About this property

Gorgeous, HUGE 5 bedroms, 3.5 bath, 4000 Sq ft Sunlit Beauty, Downtown

We invite you to enjoy the Port City from the comfort of this beautiful, 4000 square foot home, perfectly situated amid the peaceful, tree-lined residential streets of historic downtown Wilmington. The Magnolia House is located in historic downtown Wilmington just 15 blocks from the river. We are close to The Brooklyn Arts Center, several downtown coffee houses and art galleries, horse-drawn carriage rides, the Cotton Exchange, Screen Gems Studio, haunted pub crawls, the BEACH, golf, and acclaimed restaurants and shopping. Located in Carolina Heights, the Magnolia House is in an excellent location- just a 15 minute walk to the bustling riverfront, a 20 minute drive to the beach!. All linen, towels, kitchen items (service for 12) are included so you just need to pack your suitcase and make yourself at home!

The Magnolia House is a gathering place for families celebrating milestones, or vacationing together and seeking quiet refuge after a day of sightseeing. This beautiful historic property is a delight! Every room is bathed in sunlight with huge windows, many facing the large garden in the backyard with its old magnolia tree, and pathway leading down three steps to a lower formal garden, Camelia trees and Azaleas.

The house, built in 1921, is filled with original details including 10-foot ceilings, a wide brick path, the old call buttons used in the 1920's. There are 3 fireplaces (one functional) with large decorative mantels. The house has been included in the Wilmington Historic Foundation's Historic Home Tour and has also been used as a location for several TV series and commercials..

Our guests tell us that they love the chef’s kitchen with its stainless steel countertops and three sinks. Cooking for a large group is a pleasure in this well equipped and spacious kitchen. There is seating for 6 around the kitchen island for informal meals. The formal dining room seats 10-12 people comfortably for formal meals and holiday dinners.

The den is a comfortable retreat with a large sectional, built-in bookshelves with books to read and a 42-inch flat screen HDTV which allows you to wirelessly stream movies and TV shows and surf the Web. There is also game table seating six that opens for an impromptu poker night! The shelves are stocked with puzzles and all the best board games for a fun evening in with the family. There is an XBOX to keep the kids (and maybe even a few adults) entertained with wireless remote controls and several games. Bring your games along with you if you have a favorite!

The den also has a doggy door out to the fenced yard.

There is also a formal living room with ample seating that is perfect for entertaining guests or simply enjoying a cocktail by the fireplace on a winter night.

There are 5 large bedrooms (all located upstairs) with the following configurations:
Bedroom 1: Master bedroom: One King sized bed (with flat screen tv)
Bedroom 2: One Queen sized bed (with flat screen tv)
Bedroom 3: Second Master Bedroom-One King sized bed (with flat screen tv)
Bedroom 4 : One Full sized bed
Bedroom 5: Two twin sized beds and one full sized bed -OR can be configured as ONE full sized bed and ONE King sized bed--(This room connects to the master bedroom with solid wood french doors, so if you would like the doors open or closed, you have a choice. When the doors are closed, there is complete privacy, and the bedrooms are completely separate. if left open, the two rooms are connected and ideal for parents with very young children or infants.)

There is also a queen sized sleeper sofa in the living room downstairs, which can be set up for guests who cannot walk up the stairs with ease.

There are three full bathrooms with deep, oversized tubs located upstairs, and there is a half bath (no tub or shower) downstairs.

*Please note that all full bathrooms are located upstairs. There is a half bathroom (no bathtub) located downstairs near the sleeper sofa. The house is not handicap accessible.

The bathrooms have original fixtures and floor tiles to preserve the beauty and integrity of this historic home. This is not new construction. There may be a creaky floorboard, a dripping faucet here and there, but it is all original to this home built in 1921.

Pets will be considered on an individual basis, so please inquire before booking the house. We are generally a pet-friendly home! There is even a pet door to the fenced backyard. If your pet is authorized, you must sign a pet agreement. Your pet MUST BE on flea control to be considered. Pets are not allowed on furniture, including beds.

Enjoy the peaceful backyard and watch the kids play on the swing set (there is an infant seat, too) and slide while you grill outdoors on the gas grill.

We have a pack 'n play, stroller, and high chair for infants. There are also many puzzles and books and a few toys for children to keep them happy during your stay.

**Please also note that we do not authorize the use of the home for large, noisy parties. You may have a small event for the number of guests staying with you. This is a residential neighborhood and we are respectful of our neighbors' right to a quiet and peaceful environment.

Throughout the year, the Magnolia House offers the comforts of home in the wonderful Port City! Come and enjoy!

*** Also of note--Our property has a B&B license and this B&B is a modern take on the way people travel. With an on-site manager who resides on the property, you will still feel as though you are completely alone and have complete privacy. Our manager, Katie, lives in a separate unit on the grounds. She has a separate entrance to the yard and is available only to the extent that you wish her to be. We offer keyless entry to the house so you don’t even have to meet anyone, but Katie is available for any emergencies during your stay. Need to find a flashlight? Katie can be there to show you where it is! But, if you desire privacy and the feeling that you are home without having to say "hello" to anyone, you can have that as well. We can also provide grocery shopping service prior to your stay and have the refrigerator stocked with all your favorite items and provide you with the receipt (hourly rate applies for shopping service). Welcome to the modern B&B in the historic neighborhood!

Downtown beauty

This house truly is beautiful. It has plenty of room for larger groups looking to stay or even a small group. It is very reasonably priced for the 4000 square feet it offers. It is a 3 minute drive or Uber to the river walk and shops and restaurants. The property manager was very helpful and accessible. We had debated a beach house but I’m glad we chose this place. Very cool and clean colonial style home. Highly recommend staying here if you are looking to be close to everything Wilmington has to offer!

Graduation Weekend

We reserved this home because we were hosting family and friends for the weekend. Our daughter graduated college, and we needed a good-sized home to host out-of-town family and a dinner party. Everybody loved it. We had chefs prepare dinner. The kitchen was perfect for them—plenty of space with three sinks. This is a historical home with "quirks," as most do have. Made it fun though!

A fun time with friends

We gathered in Wilmington to spend time with friends that we all made back in the 70s in Charlotte. We try to get together annually and this year we chose Wilmington because one of the couples now lives Wilmington. Staying in this house was great for 9 of the folks in our group. This house was very clean. The beds were comfortable and the living areas, two of them, were large and lots of furniture to sit on and visit with our friends.

Family Reunion

The home was beautiful inside and out. We arrived a little early as i notified Katie, she was fantastic as we was allowed to enter 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled time. The home had plenty of room for my family to be close, but, not crowded. We enjoyed the quiet sound of the neighborhood and loved the large magnolia tree in the back yard. We visited the riverwalk and the USS North Carolina as i revisit my 1st Duty station (Camp Lejeune) The owner made herself readily available should anything come about. My family really Loved the home, location, and ease to parking Do yourself a favor and schedule and schedule a stay or vacay here you wont reget it. Thank you Katie.

Roomy and Beautiful

The house was as described by the owner so that our entire large family was quite comfortable. the neighborhood was in a very quiet suburb and welcoming. The backyard was big enough that all the grandkids could run, jump, climb a big tree. Everyone had a big bedroom with access to a private bath. We would definitely come back and recommend for a large family/group. Manger and owners responded promptly to any questions or concerns we had. A very pleasant experience and vacation was had by the whole family(8 adults and 4 kiddos).

Really comfortable place!

Our family (10 adults) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Magnolia House while visiting Wilmington for my nieces wedding. The host was attentive to all questions and requests to include arranging an early check-in which was definitely appreciated! The location seemed central to going everyplace in the area. We found the house to be spacious and well equipped. In summary, we highly recommend this VRBO home.

Beautiful, historic home

We arrived for 3 nights to celebrate my daughter’s college graduation. There were 8 of us staying in this home. There was more than enough space! We had extra beds too! The downstairs had plenty of space to gather and socialize. The backyard as well! If you need a place to gather with other family or friends staying nearby, this home is perfect! I fell in love with the house immediately. The hardwood floors throughout, the high ceilings, the old/historic feel. The host thought of everything for the kitchen! Even a vase for all of the flowers our daughter received. The host was easy to reach. We arrived a bit early and she was able to let us in the home. ( which was great as I traveling with my 87 year old mother!). The home was clean, the neighbors that I spoke to were kind, and the location is within a mile from the historic district. If I need to return to Wilmington with family again, I will definitely stay here again! Thank you Natalie!

Friends vacation

We loved the place it is older and had some growing pains but did not effect our great time Many things to do in the area for all ages Would say if owner just tweaked a few things home would be gorgeous (water stains on ceilings) the garage next to house had a fire so the bedroom next to it the bedding etc did have a small smell of fire but The kitchen stocked two kinds of coffee pots and French press two refrigerators breakfast in the kitchen Dinner in main dining area All in the family room after events building puzzles many beds and bathrooms Something for everyone My only complaint we did pay a big price tag to stay there and they say in amenities that there’s a grill but if you want to use it they want you to purchase the propane which I thought was crazy had never had to do that at any other place I’ve stayed also first place I’ve stayed with no chance of cancellation. So not a big thing but thought worth mentioning Again big beautiful place great for family or friends vacations

Expensive for the lack of actual amenities

Our overall staff was nice though there were several hiccups. Two of the sinks were broken and the showers were only serviceable at best. One of the toilets was broken and I had to rig it with a wire I order for it to flush. The outdoor grill should be replaced as it is old and worn out. The location was perfect for us and the house fit everyone and that was what mattered the most. It was expensive for the end product but overall we had a good week.

Interesting home

I felt like listing was a bit of bait and switch. The photos of the home were obviously from early 2000’s. The property was unkempt….long grass, dead leaves in backyard. No curbside appeal at all. The home is a diamond in the rough. The history is amazing. Sadly…it has not been kept up and if things are not taken care of I fear it will fall into disrepair. In looking more closely at past reviews I see that things that were problems from 2 years ago have still not been dealt with. Doorknobs that make it difficult to open doors easily, faucets that don’t work properly etc. We saw NO smoke alarms, and home in dire need of handrails. This would be a very difficult home for older folks or those in need of extra support. The home itself was pretty clean ( except for dead cockroaches in bedrooms…ugh)! The wood floors are in sad shape and need refinishing. The furnishings in living room and family room shabby, tattered and dirty. Can you say…a ROCK holding up one end of a couch?! All in all…for the amount it costs to rent ( and NO chance for cancellation after you agree to rent) I would look elsewhere for a home to rent out. Sadly, the owners are making money with no returns to home….it is obviously a business and not a venue for pleasure. I usually look for the good and am positive. I just want others to be aware of what they are walking into. This home would be beautiful with care and concern……Right now….it lacks that. Just read the reviews ( I didn’t research enough) and enter with open eyes to what to expect from this home.

Wonderful old home

Absolutely wonderful. Fit us exactly what we needed. In town for son's wedding. Had my other children and their family with us coming from all over. A few things to point out. It is an older home with old plumbing and old electrical. Don't expect all the newer amenities. The kitchen has everything you need. A couple of changes to what is available. There is a Keurig for coffee as well as a coffee maker but does not take #4 cone filters, standard Mr. Coffee filters are fine. The manager and owner are very responsive to requests. When arrived, we noticed there was no grill as advertised. So the manager contacted the owner and that day we had a new propane gas grill which was important as we planned to have families in for cookout. Plenty of games and puzzles to entertain. The one bedroom was perfect to put the kids in with parents on both sides. The big magnolia tree in the back was a favorite for the kids to hang out on. Also know the refrigerator does not have an ice maker so you will have to get ice. The overall experience was great and was a godsend to have. Thank you.

About the host

Hosted by Natalie

Host profile image
We are a family of five living in Wilmington and loving our beautiful city! Natalie began her career in hospitality management at The St. Regis Hotel in NYC and has a strong commitment to guest comfort and satisfaction. By purchasing the B&B, we fulfilled a life long dream.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this home after falling in love with it while staying as guests in the Bed and Breakfast. We were expecting our first child at the time, and moving to Wilmington, and this house felt like home from the first moment we entered it. The large, brightly lit rooms were filled with promise for a beautiful life with our growing family. As time went on we welcomed three children into our family while living in this home, and that has been the most important and exciting time of our lives. We now have the opportunity to share Magnolia House, as we originally purchased it to run the B&B. We welcome you to experience the beauty and history of Wilmington and Carolina Heights.

What makes this property unique

Our house has so many special qualities. What makes it special to us is its history and the architectural beauty. The front door alone is a beauty, and is unlike any other front door in the city. The traditional 1920s colonial style with arches, intricate carvings in the fireplace mantles, original tile in the bathrooms, original glass throughout the home, and the high ceilings are not what you would find in new construction. Wilmington is also a special destination, rich in history and culture. What better location than a family neighborhood with easy access to the river and the beach! It is our pleasure to share it with you.
