A recently updated chalet in the village at Big Powderhorn Mountain. Timbuktu is located at the end of a private cul-de-sac and within a short 10-minute walk to Big Powderhorn Lodge and ski lifts. Uniquely, Timbuktu is powered by an on-site solar system which is supplemented by other renewables. Timbuktu is a duplex with us, the owners, living next door. We are happy to assist with questions and advice about the local attractions. Pets are welcome for a fee of $20/pet/night. Come explore the Northwoods!

We had an amazing stay at this beautiful chalet. The farm, local experiences, and proximity to Copper Harbor and many stunning waterfalls made it even more special. The hosts were wonderful, and the apple jam they made was out of this world. Highly recommended!
We had a fantastic time staying at the Timbuktu Chalet. The location is great - very close to multiple ski areas, incredible hiking, and lake Superior destinations. The place itself was clean, no fuss, kitchen was fully stocked, and we made use of both the hot tub and sauna! Aaron was a fantastic host, and even gave us homemade jam as a Christmas surprise.
Really enjoyed the coziness of this property plus all of the cute touches everywhere. Everything was very clean and the owners are very friendly and helpful. I’m so thankful they allow dogs - it makes vacationing so much easier! This was the perfect winter getaway!
We rented the chalet for a ski trip with two families of four. We had an amazing time, enjoying some of the best skiing in the Midwest. The chalet is perfectly located on the slopes of Powderhorn Mountain, just a two-minute drive away. It’s very comfortable and well-appointed, with all the amenities listed in great condition. The hosts were excellent communicators, answering all my questions promptly and efficiently. The chalet is a bit small for the eight people listed, but it’s not a major issue. Overall, it’s a great location, a very clean place, and has an amazing mud room to store all our skiing gear and coats. The hosts were friendly and attentive, making our stay even more enjoyable. We would definitely consider coming back and would highly recommend this chalet.
This was a great spot for a girls hiking trip. The hosts were very responsive and gave us some tips. We also enjoyed the fresh eggs and lettuce from the hosts for purchase. Everything was clearly labeled in the home and loved our stay!
Property was neat to say the least. My son and husband got some gardening tips. Had some fresh farm eggs. The condo is decorated really nice. Hot tub was a must, even if the days were hot, felt good after a day of hiking.
If we ever come back to the area we will look into renting again.
Thank you

Such a wonderful place. Exceptionally clean, well designed, and great amenities including a sauna and hot tub. And it offers super convenient access to Nordic and alpine skiing. Owners are great with communication and had very thoughtful touches. I highly recommend.
Great home base for exploring the UP! Loved the Scandinavian decor and eco friendly/green living environment. Our hosts made it feel as though we were home. They gave great tips about what to see and do in the area. Hope to return during the winter season.
Could not recommend this rental highly enough. Aaron and Joce have an incredible, eco-conscious property. Not to mention, they are very accommodating hosts. From the local hard cider, to fresh farm eggs and recommendations on any and all attractions around the area. You would be hard pressed to find a better rental than Timbuktu.
We stayed at Timbuktu for just under a week in early January. It was fantastic. Location was outstanding for skiing, hiking, and grabbing food/groceries. With ski chalets closed, it was so convenient to be able to run back to the house for warming up and lunch. Lake Superior and a handful of great winter hikes to see some water falls are all within a 15min drive. So great. The house was excellent. Clean, organized, fully loaded with everything you'd need. Wi-Fi was good for my kids that were doing distance learning and for streaming movies at night. Our two dogs loved it too! Super easy access to/from and communication with the owners was outstanding. Quick and easy. It was our first time to this area and we'd love to come back in the summer to further explore the area.
This chalet is the cutest ever. With a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 year old we were able to make some magical Christmas time memories here. Big Powderhorn Mountain wasn’t open yet but Blackjack was about 15 min away. We got the kids on skis and it went great. There were hiking trails close by. Even some that led to small waterfalls. We took the 20 min drive to Lake Superior and, even with the cold, the kids were mesmerized by the waves and rock finding. Oh and the owners of this chalet (Jocelyn and Aaron) have chickens! We were able to purchase some eggs and even feed them! Everything was also done very COVID conscious which we appreciated very much. Great overall experience.
Our family was looking to disconnect from the bustle of the world and reconnect with one another. We found BOTH at Timbuktu. We could recommend this stay enough. It was everything the listing promised and more. We will definitely be back!
The rental process and communication with the owners was easy and a pleasurable experience. They were very pleasant and accommodating. The fall is such a beautiful time of the year in the UP and the chalet at the end of the cul-de-sac was peaceful. Can't wait to go back and hopefully see them again.
This chalet is perfectly situated for an outdoorsy vacation in the beautiful woods of Upper Michigan while enjoying all the comforts of a well-stocked home. Owners have decorated with a whimsical, arty and hip style that includes natural products and finishes. Chalet was spotlessly clean - plenty of disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizers so we had no covid worries. Comfy beds, fluffy towels, fans for warm days. Two decks for lounging around and lots of interesting happenings on the property - chickens, gardens, corn growing, apple orchard. Great area to walk and visit waterfalls, Lake Superior and hiking trails. Owners live on property but were available as needed - not in the least intrusive. We stayed a full month and didn't want to leave.
Great property! Amazing renters! The chalet was super clean and a great fit for our family (Mom & Dad/3 Kids/1 Dog). Easy access to Porcupine Mountains, Apostle Islands, and Ottawa National Forest. Beautiful beach of Lake Superior about 30 minutes away with 4 Beautiful waterfall hikes along the way. We would definitely do it again. Thanks J & A!
The chalet was adorable. It was everything we hoped for and more. We especially loved the fireplace and the projector-felt like we were at the movies! Great way to spend the end of the day after skiing-drinking a cup of cider(compliments of owners) watching a movie with a toasty fire going. We plan on coming back next year!
Trust me-you're going to love this place!!!
We enjoyed our stay at the Timbuktu Chalet very much. The chalet was very comfortable for our group of 3 adults and 2 boys ages 9 and 11. The owners were very responsive to our communications and keep a very welcoming place.
The chalet house is in perfect location for Skiing so close to Powderhorn
Aaron and his dogs were so neighborly and helpful. The house is comfortable and warm with cool interior details. Love the entry room where you can hang up outdoor gear. Would recommend to families with dogs.
very nice, clean, spacious property with wonderful views of the ski hill. This location was ideal for our trip, in near proximity to the ski hill, cross country ski trails, and snowshoe trail.
We will book again for our next trip to the UP
Timbuktu was our base for a mini-vacation exploring the Porcupine Mountains and Ottawa National Forest. The chalet was spotlessly clean, comfortable, and equipped with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We highly recommend Timbuktu.
