For those seeking more excitement, the Cherokee reservation and casino are just a 20-minute drive away.

The kitchen features modern amenities including a refrigerator with ice dispenser and K-Cup coffee maker, along with a traditional drip coffee maker. Complimentary paper products, trash bags, and kitchen and laundry detergents are provided for your convenience.

During cooler evenings, you can burn manufactured firelogs in the fireplace or if you enjoy burning real wood, there is an outdoor firepit perfect for roasting marshmallows.

The Bear Den Upscale Cabin is a smoke-free and pet-free home so if you share the owners allergy to pets this is the cabin for you.

Camera Disclosure: There is a Snow Cam pointing away from the property to overlook the road for checking winter conditions. Additionally, a Ring Doorbell is installed on the exterior door near the driveway, focusing solely on the driveway area.

Winter Snow: The Bear Den is conveniently located near Highway 19, making it an easy drive—except during snowy conditions. In the event of snow, you will need to park your vehicle near Highway 19, where a streetlight provides illumination. From there, it’s a short walk (approximately the length of a football field) to the Bear Den. Please note that this may not be a suitable option for guests with mobility challenges or disabilities. While the state Highway Department maintains Highway 19 with 24/7 snow removal, secondary roads in Haywood County, including Skyway Drive do not receive snow removal services.

Perfect for Us

This is our second stay and it was just as great as the first. The cabin was perfect for our needs. The cabin is not too far up the mountain and has a fabulous view. Quick in and out and close to everything we love about the area. The hummingbirds were a treat! There were no elk this time but we still have the memories of the babies we saw during the first stay.

Quite the adventure

We love staying here!! We came up this trip to celebrate my husband’s 65th birthday & it will be one to remember - Hurricane Helene!! The valley protected us & we never lost power or use of water. Our host stayed in contact with us up until we lost cell coverage & was back with us once our service was restored - thank you Mr. Rucker !!!

Thanksgiving in the Mountains

This property was perfect for two of us to get away for Thanksgiving. House was decorated for Christmas and was very nicely furnished. It was close to Maggie Valley and a short drive to Waynesville. We will stay again if we are traveling alone.

Awesome

We have stayed at this lovely home for several years. It is very comfortable and spotless. This year we had a female elk and her baby come up the driveway and snack on the tree outside the kitchen window. We love staying here every year.

Getaway!

We loved this place. It was clean, well stocked, comfortable seating and comfortable master mattress. (We didn't use 2nd bedroom). The location is convenient to so many places. We hiked to waterfalls, saw elk at Cherokee and rode the train in Bryson City. Sitting on the deck was lovely with hummingbirds visiting all the time and beautiful view of the mountains. There is some noise as it is not far from the main road, but it didn't bother us at all. The host was great and we would definitely come again!

Excellent Place

The view was amazing. The house was pristine clean and very adequately supplied. First time I have stayed at a VRBO and not had to go buy paper towels. The owner gave detailed instructions about the security system, tv, etc. The owner also made a lot of recommendations of places to eat. We will definitely be back.

Perfect!!!

We were hoping for rest & relaxation & we were not disappointed - we are an older couple & this place was perfect for us!! We really enjoyed our morning coffee on the porch swing, afternoons relaxing in the hot tub & evening meals outside by the fire pit. We had plenty of entertainment with watching all the hummingbirds & an occasional visit by the elk. We loved this place & hope to return again soon!! Don is an amazing host!!!

Peaceful View

This home/spot was one of our favorites! We have stayed in many VRBO rentals and by far this was one of the best. Home was very clean and best bed ever for a rental. We enjoyed the area and will definitely be back. Don was a very gracious host. Check in with us through email to make sure all was well and asked us to reach out if we needed anything. Would give 10 stars if it was available!

Motorcycle noise all day, every day. Beds uncomfortable. I was looking forward to a nice quiet get away but found out to late that the property was to close to the main road thru Maggie Valley. The property was well kept and furnished well. I booked for a week but left a day early due to noise and beds.

Hummingbirds and mountain views

This whole transaction went exceptionably well from beginning to end. Don the owner, is great to work with as he answers your questions immediately and doesn't keep you waiting for answers. The home is very nice. The hot tub is clean and inviting. I found myself very relaxed during our stay. There are two hummingbird feeders on the back porch and a family of at least six different birds continuously visiting even when I was inches from the feeder. The home is well stocked and we found everything in great working order. We intend to return next year.

Super clean and nice

Excellent property. So clean. Easy to get in and out of town. Beautiful view from the porch. Hot tub is wonderful and has a deck built up that it sits down in so it's a matter of just sitting down and swinging your feet over. Perfect for anyone with back issues. Easy steps in the door but if you find those 3 too difficult you can go around the side and use the steps by the hot tub which are even shallower. Covered deck with porch swing was great. Hummingbirds were fun to watch. Don is very easy to work with. We'll be back! Thank you.

Lovely little place!

We first stayed at The Bear Den last October. It was the perfect place to come back to after a long day of hiking. The hot tub, the recliners, and the fireplace all contributed to making it cozy and relaxing especially when we were sore and worn out 🙃. Great view out the back, and we even saw several elk walk right up the driveway! The bed was also quite comfortable. The best part though is that Don is a great host who goes out of his way to be helpful—we found this out when we decided to extend a vacation this winter by coming back to Maggie Valley after spending a week in Banner Elk. On short notice Don went above and beyond to accommodate us and it really capped off our trip on a high note. The location is great as well, only about 5 minutes away from Joey’s Pancake House in one direction (get there early in peak season, though not nearly as busy in winter), and the Blue Ridge Parkway in the other (both directions were closed for the winter but it was open right at the junction where you can access one trailhead). One thing to be aware of is that Google Maps doesn’t think you can turn left from the main road onto the drive—it will try to send you on a weird double-back-and-around route but we soon learned that it’s easier to ignore that and turn left (if you have a very large SUV it might be hard to make the turn, but for reference a Kia Sportage did just fine).

Cozy Mountain Getaway

This property was exactly as expected from the pictures and description on line. My husband and I were looking to getaway Thanksgiving week and the location on this home was perfect to explore Maggie Valley and the surrounding areas. Communication with Don was very easy and he gave us some great restaurant suggestions. His home is comfy and homey! We had a real treat (twice) of seeing Elk walking across the property below us. There was no need to go searching for them.

Awesome

We have stayed at this awesome property many times. It's very comfortable and cozy. We love having our morning coffee on the porch and looking at the leaves and mountains. It's just a short drive into downtown Maggie Valley and Waynesville. We saw so many families of Elk this year, they walked right down the road in front of the house. Beautiful animals.

About the host

Hosted by Don Rucker

Host profile image
We live in Summerville, South Carolina and we have visted Maggie Valley since the 80's and we purchased our Maggie Valley Vacation home in 2007. We rent our home on VRBO only so other folks can enjoy what we enjoy and we put 100% of all rental income back into keeping the house up to date. Our goal is to provide a vacation home that is well furnished and comfortable to visit.

Why they chose this property

Terri and I wanted an incredible view without having to drive up a long mountain road to enjoy it. We also wanted a place with enough land so we could enjoy our yard and porch without being distracted by the neighbors and our Mountain Community provides just the right amount of privacy. We also ride a Harley Davidson so having a paved access road is very important to us.

What makes this property unique

Soco Mountain View!! Conveniently located near the Blue Ridge Parkway and the National Park.
