Great fall getaway

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the house nicely accommodated multiple families and generations. Communication with the owners and property manager was great, including some flexibility on our move-out time when we had to deal with a flat tire! The only possible flaw was that the open floor plan, high ceilings, and wood floors made for some echo in the main living room area, which made it just a little more difficult to converse. Overall, the space served us well!

Friendly Gathering

The house was very clean and well kept. Everyone enjoyed their stay at the house, with various areas to relax. Only a few minor suggestions would be some towel or clothing hooks on the door or the walls in the small bathrooms for showering purposes. Also consider most rentals allow access at 4:00 p.m. as part of their normal rental time frame, and this allows the guests to enter and have time to prepare a larger dinner meal. Overall stay at the home was excellent.

Had a great weekend

View of lake is awesome!! Bedrooms were plentiful just not super big. Worked well for our group though. Location was great for wine/cider touring. House was clean. Kitchen was well supplied. Only negative thing was all of the signs through out the house with the rules. I understand you don’t want people trashing the unit but a folder placed in the unit stating the rules would be a better choice. Just the general consensus of our group. Would recommend renting this property

Nice lake home, well appointed with gaming area for kids

Overall the home is very nice with a great lake view from the large family room/kitchen area. Our group enjoyed the interior space including the table tennis and pool table. The neighborhood includes an odd mix of vacation properties and locals that don't seem to appreciate the vacationers being around. Overall we didn't have any issues though. There are a lot of rules and warnings about potential fines posted throughout the home (relative to other rentals we've stayed at), as well as very specific check-out requirements, which make it a bit uncomfortable and hard to relax at times. It would be nice to get the entry instructions a little ahead of the check-in time, we had a brief stressful moment as we were almost to the home and still didn't know how we would get in. The property manager was responsive to inquires though, and overall I would recommend the home in the summer if you're looking for a lakefront property with plenty of space.

Wonderful vacation home on lake side setting

I booked Sunset Shores last October for a family vacation with 13 family members for the majority of the week. The layout of BD/BA was perfect for us. The dining area let us all be together for dinners and games. The house was fully stocked- Hairdryers, shampoo/conditioner, body wash in each bath. My niece brought her crockpot & didn't need to, one was in a cupboard! We used the fire pit a few times to gather around, chat and roast marshmallows for s’mores. This home was best for privacy from the other homes. The lawn was a great place to play cornhole, etc We did utilize the canoe to go around the lake. A few of us enjoyed morning walks down the roads which are fairly traffic free. The weather turned fall like with mid-70’s day to mid-50’s at night for 5 days, so was able to turn the A/C off and open windows to enjoy the cool breezes. Easy access from small sandy beach into lake water, it was warm and shallow quite aways out, tho’ there is grass-like growth a little bit out. The fencing that was up seems to keep any geese out, plus a person came a couple times our week to clean up any geese droppings etc. I want to thank Elizabeth, booking host, who answered my many questions about the property prior to booking and prior to coming. Also, thanks to Tracy, on-site manager, who was gracious & helpful to us from arrival thru departure. She sent over guys a to repair toilet after second day there. She always texted back immediately on all questions. Thx from OR/OH/VA families!

Wonderful home & location

This home & view is spectacular! The view of the lake is something to see from inside the house, out in the back yard or on the dock. One morning we went out to see 2 swans on the lake close to the home. When you pull into the driveway do not be deceived. It looks small but wait until you get to the side of the house or go inside. All the bedrooms were comfortable with enough room to accommodate a large group. Everything we needed was there for us from the kitchen supplies to books & board games. We had a 13 year old in our group who really enjoyed the pool & ping pong tables. If we're ever in the area again we hope this property is available. Loved it!

Wonderful Peaceful Location

My siblings and I reserved this home for a surprise for our parents birthdays. The 7 bedrooms and 4 baths were awesome to accommodate 14 of us, 11 adults and 3 kids. The kitchen had everything we needed to make our large-scale meals. There were plenty of places for small groups to hangout as well as the big dining table where we could all sit and enjoy our meals together. There was a lot of competition with the ping pong and pool tables. The lake was quiet and we were able to do some fishing from the dock. We enjoyed our stay and would stay there again in the future.

GET READY FOR A BIG DISSAPOINTMENT

We picked this house for three things, Pool Table, Ping Pong Table and Fire Pit. It was 60 miles from our Snowmobile Tour Destination and we chose it despite the hefty price for the amenities we didn’t get to enjoy. Forget an evenly heated home: The Heat: It was the dead of winter when we arrived at the property and the owner keeps it at 62 degrees cold. The property takes about 8-10 hours if not more to come to a tolerable temperature of 70 degrees. The main dining hall kitchen and entertainment area never reaches the desired temperature at all and the house has multiple climates. I had a space heater in my car which saved our stay and I left it there for all of you who find that the house is not meant for winter getaways. The rooms that have vents directly above the beds get extremely hot at night. Forget Decent Towels, Clean Table Clothes or pots and pans. Towels were gym quality and as used as gym towels appear. Table cloth on dining room table dirty. Pots and pans sticky and grimy. Tea Pot full of nuts and bolts. Forget playing pool or ping pong. There is not enough adequate room for either game in the space the tables are located. The tables themselves and equipment provided for play is of poor quality and is old. Forget the Fire Pit: 1. If its winter and there is snow, YOU WILL BE SHOVELING THREE FOOT OF SNOW ABOUT 15 YARDS OF IT AND DIGGING OUT THE FIRE PIT YOURSELF IF YOU WANT TO USE IT. They provide one shovel, so forget about speed. You will be asked to get a fire permit, but not informed of the township the property is in. Forget using the deck: Unless you feel like shoveling. Forget privacy: The landlord has cameras on the front and back of the home and on the day of checkout a lady came by and was peeking into our windows before check-out time. Forget Hospitality: If you want to check-in early. It' $50 per hour per the owner. Late Check-Out: If your running late every 15 minutes will cost you $50 per the owner and $25 per the VRBO rule book. The atti of the owner: Rude, Obnoxious and very unfriendly. Day of Check out: At 11 a.m. the day of check out, either the landlord or her staff showed up at the property and started to bang on the door as if they were the FBI. When I opened the door and let the lady know that we are packing our stuff and would probably need an extra hour, and stated that we had called the number on the fridge to inform them, she got fussy and questioned who did I call and then proceeded

Halloween getaway

It's a perfect property for a family getaway weekend/ vacation. Any and every minor inconvenience it question we had was responded to or taken care of promptly. The biggest downside was that there isn't strong enough connection to the internet for a group of people that are constantly on their devices. Which is likely more a feature of location than the property itself

A Great Lakeside Getaway

Six friends from high school (MANY years later), we came to Sunset Shores for a few days of time together catching up, relaxing, and reminiscing. This house fit our needs perfectly. The glass wall toward the lake gave us a great view even though the weather was nippy. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, dishes and condiments. There were enough bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone to have space and privacy. Seating and dining areas were ample for a group twice our size. Instructions were plentiful and answered any questions we might have had. When the guys with leaf blowers came at 8:30 in the morning we were glad we were getting up anyway to pack and leave, because it was very noisy right outside the windows, but that would be our only complaint. (They were nice guys who took a group photo for us, however.) The house was sparkling clean when we arrived. Check-in/out was a breeze. We would definitely return to this house.

Great place for family getaway

Sunset Shores was the perfect size house and location for our family. The experience from start to finish in booking the property was very easy. The lakeside location was a beautiful setting and was great for our son-in-laws to fish with their children. The younger ones enjoyed the sandy area to play in! The only deterrent were the geese making a mess in the back yard but that’s lake life! We ventured out almost every day to several other locations outside of Pullman along Lake Michigan and were able to get to most places in less than 45 minutes. Our family had a wonderful week at Sunset Shores. Thank you, Elizabeth!

About the host

Hosted by Elizabeth Kosten

Host profile image
I love helping people find the perfect vacation rental for their needs, and I've been managing this growing group of homes in southwest Michigan since 2011. As a lover of the water and of all the natural beauty that Michigan has in abundance, I hope that the folks who stay in our homes will come to appreciate the area as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

The owners fell in love with southwest Michigan on a trip to visit friends in South Haven nearly 15 years ago. As Chicago natives, they were immediately enchanted by the serene atmosphere and natural beauty — not to mention the extensive outdoor activities. Since then, they have embraced the tradition of spending holidays and summer weekends in the area, and it was only a matter of time before they decided to find a vacation home of their own.

By a stroke of luck, they discovered their first gorgeous property on Upper Scott Lake in Lee Township over ten years ago. They began renting out the cottage there out of a desire to share their wonderful experiences with others. Now that they are hosting six additional rental properties, they can truly offer up a simple countryside alternative to busy city life.

What makes this property unique

The Upper Scott Lakefront and nearby Lee Township, MI, are part of a quiet community where many vacationers return year after year to enjoy the lovely seasonal changes, as well as fishing, cycling, water sports, and golf. Sunset Shores Lake House is one of just a few luxury vacation homes gathered on the shores of Upper Scott Lake, giving the area a quiet and close-knit feel. The dazzling sunsets and stunning lake view make for a nature-lover's dream!
