Description and History:

174 A Saint Philip Street, Unit 3 - The John Bulow House

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter, owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula and a plantation south of Charleston along Rantowles creek.

Constructed in 1922, this Victorian building, now known as 174 A, showcases exquisite ornate  trim, expansive porches, bay windows, gabled standing seam roof, and exterior vibrant exterior color. The high ceilings and large windows allow ample natural light to flood the spacious interiors.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. This is the real deal!

Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is an award-winning collection of historic buildings with 17 charming rentals. Each unit offers unique features honoring the particular character of that unit. There are no cookie-cutter units, yet we’ve retained the highest standards of Saint Philip Square in design, materials, furnishings and onsite management. The grounds feature 5 individual outdoor gardens with fountains, dining areas, fire pits and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.

This protected sanctuary is remarkably accessible to the vibrant King Street scene. Be sure to study the area map to appreciate our prized location. You’re as close as it gets to King Street.

Great place!

We just spent a long weekend here and had a wonderful time. It was clean and perfectly suited to our group of five cousins. The location is great for shopping and dining. Jamie was very responsive leading up to our visit and while there, we didn’t need a thing. Great place!

Fun weekend in Charleston

The location of the property was great one block down from King Street on a quiet street. We were able to walk everywhere. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Jamie was great to deal with. We planned the trip around the Charleston 1/2 marathon which was cancelled (due to snow/ice) but we still had fun in Charleston, shopping and trying different restaurants all convenient to the property.

Charleston Vacation

Kitchen was too small, no dining room, the walls I think are made of paper we could hear all of the neighbors just talking. Definitely wouldn't stay there again. One nice bathroom the other bathroom was some kind of a concocted showebathroom.

Beautiful house, great location

We rented this house while in town for our daughter’s wedding. It is bright, clean, well-appointed and the most comfortable beds. The property manager Jamie was so nice and accommodating. Highly recommend. Street noise on a Saturday night was significant so bring earplugs.

Sunny property in excellent location

We enjoyed our stay in this sunny 3 bedroom property. King and queen beds were a plus. Kitchen is galley style, but big enough if you’re mostly eating out as we were. Second bathroom makes creative use of a narrow space but using shower there comes with downsides (e.g. floor wet for a few hours despite good ventilation). Patio is lovely and courtyard seating area is also a plus. Parking is plentiful and easy. Location is excellent for accessing King Street shops and restaurants, and the Market, waterfront, etc are about 20 min walk or short car ride away. We would definitely stay here again.

Fun time

Great property. Good location to King Street and places to eat. Unit very comfortable and cute. Water pressure low and kitchen could use a little more if you are doing any serious cooking. Refrigerator doors not being able to open needs to be addressed. But overall a great place to rent.

Charleston Girls Trip

Perfect location and VRBO for girls trips. Plenty of room for five of us. Kitchen was a great set up for everything we needed. Loved sitting on porch in morning and drinking my coffee. Easy walk to King street. Did some Ubers because of heat. Wish we would have realized sooner there was free bus transportation and a stop very near our place. Amazing restaurants and shopping. Great trip. Will return. Jamie was a great communicator and very helpful.

AMAZING PLACE TO STAY

We can't put into words how wonderful our stay was at this property. We came in from out of town for our wedding and booked two of these houses for our bridal party and close friends traveling from out of town. Jamie and the owners were incredible through the whole booking process as the properties were getting renovated. The inside is absolutely stunning. The bedrooms feel like you're staying in a 5-star suite! The location is very convenient to downtown and to king street. It's about a 30 minute walk to the water/rainbow row and 15 to market. King street is right there. I would HIGHLY recommend booking this property for your next stay in Charleston :) We can't say enough positive things. And all you brides - you cannot pick a more adorable setting for photos if you are looking for a place for first look and getting ready!
