About this property

Mountain Cabin Retreat FAST WiFi, Ski Sipapu,Hike, Hunt,Fish,Art, Taos, Santa Fe

Huge deck with propane grill, table and chairs & hummingbird feeders. Backyard creek with hammocks, picnic tables, chairs, & fire pit.
Well stocked kitchen includes coffee maker w/ coffee, toaster, Keurig, blender, crock pot, electric skillet, mixer, food processor, ricer/steamer, citrus juicer, cake pans, muffin pans and cookie sheets. Refrigerator with ice maker.
Gas heat and wood stove with romantic glass doors. Plenty of firewood.
Lots of free strawberry plants.

Ice cold streams run through timbered mountains. Find your quiet space and enjoy the peace, clean air, dark, starry nights. Leave the mundane things of life behind and discover yourself, your own thoughts and feelings. The back yard is the main attraction for us at Mountain Cabin Retreat. The grass surrounding the creek, the bridge where we sat and dangled our feet in the cold mountain stream, imagining family gatherings around the campfire. The first step through the front door said, “Welcome home”. During our many years here, we have done a lot of remodeling. The quality workmanship is evident the moment you step through the entry door. The wood stove mesmerizes, lighting and warming the hardwood floor. The coved log ceiling beams, called vigas, reflect centuries old architecture. The quiet speaks of reflection on today, yesterday, and tomorrow, on life and purpose. The dark skies look back through millenniums of time and displays an eternity of celestial bodies. Yes, we warmly invite you to come and experience the alluring appeal of Mountain Cabin Retreat.
The 1400 sq. ft. make for a spacious 2-bedroom house. All rooms are large. The cozy, comfy living room has the wood stove with plenty of firewood. TV’s with ROKU, DVD and VCR players are in the living room and the Buffalo Room. The Buffalo Room also serves as an additional sleeping area. There is also the opportunity for wildlife viewing from the Buffalo Room and the dining room. Many times we have seen elk, coyote, birds and more. The hummingbirds are a real attraction at the feeders on the deck.
Special note: bedroom 2 is accessed through master bedroom. Both have queen beds.
The Buffalo Room is on the opposite side of the house, making it quite private from the master bedroom and bedroom 2, and has a sofa bed, futon and a single bed.
No smoking is allowed in the house. Designated outside smoking areas are provided. The last 1 mile to the house is a gravel road that is well maintained by the county road department.

Great host

Our stay was wonderful! The home was clean and cozy. The host was an amazing person, very friendly and very accommodating. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable. We really enjoyed the conversation cards at the dinner table. It allowed great topics of discussion with our kids. Thank you for opening your home to us.

Cozy stay close to Sipapu

We happened to hit a snowstorm just right and had a great weekend skiing at Sipapu. Our hosts had a nice cozy fire going for us when we got there, and they even gave us some tokens for discounts at one of the wineries nearby. One little piece of advice - cell service is pretty bad up there, so be sure to have the door code saved somewhere, because you may not be able to pull up the app. The wifi works great though, once you get in!

South of Penasco

Dirt road to quiet and privacy. Cool evenings . About 45 minutes to Taos which has great food and the Taos Cow. Wife loves the shopping (e.g.Moxie). Josey had a fenced yard and a creek to splash in. We have multiple stays here and the owners have become like family.

Perfect Mountain Home

We loved staying at Jim and Mari Lu's home in the mountains above Santa Fe. We came for the feast day celebrations at Picuris Pueblo, for the weaving in Chimayo, and for hiking in Bandolier National Monument, all of which are easy to access, as are Taos and Santa Fe, which gave us all kinds of options. The home is on a safe, quiet mountain road, with a lovely creek out back and hammocks we took full advantage of. It is well equipped, the beds are comfortable, the coffee machine is stocked, and the WiFi is strong. Jim and Mari Lu, who offered homemade salsa to welcome us, were the perfect hosts, unobtrusive but available when we needed them. The "neighborhood" is very quiet, and the night sky is an astronomer's dream. We look forward to returning.

Jim and Mari Lu were great hosts, responsive and very welcoming. We felt like we were at home. Mari Lu gave us some of her delicious salsa. The hummingbirds were plentiful and a joy to watch. We and our pup enjoyed the nearby stream and the deck.

Great Getaway

Cute little house not too far from Sipapu and Taos. We had a group of 7 ppl and we all loved it. We got to see snowfall at the cabin and it was gorgeous, especially over the back yard. Everything was well stocked, we love having the washer and dryer and the wood stove was nice as well. There isn't a lot in the area so we cooked at the cabin a lot and the only thing we missed was a dishwasher. The host are awesome and readily available if you need anything. We would definitely stay again if in the area.

Great property with fantastic views!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The space was large and well stocked with everything we needed. In addition, there were VCR and DVD players with a wide range of movies that came in handy after a long day spent skiing (in addition to streaming television access). Great location that offered a fantastic view. We will be staying again!

Snowboarding trip

As I would love to rate this home 5 stars, I cannot. Cleanliness: We arrived well past check-in to find the couple cleaning. The toilet had not been cleaned among other things such as dishes in the sink. Being that they were in the home this made CHECK IN quite awkward, but simple. They were apologetic and left a bottle of wine. Listing accuracy: Everything is as pictured, however I wish I'd known the 2 bedrooms are conjoined and there is not much privacy as you must go into ones room to get to the bathroom. I feel that this is important information. Communication: there was over communication in the sense that the home owners popped in and out randomly which made me very uncomfortable and was a complete invasion of privacy. Cake was brough while we were in the middle of dinner at the table which was sweet but it felt like more like we were being watched. They also came by while we were gone during the day. Its obvious they stay nearby. THis information needs to be listed and I would have NOT stayed in this home. We texted to ask if there was a way to watch the playoff football game that evening with no response. So, if you plan to watch an event expect to watch from your phone as there is no tv options that we could figure out and zero cell service. The location is off the path a bit, trust the maps would be my advice. Overall, the home is very spacious. The wood burning fire was nice. The oven shoots flames if you use the broil feature. The couple was nice.

Great vacation!

2nd stay this summer and we loved it. Great property. MariLu and Jim are super hosts. Great Wi-Fi - streaming worked great so we could keep up with Astros. Our dog enjoyed fenced area for dogs to move around and daily trips to the creek behind the house. Very relaxing vacation. We love the new comfortable couch. Great kitchen! Loved the deck and carport. If your lucky, MariLu and Jim might bring you some homemade salsa. Already planning for next summer.

Beautiful scenery and gracious host

This Florida family spent Christmas at the Adobe Mountain Retreat and had a wonderful time. The mountains and snow are so very different (and beautiful) from our norm. The cabin was well appointed and met our needs. The host did a great job communicating with us and when the power went out (briefly), he drove to the cabin to check on us. We had a wonderful holiday experience in Santa Fe and Taos from this central location in the mountains.

Nice quite getaway

Went with my daughter and her 2 Boston Terriers. They have a really nice place by the creek with hammocks, a fire pit and it’s secluded so you can enjoy the sound of the creek and relax. Hosts were great, always checking with us and made us feel welcomed. There is a strawberry patch there and we were allowed to pick them and the host even brought us over some salsa she made which was super nice of her. Will definitely stay there again if I ever come back that way.

Peaceful Mountain Home

We really felt at home in this roomy and comfortable house. The kitchen is large and well equipped. No real need for bottled water given the good quality of water from the tap. We ate most meals at the big dining table while looking out at the mountains. The backyard creek is a wonderful relaxing spot. The bath has all you need. Mari Lu and Jim are friendly, and very responsive hosts. Thank you for the tasty salsa and the chokecherries.💜

Nice, clean house; on-line description details incomplete

The house was very clean and had all the amenities as described. We had a relaxing time. However, we were very unhappy that access to the property is via a 1-mile GRAVEL road and the house is very close to that road. We were traveling in a vehicle purchased within the month, and would NOT have booked this property if we had known this prior to the check-in e-mail received just days before arriving. Since the full payment was non-refundable, we had no recourse. The pictures of the property are beautiful, but there are abandoned structures and a car, plus lots of junk on the property. We rented the property, only because it is “pet friendly”, but signs inside the house restricted our small dog to half the house.

About the host

Hosted by Jim and Mari Lu Jensen

Host profile image
We are baby boomers, 24 years into a great marriage. We're both still quite active and hope to be for some time yet. Mari Lu is a Santa Fe native and Jim is a native Oregonian. Mari Lu loves cooking and we both enjoy the rural mountain life, hiking, fishing, 4 wheeling, camping, canoeing, remodeling, and look forward to some traveling in the future.

What makes this property unique

We were moving from the Oregon desert and wanted mountains and trees. Mari Lu was originally from Santa Fe and has family in the area. Once we found Chamisal and met the wonderful people here, things just started falling into place. The first time we walked through the front door, even though it was night, I knew this was our home. The creek in the back yard clinched it. It was in need of remodeling yet as a retired carpenter and the remodelers that we are, we knew we could do it. We moved in and went to work replacing the roof, exposing and coving the vigas, tearing out the old flooring and putting in the hardwood flooring, adding the wood stove, replacing doors, adding the patio and deck, etc., etc. It's been a labor of love and we are very happy to make it available for others to enjoy. Perhaps some day we will move back into it.
