About this property

Eastover Manor is a James 19th Century Plantation Home

Eastover was part of a land grant in 1637 from the King of England to Henry Brown. Over the years, land was both acquired and subdivided into different parcels, leaving 283 acres, including the Manor house. Although the Manor house was not Henry Brown's house, it still has been of historical importance to many people. According to one historical record, the Manor house was built in the 1880's.
The Peninsula Baptist Association purchased Eastover in 1972 and is currently owned and operated by The Edge Christian Camp, Inc. Eastover has served as a place of retreat for church groups seeking God's guidance and as a host for organizations conducting summer camps. Our guests enjoy a time of peace and relaxation at the Manor. It has breathtaking views of the James River from a 100-foot elevation, one-half mile of beach and 283 acres of woods, lake, ravine and fields. Depending on what time of year will determine what you may see when you wake in the morning and look out your window. In the spring and summer you may see a baby fawn cuddling with its mama, or smell the fragrance of fresh cut hay in the air. The fall brings beautiful colors all around and glimpses of squirrels storing up for the winter. If your stay is in the winter you may be so blessed as to see a fresh blanket of snow on the ground and cardinals racing about to eat their red berries. You may even spot a Bald Eagle soaring in the blue sky. Whatever time of year you join us, enjoy your coffee overlooking the James River. Then take a hike down to the beach or through the woods.
Be sure and plan a day or two to visit the area plantations, Jamestown and Yorktown Settlements, Busch Gardens Theme Park or enjoy the shops of Williamsburg and Smithfield, home of the famous Smithfield Ham.
Virginia has so much to do and see; you will need more than a week to experience it all.

Perfect for a family gathering

We rented the house as lodging and a central location while family and friends came to town for a local funeral. The house fully suited our needs with plenty of rooms and space for everyone to be together or take time on their own. The view of the river is amazing and we enjoyed sitting out by the fire pit last night. Overall a great experience and we’re already talking about renting it again for a few days this summer.

Beautiful old manor house in an awesome location. Our family enjoyed their visit and the grounds were great for walking and enjoying nature. Only a 6 minute walk from the house to the beach/James River and well worth it!

Perfect for Family Vacation

It's a little off the grid, but as long as you're prepared for drives into town, it's great. No noise from neighbors, and very accommodating staff. My grandparents Adored the building.

Last Minute Change

This was an amazing weekend that we didnt even know we were going to have. This Home was classical. Large enough for 12 people to not even feel crowded at any time. The kids forgot about there phones ipads and games as they wondered around the place along with hiking down to the beach. The Adults were just in awe.

Wonderful respite!

I recommend this property to gather with family and friends and have a relaxing, restful, and spiritual stay. The owners were wonderful and addressed all our needs. The hayride and walks to the beach, along with viewing the bald eagles, were my favorites.

I liked the historic character of the house and the yard and scenery were beautiful. Inside though there were dirty dishes in the cupboards. I can understand hard water stains, but the bathrooms were trending towards filthy. Worst of all, I was reading in bed one night and turned over to find a roach crawling in my bed!!! I recommend a thorough cleaning of this property.

Fun place

Gorgeous property. Love the historic atmosphere. The house is old, which comes with some noises smelly pipes and dirt. Cobwebs and things which could easily be cleaned. But we were comfortable. It is FAR from any grocery stores so bring your food and a LOT of drinking water with you.

Fabulous place to get away and rest!

We had 13 homeschooling mommas end up coming on this trip. The location and home was perfect for us. Even better was the hospitality of the Edge Camp and staff. Lydia answered all of our question leading up to the trip and during our stay. We are already planning two trips back this year! Lydia even came over when she got off work to take a group photo for us! This house and area by far was one of our favorite trips! Thank you for all you did for us and we are looking forward to coming back! Crystal N.

It’s all about family

We loved the space of the house. No tv except dvds. Loved it. Kids had to play. We gave them the Sun porch and they gave lectures at the lectern. Even the shy ones. After a couple of days at Jamestown and Williamsburg the speeches got interesting. We had a scavenger hunt on the property and took family pictures. We were close enough to activities to have fun. We enjoyed everything. The beds were comfortable. House was beautiful.

week end at the Manor House

Plenty of room. Nice location with great view. Downside: Downstairs furnace not working. There were some small heaters in a couple of rooms. Notified property manager of problem and maintance came out. Problem was not solved so manager was called the next day. when we got back they had brought 1 small space heater.. No followup up. no e-mail or any communication. You cannot heat a large down stairs area with single space heater.

A great spring getaway

Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed the views from the property and the undeniable charm of the house. There was plenty of room to spread out, but also cozy rooms in which to gather. It is clear that they take care to prepare for each guest and we even received a phone call a day ahead of time asking if we had any questions. That was a first for me from a VRBO property! The house itself is in need of some TLC and fixing up as it has good bones but requires some upkeep to restore it to its full glory. That is the reason why there were some cleanliness issues - they were just related to things that need repair. The house is fully usable as is and very nice. It just needs a little maintenance to deal with some leaky faucets, wonky window shades and that kind of thing. My family definitely wants to return and looks forward to the possibility of more vacations looking out over the James River!

Eastover is a Wonderful World Unto itself!

Eastover Manor House, at The Edge is not the closest property to Williamsburg or Busch Gardens. But, spending any amount of time away from Eastover while staying there is a wasted opportunity. If there for a week, maybe a day trip to Williamsburg, but I don't know why anyone would want to leave once there. The historic high-ceilinged house is large, very clean, with lots of bathrooms. It dates from after the Civil War, but later, wonderful Colonial Revival paneling , worthy of the finest colonial houses was installed, giving a really elegant feel. As wonderful as the house is, the spectacular view of the James River is even more remarkable. The bluff is over 100 feet high, giving a commanding view for miles. We watched the sunsets every evening looking up river. There is a beach for swimming, paddle boarding etc. below the house. The rest of the extensive grounds are filled with ancient trees, paths and lawns. It is the perfect place to forget the turmoils of the present times, in a separate beautiful world of its own. Enjoy the house, watch the sunsets, gather round the campfire, see ships passing by and step back in time. Eastover is a destination in itself.

Christmas 2021

The house was okay and needs minor renovations inside and out. Our family struggled without Wifi- therefore we had to purchase a hotspot from Verizon to watch TV and get on the computer and cellphones. Some family members decided against staying due to the inability to drink wine anywhere on the property. Biggest debate was Jesus turn water into Wine. It's very isolated and good if you wanna get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. My suggestion would be internet and a smart tv would be good.

Lovely colonial house

If you want to experience the full colonial Williamsburg experience, I highly recommend staying at this home. It is a one of a kind experience and such a lovey house. Our family enjoyed riding the ferry across the river to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. While on the Manner grounds we loved exploring the river front beach and having a hayride. The beds were all very comfortable and there was lots of space within the house. The only draw back for us was that there was only 1 bath tub for bathing the younger children. The listing mentioned having multiple tub shower combos but there is actually only 1.

Worked well for our family

This house was perfect for our family reunion, which consisted of 3 couples and 3 singles. The house is large with lots of little sitting areas. So if someone goes to bed early, or wakes up early, there are rooms you can use without disturbing the sleeping. The kitchen and dining room are large. The dining room table seats 10 which worked for my family, although a few of the chairs were really wobbly. If you have larger group you could sit out on the porch (assuming it's not too cold), or bring one of the many tables into the dining room. I think the porch had 5-6 large circular tables, each fitting 8 or so. So there's plenty of table space. The porch is enclosed although not climate controlled, and it smells a bit musty. Each of the bedrooms was charming and offered good views. I enjoyed my bed, but some of my siblings complained of unevenness. Each bedroom had a bathroom. The four nicest ones had en suites; the fifth one by the kitchen had closeby, but you had to travel a short distance through a kitchen and laundry area. There's another bathroom by the front door, but we avoided it since it would run non-stop after you flushed it. This house is remote. Jamestown is kind of right across the river, but in order to get there you have to drive about 20 minutes and then catch a (free) ferry, which runs every half hour. (In summer, it's every 15 minutes.) There's a bridge further south which you would take if going down toward Norfolk. There's very little in the way of shopping or take out on the west side of the James River, where the house is placed. What was provided in the pantry was hit or miss. We didn't see things like salt, laundry detergent, trash bags (found those the last day), coffee filters. So if you are coming here, be prepared to bring things you might need, or call the office first to see what they have. The house had a lot of rules, noting that they are a Christian organization. I get the no smoking, no drug thing ... but no alcohol? Mind you, I'm not a drinker, but some people enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. I missed the warning in the listing and some family members were put off by it. Just be aware. The lock box is hard to open. I had to call the office to learn the trick. Many of my family members struggled with that. The place could use some maintenance. I hope those things get addressed off season.

USNA Moms' Reunion

We loved the property!! It was not great weather so we didn't venture out on the property much but spent our days touring Williamsburg and Jamestown and then a day in Virginia Beach visiting our young naval aviators. The property was perfect for us and we all have a good sense of history so we greatly appreciated the Manor, it's history and the "feel" of it. We each had our own bedrooms and baths and it was perfect!!

Not as nice as we were expecting

The Manor House at The Edge is listed as near Williamsburg. But that is only after crossing the James River ferry. The picture of the Manor House is impressive, as is the advertisement about it. On first sight it is beautiful, and inside the large living romm, dining room, and bedrooms are all beautiful, with beautiful furniture, with nice hardwood floors and area rugs. For me it was quite disappointing. Foremost, all upholstered furniture, though quite beautiful, is also quite musty. The library has hundreds of books, also musty. If you have any type mold allergy, avoid this place. The kitchen is fully equipped, including a refrigerator with an ice maker which was never connected. The showers heat very quickly, but don't stay hot very long. Then little things. There was rot in the boards at the front of the front porch. A few of the windows have cracked glass. In some the glass is just broken. On cool evenings it would be nice to open windows to air the place out, especially in the event of a power failure. But the windows are the old heavy wood double sash type with window weights held by ropes. Many of the ropes are broken or just missing. Many of the window shades do not work, leaving windows completely dark or completely unshaded. Inside the front door is a fire extinguisher hook, but no fire extinguisher. Outside, much of the wood around the windows has considerable badly peeling paint. There are plastic lawn chairs for sitting around a campfire in back. These are covered with moss or lichen, not at all inviting to sit on. There is a croquet set of mallets, but no balls. There is no wifi, except at the camp office 1/4 mile away. The manor house is on a church camp property, and appears somewhat neglected. It is not a resort area. The advertisement shows a swimming pool, giving the impression the pool is at the house. It is actually a little past the camp office, about a quarter mile away. The camp brochure says to reserve a time up until 9 PM for swimming. At 4PM on an 85 degree August 1 Sunday the pool was closed and locked. My wife and I rented this place for a week to get our family together. I left early. We definitely will not come back.
