About this property

EXPERIENCE AUTHENTIC OLD FLORIDA @ THIS CRACKER COTTAGE; WALK TO DE LEON SPRINGS

If you want to simplify and be inspired by nature this is the place to do it. The old Florida cracker style house was recently renovated and has the "Cross Creek" feeling. If you need to escape the complicated life there is a peace at "Grace Cottage Retreat" where you can return to your inmost being, recharge and glean inspiration to create your book, song or painting. "Grace" is within easy walking distance of De Leon Springs State Park. There is good energy from the springs. Also, there are many other opportunities to cycle, canoe, kayak and hike at various nearby parks. Deland is 7 miles away and offers lots of culture via museums, good food and music. "Grace" is also within an hour's drive to the beach or to Orlando. It's the perfect hub from which one can experience the diversity of Florida. There is one "master" bedroom with a queen bed that comfortably sleeps 2. Then there is a twin bed on the enclosed sleeping porch at the front of the home. Then there is a den with TV and loveseat. A foldout floor mattress is stored in the closet for the occasional 4th guest. There is one bathroom with walkin shower; that being said the home is best suited for a couple or 3 people at the most. "Grace" has a fenced in spacious back yard and is pet friendly. The train runs behind the property so you will occasionally hear the whistle and rumbling. My grandparents lived in a southern railroad town so this is nostalgic and enjoyable to me along with many guests at Grace. There is a front deck and back deck for relaxing outdoors.

Not for us.

Constant traffic traffic noise, dog barking down the street. Neighbors trading substances in front of house. Ongoing rumbling trains in back of property every few hours. No privacy shades in front door windows (able to look through front door window from street into bedroom). TV placed in back room, hottest place in the house. Poor lighting in backyard limiting visibility through much tropical foliage, especially when taking your dog out during dark hours

Wonderful Cottage and Location

This cottage was a gem. My son and I loved sleeping to the souls of the cicadas and waking up with the birds and neighborhood rooster. The property and cottage are beautiful. We walked over to the spring and swam most of our days and hiked in the nearby Lake Woodburn National Wildlife Refuge, where we saw alligators and numerous birds at dusk. I am so glad we found this gem. The neighbors were very friendly too. When I asked if we could buy some eggs from them, they gifted us a dozen. We really loved exploring around De Leon Springs, Deland & Stetson art museums, Earth Hx museum & restaurants, Ormond Beach, snorkeling the local springs, the Reptile Center, and went to Sea World for a day. Catching lizards, orange juice from the backyard tree, slow mornings, chess on the front porch with my sweet 11-year old, ice cream cones in hand, will be a memories I treasure forever. We both loved it!!!

Great place off the beaten track

My wife and I had a great time at Grace Cottage. The cottage is roomy, nicely furnished, comfortable, clean, has a nice vintage/artistic vibe. The large yard was a bonus, also. Rachel was responsive and easy to work with. We visited nearby DeLeon Springs State Park, and found it a beautiful place to swim, walk, and relax. Nearby DeLand to be a great place—lots of fun shops and restaurants. The Stetson Mansion was fantastic, also. Daytona, Ormond, and New Smyrna beaches are approximately 40 minutes away, and easy to get to. We recommend this property, and would definitely stay here again.

Rustic

The cottage was more rustic and antiquated than we anticipated and not for us. The bed was very very hard and can not be moved away from wall. We are in our late 60's, need cpap's and access to both sides of a bed. Didn't realize from description bed could not be moved out from wall/windows at all. Bathroom sink was clogged the first time we used it. It was over a day before anyone came to fix it. Had to leave early to get a good night's rest. If you like rustic, this is for you. Do not recommend it for seniors. No railings on the four front steps. No front porch light. We desire more comfort and modern cottage on our vacations.

Great Place!

We loved our stay at GRACE. However, we can not assign a five star until attention is directed at replacing the bed. It was way too firm and by the third night, we were looking at alternative arrangements, like the floor. Everything else was perfect. Fine sheets and towels, excellent art on the walls, excellent communication between parties, cozy bungalow, wonderfully fenced backyard that two dogs enjoyed to the max. WE LOVED IT but encourage the owner to address the bed issue.

Month of March 2019

We very much enjoyed our stay. The cottage was perfect for our needs. It was in walking distance of beautiful De Leon Springs State Park. Rachel and the neighbors were very helpful with any issues we had. Deland is just a few miles away and offers great dining, shopping and a must do tour of Stetson Mansion. Ormond Beach is gorgeous and within a 40 minute drive. we look forward to staying again. Paul and Sharon

Why they chose this property

"Grace" Cottage took me back to the nostalgia of old Florida. Offering the solace of solitude for the Creative, I knew this retreat setting would feed the souls of her guests. Great Creatives like Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Georgia O'Keefe set themselves apart to be at one with nature. I personally quest to spend time at this charming jewel nestled in De Leon Springs.

What makes this property unique

I love the canopied oaks on the street as well as the plentiful plants and trees on the property. The owner before me was an artist and a nurturer of the land. The home's exterior charm, with old metal roof beckons one to enjoy the sound of the rain from inside. I immediately pictured an easel and a swinging bed on the jalousied front porch and had a sink added. Even though it's a small house it lives big due to the graciously open living/dining & kitchen area. The old hardwood floors have character. There is a woodburning stove in the living room. The bedroom and den with TV are in the back of the house with completely remodeled bath with walk-in shower. There are lovely views of flowers and trees from all of the windows. I added a deck with seating on the front of the house and there is a back deck as well. Because I am a dog lover and traveler I am sensitive to the need for pet friendly accommodations that are enjoyable for the pet owner as well as the pet. The large fenced in back yard makes it easy for guests with pets to relax while knowing that their pets are safe.
