About this property

Dramatic Ocean Views. Tidepools. Dog friendly!

Welcome to the Shipwreck House! The Glenesslin, with its proud portrait hanging over the fireplace, came aground on the rocky coastline near Nehalem, Oregon. This home has pieces of the reclaimed wood from the original ship, giving the home its name. With masterful views of the rocks and ocean beyond, it's easy to see what the sailors of yore experienced! The Shipwreck House is just south of the wonderful village of Yachats and offers a unique floor plan for the adventurous. Enter through the front door in to the living area with windows across the west side of the house, a large dining area, kitchen and breakfast nook.

The staircase from the living room goes up to the first of two sleeping areas. This second floor space has two bedrooms and a bath, both with queen beds. The second staircase, next to the kitchen, leads to a wonderful sitting area with expansive views to the north and west, including the lights of Yachats at night. This sitting room includes two sleeper sofas, flat screen television and is next to another bedroom with a king bed and a shared bathroom. Back downstairs on the main level, there is a master suite with views to the south as well as an ensuite bathroom.

The Shipwreck House is just minutes away from Cape Perpetua, Heceta Head Lighthouse, and the wonderful restaurants and art galleries in Yachats. Inside, you can stay entertained with a ping pong table, a shuffleboard and an assortment of board games.

Please note: The access to this home is a gravel road that is a narrow and steep. Please drive slow and carefully!

Sleeps up to 4 – 4 bedrooms, 2 kings (both can be separated in to 2 twin beds - with 72 hour prior notice), 2 queen beds, 3 queen sleeper sofas, 3 baths.

Pre-Thanksgiving at the Shipwreck House

Two families of 4 - 4 seniors with 4 adult 'children' - so having 5 bedrooms (one with a King split into 2 Twins) perfectly accommodated our group. We received excellent support for a slow-to-warm furnace on the night of the 'Bomb Cyclone' - personal delivery of 3 portable heaters in addition to 2 on-site. After the 1st night, all was well with the furnace (a 4-night stay). We had all the kitchen supplies we could have wanted except for measuring cups - only a 1/2 cup measuring cup. It was an awesome venue, with immediate ocean access, and familiar venues / beaches nearby. Great follow-up on the heating issue (text messages - very reassurring). We'd definitely book again.

Toss Up

This house sits on one of the most spectacular points on a famously beautiful coastline. You couldn’t ask for a more scenic location. The downside was this 90 year old house, while full of charm and character, is very beat up. I think the list of deferred maintenance is longer than the list of features.

Sunny Weekend, gorgeous home and view

Incredible home, stocked with everything we needed. Enjoyed the view, crashing waves and sunshine. Our only complaint was that the Air hockey was not working well and the shuffle board needs more sand.

Lovely and inviting

We had a little issue when first attempting to use the key code but the property managers answered right away and helped us navigate the issue. The house was huge and very inviting. We had 4 couples that had all our own privacy. Great experience and will definitely be staying again. The view was just as magestic as the photos depicted.

Perfect getaway!!!

The Ship Wreck House was everything we could have asked for! From the breathtaking views to the uniqueness of the house we had the best time. Everyone had their own space to be able to getaway. The only disappointment was the air hockey table and the shuffle board table both did not work properly.

Quirky and relaxing

Great location! It was somewhat isolated, but still very close to many sights such as Thor's Well, Cape Perpetua, etc. The house was set up so as to allow us to be together when we wanted to be, but gave us the option of having some privacy as needed. The view from the house is amazing! We had a front row seat to many of the oceans moods (stormy, sunny, foggy, clear). It was all we asked for and more. Definitely a "quirky" house. You will never see another just like it!

House needs updating

The views were awesome, but the house really needs some updates. The road to the house has a large pot hole, so be aware. The house is quirky and we never used the downstairs, it was dark and smelled mildewy. Owner should really update the future in the main living room, so you can all enjoy the sunset views.

Family Vacation

We liked the uniqueness of the home however found several things that were not great. Pretty big ant problem in the kitchen, many doors didn't latch closed, windows we were told to close and lock didn't even have a knob to close them let alone lock them. The soaking tub that was in the listing was gone which was pretty disappointing. Electric outlets are in desperate need of updating. The views and agate hunting out front were amazing though!

Shipwreck House

We are amazed by the location, beauty, and the host's warm welcome, which includes a birthday card and two bottles of wine. The ocean views were incredible and the king and the queen beds were very comfortable. Our visit created memories which my family will always treasure. Unfortunately, the house 's maintenance has been deferred. One bedroom had a leak through the ceiling light fixture from which rain water poured and put one of the tall adult guests out of a private bedroom onto a short narrow living room daybed which he didn't appreciate. The host indicated this problem in a note at our check-in. Overall, we cherished out visit in this jewel of a house but we would have made different arrangements, if we had known the home had fewer available private sleeping accommodations.

Everything we could want

Location, location, location. Is near the water, but not too close. Crashing waves, tide pools and enough sand for kids to play. And a great deck too - morning sun on the south side and evening light on the north side. For decades, we (3 families, 3 kids, & a dog) rent someplace different every Holiday season, except now we're coming back here because it's just right for us. The house is older but big, with 2 suites and 3 extra bedrooms, not counting couches and the basement. If you want modern, only the suites will keep you happy, but we enjoyed the wood, big dining room table, giant windows, garage playroom, and large area in the livingroom. The kitchen is small, but well equipped, although the utensil drawers are a bit awkward. The manager offered to give us a personal orientation, and was very responsive by texting. Shortcomings(?) phone reception is questionable at best, and the kids complained that the wifi didn't extend as far as the basement.

Amazing property location and view of ocean

Once you find the property (definitely follow the e-mailed instructions), it is a breathtaking view and pretty much exclusive private beach right in front of the house. Not the easiest to access, but doable. The only problem we had with the house was not only was the stove not working (which they did inform us prior to our stay and provided portable electric burners), but we found that plugging in anything in the kitchen constantly tripped the breaker. It was extremely inconvenient to take the portable stove top burners and plugging one into the garage workbench and the other in the living room. Very hard to cook for a family of 11 when you had to run into the other rooms. Other than that, the house was amazing and we may still come back again if they can fix the electrical issue in the kitchen.

Quirky, rambling beach house

Great, out of the way location with plenty of room -- both private and shared spaces -- and unbeatable views of the constantly crashing surf. A few things should be noted. The kitchen is MINIMALLY stocked -- one pan, no foil, saran wrap, or coffee filters (two coffee pots, though). The front door only stays shut with the deadbolt, which was a little annoying, while the latch from the house to the garage was literally falling out of the door. Two days before our trip, we learned a "maintenance issue" meant we couldn't use one of the bedrooms (the owner/company agreed to a discount to make things right). Other deferred maintenance included burnt out light bulbs and missing or damaged trim around door frames, possibly from forced entry (scuffs and marks around the front door looked like they were made by a crowbar). That aside, the price was reasonable for a February trip (the rental fee SUBSTANTIALLY increases for the summer), and we would gladly rent again.
