Quiet vacation spot

Second time renting the property. Enjoyed the seclusion and the sunsets over the sound. Having the horses visit us in the morning is nice.

Great time had by all. It was wonderful to have the seclusion and easy access to beach.

We all had a fabulous time with 4 kids and 6 adults! Plenty of things to do and the house was the perfect size. Owner was very accommodating when we needed a late check out due to car trouble. Thanks again and maybe we'll see you in the future!

I can not tell you how great this vacation was!!! The house was so well stocked. The pool and hot tub were perfect! Fishing was amazing. The views were breathtaking. The drive down the beach to get there was awesome. We saw horses everyday! Everyone was so friendly. It’s was like going back in time. The dunes!! Omg the dunes!

Secluded quiet location

The owners made the experience easy. We were looking for a different vacation than previous ones. This property fit our criteria of what we wanted. The ease for check in and out was easy. All the recommendations should be followed. Such as, stop and do your shopping prior to arrival, be sure to have a 4x4 vehicle and be aware of the wild horses and other animals. There was plenty room for our group of 14. The kids of course thought the pool should've been bigger but when spending the majority of time at the ocean, the pool was great. A fantastic time was had by all.

Outstanding Vacation

Overall the house was beautiful and we had a great time. Very cool experience driving on the beach and seeing the wild horses. The only thing I would complain about is the road itself, we knew what we were getting into with the 4x4 beach driving but Mobjack Terrace was probably the roughest road in there, we had a little bit of a hard time but understand its out of the home owners control. Access to the water was perfect for our boat. Pool and hot tub were clean and enjoyable. Although we had an issue with the oven not working properly and hoped to have it repaired while we were there, the maintenance people did help us out with a few things and were very nice. We would definitely vacation there again in the future.

Like nothing else!

What a neat place for a vacation. This was our first time to the outer banks. Corova is the place to be! My kids loved driving up the beach. Wildlife is everywhere. This house is big, clean, modern and comfortable. Plenty of space for everyone. The pool and hot tub are really nice touches. As are the kayaks for exploring the canal system. The owner and management company are both very professional and easy to deal with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house and this destination to anyone, as long as they have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We will surely be returning. Thank you!

Perfect 4wd Beach Vacation!

I am getting ready to book another OBX vacation and realized I had not written a review for my best trip, ever! I've been going to the Outer Banks for over 20 years and I'm happy to say this house and its owners provided me with the best vacation possible. I had not stayed in this immediate area before, but plan to return each year. This house has all the creature comforts one could ask for. Take advantage of the Kayaks! Its a short paddle to the Sound and it really adds to the experience. Horses were in the yard every morning to add to the fun! I would write a longer and even more glowing review, but I recommend you experience this home for yourself.

Definitely remote and quiet

Our family really enjoyed the pool and hot tub. Seeing the horses close up was great, they would stand under the deck right outside the lower level door. Kitchen is equipped very nicely. I would recommend approaching the house from a beach access point farther north than the owner recommended driving instructions. To avoid multiple, very large (total width of roadway and 20 to 30 feet wide), deep, and water filled holes in the Corova area roads--go north to the mile 22 dune marker. Parking on the beach was great for beach activities. The house is remote and quiet. It easily can take 1-2 hours to get to Kitty Hawk or Nags Head Island attractions. Our older teenagers wanted to do things away from the house and the travel south for those activities added up.

Secluded and magical

This property is an adorable little house located very far back off the beach. We did not mind it but did not realize just how back in the woods it is. But once you get there it is a beautiful little retreat. The house was well stocked and clean. The pool and hot tub were very clean. The little beach was adorable and my husband and kids fished all week back there. The horses came right up on our property all week - stood right next to my husband while he fished and drank out of the sound! :) It is about a 5 min drive to the beach. Very quiet . Take all the recommendations - buy lots of groceries because it is a far way to get to any store. Also the nearest hospital / urgent care is over 1 hour away. We had little kids so just something to note. The grill is picnic style as they mentioned.. that is the only thing I would love to see upgraded in the future. But will definitely be returning!

Foiled by Matthew

Unfortunately, we were unable to complete our visit to the OBX due to the arrival of hurricane Matthew. This however did not end our relationship with the property owner. During the run up to our departure and the arrival of the hurricane we were receiving regular communications regarding the weather and the likely need to postpone our arrival for several days which we choose to do. As luck would have it once our drop dead date arrived access to the island was still restricted to residents and property owners. Again our relationship did not end. Having purchased travel insurance with our original booking we began the claim process. This turned out to be more difficult than expected. A message to the property owner got us quickly back on track and after jumping through the proverbial hoops we received our refund. The property owner stayed with us through this entire process and we are most grateful. So, while we cannot speak to the beauty of the location or the cleanliness of the property, we can say if those things are in line with the efforts made by the owner on our behalf the property will certainly not disappoint. We will be rebooking.

Property was nice and peaceful

Property was nice but the cleaning crew could have done a better job. Outside pool area still had bottles laying around and the lady cleaning came back to the property looking for her phone and said she had stayed in the room downstairs the night before.

Great getaway for a large family!

Our family had a great time at this house. The house has plenty of room to spread out and everyone can have their space. The kitchen is large and open and worked out great for us. The house does come stocked well, just be aware to bring toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap and hand soap! Like all the reviews say the roads are rough and most were flooded for us but a truck will make it through just fine. Overall a great experience and looking forward to our next trip!

Not Family Friendly!! Buyer Beware!!

My family was desperately looking for a relaxing beach getaway with our 2 kids aged 6 and 8 years old. The wild horses was what drew us to this region of the OBX, but from our experience even a pasture full of wild horses grazing is not enough to get us to endure this awful trek! Stay away if you have children! Not family friendly!! Cars are speeding by you on both sides as you are lounging on the beach. It feels like your children are playing Frogger! Highly dangerous, not relaxing! Despite what the property owner claims, you need to have a 4x4 4 Wheel Drive vehicle such as a Ford Pickup truck or a Jeep, you CANNOT traverse the 17 miles of sand and dunes it requires to get to this beach house. People were getting stuck in the sand all around us. It was like getting stuck in a snow storm and everyone was spinning out. We have an All-wheel drive AWD vehicle and we still got stuck. Kind strangers had to help dig us out and push our car. It was a tense, white knuckle drive. Not the relaxing scenic drive we were hoping for. Despite what was communicated with us in our correspondence, it does NOT take 20 minutes to get to the nearest grocery store! It’s actually an 1 hour to drive to the nearest grocery store!! Yes, 2 hour round trip for eggs and milk. When we were told the Tim Buck 2 shopping plaza was just 20-30 minutes away. The house is 17 miles off the main road, you are only permitted to drive 15mph, so yes it takes over 1 hour to drive the 4x4 section without traffic. And add some more minutes from the stretch on main road. Basic simple math. I wish I had known this, would never have booked if I had known this! By the time we finally arrived, my kids were crying and exhausted and hungry! That’s when we discovered the AC was not working, for some reason it was always 10 degrees hotter inside the house than outside. On the 3rd day they finally came to fix it. To make things worse, the Wi-Fi did not work! My husband and I could not work remotely like we had hoped and intended to. Slower than AOL dial up from the 1990s. Unless you are intentionally looking to disconnect and unplug during your vacation. I highly suggest booking on the main area of OBX with access to food, internet, and paved roads. It feels like The Moneypit of beach vacations, one calamity after the other! I will never book through VRBO again. Airbnb.com actually offers renters protection and recourse! Not the family vacation we were dreaming of!

Nice home in Carova

Overall nice place near the Sound in Carova. We visited after a week of rain and the roads were not great, however doable with 4x4. The house is nice and has plenty of space as provided in the description. Top floor where family area/kitchen has some great views along with a deck overlooking the sound. We were expecting to use the hot tub during our stay but unfortunately out of service for our stay.

Great family vacation rental

We have vacation in OBX and specifically Carova for many years but this was our first time on the sound. In addition, to the kayaks available with the home we brought additional from home resulting in multiple pleasant evening and morning rides for the family. The layout of the home is very functional and worked well with differing gathering places for teenagers and adults. We also saw horses more often and up closer than we did when staying in oceanfront homes. Thank you for a great vacation!

Best vacation yet

There are no better beach days than the ones on Carova beach and then coming back to such a beautifully maintained, spacious home makes it that much better. My family of five (plus our dog) look forward to this vacation every year and we are never disappointed by the home or it’s beautiful quiet location. It’s really a special place! 4WD vacation in the OBX

We had never been to the Outer Banks, and had no idea what the 4WD area would actually be like. It’s a long drive in the beach, but once you get settled it’s really great and very convenient. We loved being able to drive our car right into the beach. The house was great, clean and had all the amenities we were looking for. We highly recommend this place!

About the host

Hosted by Michael Owen

Host profile image
Michael and I live in a suburb outside the Philadelphia area. We both work in the health care field. We enjoy hiking, kayaking and beach-combing.

Why they chose this property

We purchased our canal lot in 2004 after visiting friends in Carova Beach. We fell in love with the area and wanted a bit of paradise. We built the home in 2007 to accommodate our family. We have had many gatherings and good times in the home, celebrating, anniversarys, birthdays and graduations.

What makes this property unique

We love the home because it offers the best of both worlds. We are close to the beach to enjoy the surf. We also enjoy the canal and sound. The home is secluded and in a beautiful natural setting.
