CLIMATE:
The climate at Creekside Cottage is perfect year round. Situated at 900 feet elevation, the air is cooler than at the beach or in Hilo: upper 70's F to low 80's during the day, and upper 60's F to low 70’s at night most of the year. In the winter it can get down to the low 60's at night with a daytime high in the low to mid-70's.

OFF-THE-GRID LIVING & LUXURIES:
The property is very rural which means you can use this time to truly unplug, but we do have options available should you choose to stay connected. We do not have a landline phone, but most cell phone carriers work pretty well in the area. Cable TV is not available in our neighborhood, but we have high speed cable fiber Internet and streaming TV.

Water is provided from Hawaiian rainwater purified by filtration and UV light. Propane tanks supply the gas for the stove, hot water heater and dryer. Like most homes in Hawaii, there is no air conditioning or heat on the property, but the home’s temperature can be regulated through the many windows which catch the cool ocean breezes. It rarely gets hot at this elevation, and the nights always cool down to 70 or below. If heat and humidity are a problem for you or your guests, you may wish to rent an air-conditioned hotel room.

ABOUT KAPEHU FALLS PROPERTY
You'll have the cottage to yourselves. You'll share the 20 acres with the guests of our other vacation rental, but there is little chance you'll see or hear them: the Kapehu Retreat House is about 1/4 of a mile away on the other side of a creek and ravine. You have access to the fruit trees (oranges, lemons, limes, figs, 3 varieties of bananas, lilikoi, and two varieties of avocados, including the huge "butter" avocados). You'll also have access to the path down to the waterfall and the swimming hole below the waterfall in the Kapehu Stream.

Perfection

This property was absolute heaven. A perfect getaway from O’ahu which is very busy, full of people and traffic. The peaceful, serene calmness of this beautiful property was exactly what I needed. The cottage has everything needed, was immaculately clean and well appointed. I cannot describe this sufficiently; book your stay and find out for yourself. Fantastic and thorough communication with owner and manager. Also, mahalo nui for the history of the kanaka maoli who were original owners of the land. Big Island is so rich in history of The Kingdom of Hawai’i and it was wonderful to see that included at the property. As a native Hawaiian, that inclusion meant a great deal to me. I hope to visit again soon.

Very special and peaceful

The Kapehu Falls Creekside Cottage is a special place that we felt grateful to have access to. I weeded through bunches of short term rentals, was excited to book this one, and upon arrival, the photos came to life before my eyes. The entire property is so well-kept, the cottage is a beautiful home with high ceilings, tons of windows and light, multiple places to hang out/spend time, and many details thought through for your stay, from umbrellas left by the door to the yoga mat in the closet. All the windows and breezes made it feel like outdoor living, safely tucked away from mosquitos (which weren’t horrible, but hey, it’s Hilo-side which means anywhere comes with some mosquitoes). We loved gazing at the grounds, forest, and ocean in the distance. We could hear the adjacent stream and the waterfall pool (along the other stream on the property) felt like a dream! When the clouds clear, the views of the stars are incredible. We “worked from home” while there and didn’t have any trouble with the internet. The kitchen was pretty well-equipped. (Someone previously mentioned the cookware needed to be replaced and it seems that was done, as it was in great shape.) Communication both prior and during our stay was top notch, and both Robert and Jack are extremely kind, conscientious, and accommodating. It was such a gorgeous, peaceful, and comfortable stay, on the type of property that many people otherwise wouldn’t have access to experience. Mahalos to Robert and Jack, and I hope we meet again!!!

Amazing views

We loved our short visit at the property. It looks like it is straight out of a fairytale. Perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view. Easy drive to the waterfalls. We used it as a home base to see “the other side of the island”.

Beautiful property

We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful property but didn't get to take advantage of the grounds during our stay. The weather just was not on our side but we came to understand what they mean by the rainy side of the island! Listening to the rain on the metal roof was an experience I won't soon forget. It was a short drive to Hilo and Akaka Falls. We also enjoyed driving down to Pāhoa and driving along the red road. Thanks for a great stay.

I would live here forever!

The cottage absolutely exceeded expectations for us! Check in was simple. Check out even easier. Jack (local contact) was not only responsive, but proactive at keeping us informed about travel conditions, weather, or whatever was relevant. The home itself was fantastic! Cozy. Clean. Everything in perfect repair. It is pitch black dark at night and the only sounds you’ll hear are the crickets, frogs and the sound of the stream. The waterfall is exactly as advertised. It’s perfectly sized with a great swimming hole. 10 min or less to Hilo. Maybe 45 min to Waipio Valley. Absolutely no issues with location or convenience. And if you want to go to Kona, just hit the Saddle Road and it won’t take long. I could go on and on. It was amazing. You won’t be disappointed here.

What a gorgeous place. Secluded and private get away. Unfortunately we were there a week if incredible rain but had a great time despite the weather. The cottage was everything promised. Jack was a gracious host and responsive to our needs. The setting is spectacular. We felt like we were in our own secluded hideaway!

Tropical paradise

If you like the bar and party scene, this place is NOT for you! If you are looking for somewhere to get away from it all, look no further. Set back in the hills of east Hawaii, it is very secluded and private. nature abounds. From the lanai, we listened to the symphony of coqui frogs and bugs-n-birds. There is a mongoose who has a little hidey-hole outside left of the dining area. The air is so fresh and smell wonderful. There really is a waterfall with a swimming hole, just be sure to have water shoes because the rock in the swimming hole are slippery. Avocado trees, lemon trees, which we used. Decent wi-fi reception. We didn't attempt to use the ROKU tv, because we like to read or play card games. Very close to Zip-line, Akaka Falls, Honomu Town, Hawaiian Botainical Garden and the ever yummy Low Store. The bed was very comfortable. Kitchen has the basics; gas stove and oven, full size refrigerator, drip coffeee maker, microwave, toaster. You will have to do dishes the old fashioned way. The rain starts every evening around 7, otherwise you have picture perfect days. Washer and dryer are convenient and appreciated. You won't need to bring sunscreen, there are over a dozen left over bottle in the bathroom. Jack the property manager will welcome you when you arrive, and give you a run down of the property. He is easily accessible via text and give you ample notice if he will be on site. Will not only stay here again, but will tell all my friends about it, too.

Best way to see the east side of the big island

We could not believe how beautiful the whole property was when we pulled through the gate - sweeping views of an absolutely massive garden, the ocean off in the distance and all sorts of trees. 15 minutes from Hilo but a million miles away from anything resembling hustle bustle, renting this massive property was the highlight of our two weeks in Hawaii. We can’t wait to come back! The host and manager were fantastic and everything was as adversitied.

Relaxing retreat close to Hilo

My wife and I recently stayed three nights at the Kapehu Cottage. The cottage is even better than described and the property itself made for a quiet, restful setting. The cottage is quite roomy, nicely furnished, fresh and clean. The kitchen is well equipped, sitting area is comfortable and features TV access via Roku (just sign in to your account for your favorite streaming service), the upstairs bedroom features a comfortable bed and stayed cool at night. You'll also have free access to roam the expansive property--we enjoyed walking through the orchard, picking fresh fruit and visiting the falls and swimming pond. Check-in was easy and convenient, as property manager Jack met us at our desired late-evening meeting time. Location is very convenient to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Akaka Falls and Laupahoehoe Point Beach Park. Don't miss a stop at the Low Store for a smoothie! Also just 20 minutes from Hilo, should you want to venture into town. All in all, we totally enjoyed our stay and will not hesitate to return.

Quiet little cottage

My husband and I spent a week here. This is the wet side of the island (making it the more lush side) and we tended to have more overcast and some rain than other parts of the island, it was really a perfect spot to get to anywhere else on the island. The furthest point away was about 1.5-2hrs (one way). The waterfall on the property is lovely and so are the grounds. The waterfall area is a little deeper by the bottom of the falls (but not the river part) so if you have kids or someone who isn’t a swimmer with you, be careful approaching the falls, because you can’t tell the depth if it’s shady. It’s truly a natural pool though. So on hot days, take a swim. They have many “little things” that helped make the stay nicer (beach mats/ beach towels/flashlights/blow dryer/umbrellas, etc). I think the house itself and layout is even nicer than the photos online. It’s very comfortable with lots of seating options. Somethings to be aware of: it is extremely humid in the area and in the house (wet side of island) so store anything that shouldn’t absorb moisture in appropriate containers Ex: the generic salt in cardboard shaker was clumped even with rice in it, we bought a different one in plastic container. My husband’s pills in his pill case got soft, we had a pack of gum that got a little squishy after leaving it on the counter for a day or so. It also got a little chilly at night, but they have several blankets in various places. The humidity goes through the night as well even when it’s colder, though. This factor didn’t ruin anything for us, but I thought it was worth noting. You are also pretty much in the middle of nature, which for me is great, but sometimes nature would chase nature on the roof near sunrise and that can be a little startling if you’re not prepared for it. Overall this place was great and I’d stay here again. :)

About the host

Hosted by Robert Tag

Host profile image
I've worked in the hospitality industry for years on the marketing side and worked shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest general managers and operations professionals in the world. I've had the honor of serving The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd. and their 250+ amazing independent properties. I have also worked with Four Seasons, Fairmont, Mandarin and Intercontinental, as well as some fine cruise lines, sailing vacations and global destinations. It has been a thrill learning from operational geniuses. While I don't pretend to be in that same league, I have always wanted to find a property that defines the best of the area, history and culture that surrounds it and share it with fellow travelers who have the same passion for experiencing a genuine "sense of place." I have found "it" in on the windward side of Hawaii, on the Hamakua Coast just 7 miles north of Hilo. And I would love to share this piece of paradise with people who appreciate authentic experiences.

Why they chose this property

Kapehu Falls is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. (And I've been to some pretty amazing places.) It incorporates the natural beauty of the land, its history as a portion of the old Metcalf Sugar Cane Plantation – and its even earlier history as forest land – and combines it with the stunning design of the fanciful Plantation-era architecture of the late 1800s into a modern-day Hawaiian paradise. The 20+ acre estate has breathtaking ocean views, 15 acres of replanted forest, nearly a mile of private roads, waterfalls, streams, gardens, an orchard, huge main house, storybook creekside cottage and a natural pool beneath the falls. Kinda amazing.

This magical place was created by visionary designer Ronald Hubbard who honored the land, streams and history of the property. And the area. The 2 gorgeous buildings compliment nature's bounty and recall a bygone era. It is like a more sophisticated Hawaiian version of Disney's "Mainstreet USA." And it is all surrounded by famous waterfalls, botanical gardens and other nature-focused attractions scenic byways and trails.

Previous owners and remarkable stewards,Tom and Marcy, spent the better part of a decade transforming this idyllic paradise into a comfortable, reliable vacation rental with plenty of 5-star reviews. They took me under their wing and showed me all the special details that make this such a remarkable vacation retreat. This combination of cultural enthusiasts, and operational and design visionaries made this spectacular property worth sharing.

In the end I asked myself, "Is this place worth flying 20 hours in a middle seat for?" So I tried it. With good company and paradise at the end of the journey, the hours fly by. This place is completely worth your hard-earned vacation time. You can leave the pressures of the real world at the front gate and enjoy life.

What makes this property unique

The majesty of this place is greater than the sum of its parts, and yet the parts are pretty remarkable all by themselves. As fellow travelers and I can attest, there are times when this place is so beautiful that you can just sit on the lanai and watch the ocean and the sky change colors while the birds and butterflies stop by. The choir of songbirds harmonizes with the sounds of the streams and waterfalls to provide a soothing soundtrack to the scenic wonderland. You will forget to get up to explore. But when you do, here's what awaits:

The cottage itself was built by a very talented designer. He used this cottage to get to know the land. It was created as half barn/workshop, half charming cottage with all kinds of rustic touches and contemporary comforts. It is a romantic vision of life in a Hawaiian cottage.

- There are over 20 acres of pristine, gated paradise.
- 15 acres of private eucalyptus forest with private roads.
- Uninterrupted views of the ocean framed by the forest and streams.
- 2 gorgeous streams and waterfalls.
- A picnic shelter past the grove filled with fresh fruit and avocados.
- The larger waterfall has created its own natural pool or swimming hole that looks like it was built for a movie set.
- You feel far from everything, yet you are surrounded by attractions, natural beauty and the conveniences of the Islands largest city. It feels impossible. And yet here is this perfect balance. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a base for a small family to explore the Island.

I hope you'll love it as much as we do! Aloha!
