and communication was easy. The cottage exceeded our expectations: the porch, the view, the island, the history…we loved it all!

Better than ever

This is our third summer in a row staying here, and we had a great time as usual. The bathroom and porch renovations were a very nice surprise this year, and we are already looking forward to hopefully staying again next summer!

Very Quiet Charming Oceanside Home

Excellent getaway. Home is warm and nicely decorated with all modern amenities. Charming handcrafted wood construction throughout. Well kept. Three upstairs bedrooms remind of simpler days. Waves lapping the shore put us asleep. Good communication with owner. Would stay again.

A stay too short

Cottage was in a great location, with a wonderful "perch" overlooking the cove adjacent to the property. Our stay was sadly cut short and we did not have a chance to enjoy everything Islesboro had to offer but Mike and Ginnie were very accommodating and would recommend this property highly.

Like the old days!

This cottage is for the nostalgic vacationer. The location is great and there is lot's of coast line to explore right out the door. I spent hours on the porch where the sun shone since it was chilly in October. Got carry out meals during Covid and one or two shops were still open.

Sweet Islesboro Cottage

We stayed in Islesboro Aug. 15-21 at Mike and Ginnie's cute cottage. Beautiful location with beach and lots to walk to....library, play ground, tennis courts, etc. And just a short bike ride to just about anywhere else on the island- ice cream in Dark Harbor or coffee at the Rock Cafe anyone? We have been to Islesboro 3 times before but still had plenty to see and explore. Mike set us up with a mooring for our boat, just outside the cottage door. This was so awesome and a real bonus for our week. There is a wonderful hammock to relax in and a sweet little front porch for hanging out. We even made it to Ginnie's yoga class held outside. I have to say how easy it was to communicate with Mike. He is super responsive and was there to greet us when we arrived and give us a tour of the place(along with a neat history of his cottage and the area). We had no problems with any logistics and Mike assured us to contact him anytime if we needed anything. All was well.

An authentic Maine cottage

This cottage reminded me of going to Grandma’s house...in all of the best possible ways! We spent a beautiful fall weekend watching eagles fly I over the cove in front of the house, then tucking in at night in cozy beds piled with quilts. It was heavenly

An amazing gem!

We loved this property! Everything about it was authentic and Isleboro was amazing. We loved the fact that it wasn't overrun with tourists....except us of course! Would love to stay here again.

Relaxing visit to a beautiful location

My wife and I just returned from a brief visit to this charming property. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our host, Michael, who graciously showed us around the property and gave us a very interesting historical overview of this home that has been in his family for generations. The house had everything we needed, the kitchen was perfect and the bedrooms were charming. The beds were so comfortable, plenty of pillows and linens, and the screened windows made for an incredible nights sleep. The only sounds we heard were of nature, even saw an eagle flying overhead with a fish it had just caught. The best part of all though were the incredible views. Waterfront views from the home and we were able to take a short walk down to the water. A fantastic home, hope to return soon!

About the host

I grew up here on Islesboro and I am happy to still call this island my home. I ran off as a young adult to sail the oceans of the world on private yachts and current hold a 500 ton masters captain's license. I have set my sea boots aside to return home to be closer to family and co-own the family business, Clayton Builders, with my brother Mark. When I am not hosting "The Gables", I am building and restoring island homes. I still love getting out of the water and any free moment is spent cruising the local waters.

Why they chose this property

My great great grandfather built this place and surrounding homes.
