Amazing Location!

The complex this house is located in is really nice and centrally located to the other islands. We enjoyed being able to use the complex amenities and the house itself created a very comfortable stay.

Great time great ciews

We (family of 8) had a great time at this house. Location was just so relaxing and enjoyable. The house has everything you need to have an enjoyable OBX trip. We would certainly go back! One thing that left me concerned for the owners is that the cleaning crew may not be on their A-game. There was a bar of soap left in the shower, some food left in the pantry/freezer, there were several surfaces with a layer of dust, and the dishes needed to be washed again. This did not finish our enjoyment and I really don't have the words to explain how "at home" we felt. Thanks for a great week!

Beautiful property!

A beautiful home in a wonderful gated community. Convenient location, roomy and comfortable. Some deferred maintenance needs, including a couple of ceiling leaks that need to be repaired. Two flights of steps to access living space so not good for anyone with limited mobility. But nicely laid out for families or groups of friends.

Peaceful and Beautiful Family Getaway

Really enjoyed our stay at Hammock 50! The location was perfect for a quiet weekend spending quality family time together! The view from the upstairs living area was beautiful. The house layout suited our family perfect! Overall the house had what we needed to make our stay comfortable. The kitchen, lacked on a few things, but didn’t deter us from cooking and enjoying meals together. The owner was very responsive to all my inquiries and we would stay at Hammock 50 again.

Great Location and Lots of Room

We loved the location of the house and it has plenty of room for a big family or group. The house is in need of updating - the furnishings have some wear and the bathrooms are very dated and really need sprucing up. Overall though we enjoyed our stay and love the neighborhood. The owner is very responsive and we very much appreciate that.

Family getaway

The good- the house is roomy and plenty of space for my family. It’s nicely decorated and in a great neighborhood. We loved taking walks in the evening and seeing the wildlife along the doc. The restaurant on site was really good and plenty of entertainment nearby. We went to coquina beach instead of Jeanette’s because it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Highly recommended! The bad- I highly suggest the owner finds a new cleaning crew or has his property manager do so. This house has so much potential and it’s a shame that we had to clean before we could start enjoying our stay. Also, things like pillows and mattress covers MUST be replaced regularly when renting.

Needs a lot of work

The pictures look a lot better than the actual house. Do not get your hopes up. We walked into a very damp, wet smelling house. Water bugs on the floor, nasty stained pillows and beds. The whole place needs paint and carpet terribly bad. The carpets are in very rough shape, stained and smell. There was a window AC unit in the upstairs and the humidity level was 97-98% still. It is easy to see they have water damage/leaks and are still too lazy to fix it. It is very dated, not well cared for which is a shame because the location is great. After telling the owner we were not satisfied and would not be staying, he still insist he can make it right and tried to say that the humidity and dampness was because of the rain and normal (it’s not). Now I have lost the money for a place we didn’t even stay in because the owner insist in telling us we are wrong and what we saw and described isn’t accurate. Overall very disappointed and wouldn’t recommend this house at all. Luckily we had friends and family who had other places rented and made the best of it this past week.

Great location and community

We had a great time and really enjoyed the amenities of the Pirate’s Cove neighborhood. The restaurant on site was amazing. With that being said, the house needed some updating and a deep clean. While switches were labeled and a large number of them did not work including all of the outdoor lighting. That was especially frustrating on the top deck (grill) and on the lower deck (hot tub). The hot tub was clean and in good working order, however some minor repairs are needed. The AC seemed to struggle to keep the upper level cooled off; especially in the living area. One thing that could have helped that would be changing out the filters, they looked like they had not been changed in months. The air vents weredirty looking and the lights above the bed in the upstairs bedroom were as well. The attic access in the upstairs bedroom closet was not properly sealed, which lead to high humidity in the closet/dressing room area. Some of the boards on the porches and the walkway to get to the canal were loose, which could be a safety hazard. It also seems that repairs for water damage in the upstairs bedroom were not done well. Another very important thing to mention is that the automatic door lock was very finicky. It did not work when we checked in. On the second day, a repair man came by and we had him add batteries and it worked

Great Location and surrounding Amenities, Unfortunate Property Maintenance

House is great location, but that is where the benefits stopped. This house could have been great if it was maintained better- huge bummer! - The house was incredibly dirty, we had read a comment on this location on the VRBO website but thought this would have been addressed after somebody else said it. The kitchen cabinets were filthy inside and out, every corner of the house was filled with dust and hair, and the master shower was filled with mold in the crevices and corners, it was truly unfortunate. - The dishes in the cabinets when we first got there were dirty, we had to re-wash everything before we used them. - The two vacuums in the house were unusable. They were filled with so much dust/dirt/hair that we weren't able to use them, which is not helpful when staying with kids, cooking and sand. - There were ants that were coming up through behind the kitchen faucet. - Only one towel per person is not very beneficial, especially for females. - The downstairs shower off the bunk rooms would not drain when using it. - The furniture on the back deck was incredibly dirty and not inviting to enjoy. - The temperature in the living room/dining room/kitchen hovered around 80 degrees on average most days, making it very uncomfortable to spend time in those areas. - Part of the ceiling in the bathroom attached to the lower master bedroom by the hot tub was peeling and falling to the floor due to a slow leak or mold in the ceiling.

You Won't Want To Leave!

My wife and I are thrilled with our decision to stay in this wonderful Outer Banks home. If you choose to do the same you will not be disappointed. This being our first trip to the Outer Banks we were not sure where to stay. If you have been surfing VRBO you know the choices in this area are immense. We almost went south to Hatteras, we almost went north to Duck. After being here and visiting those areas we can say thank goodness we stayed in Pirate's Cove on Roanoke island. If you choose this home you will find QCV. Quality, Convenience and Value! Quality? The open areas and furnishings of this high end home make it a pleasure to stay in. The photographs don't do the home justice, especially the top floor which has the main living area and one of the two Master bedrooms. The special thing about the top floor is the entire back wall of the house, which looks over the boardwalk, canal, and across the salt grass marsh to the sound, is literally glass. What beautiful water vista's. The development is re-pleat with many many amenities and lovely homes however, one thing we are most amazed with is in the middle of everything offered this home is quiet, relaxed and removed from all sense of hustle and bustle. On the issue of convenience what a wonderful location. This home is CENTRALLY LOCATED to all the OBX has to offer. The beach is just across the bridge with ample public access, Roanoke island itself offers much to do. Easy day trips can be made all the way north to Corolla and South all the way to the southern end of Cape Hatteras. Going south it is even within the scope of a day trip to take the 40 minute ferry ride from Hatteras further south over to Ocracoke island. There you can Explore the former home of Blackbeard and see the oldest lighthouse standing in America. If one were staying north in Duck or South in Hatteras it would be hard to travel to and from the "other ends" of the OBX in a day. Nags Head is immediate to this home and filled with shopping which pleased my wife greatly. Going to Kitty Hawk is no more than a typical drive to town. As it pertains to value I'll say my wife and I usually vacation in October and we always stay in vacation homes. Who can be comfortable in a little matchbox hotel room for a week? Simply stated this home gave us as much or more "bang for our buck" as we have ever had. We have really enjoyed our first trip to the OBX and this home is a large part of the reason why. We don't want to leave!

great location, but needs attention

This was our second stay at Hammock 50. We visited for a week 2 years ago and had so much fun we decided to return. Let's start with the positives. I don't think you could find a better location in Manteo or even in Pirates Cove. The views are spectacular. You can park your boat in the canal in the back and we love the layout of the house with all the bedrooms but the master downstairs with the living area upstairs. Fantastic. Unfortunately, it appears that the owners have decided to reap the rewards of rent payments without putting any of the money back into the house. We had a number of issues this week which could have all been prevented with a little attention by the owners. Here is a summary of all the problems with the house. A month before arrival we were notified that we needed to move back a week because one of the owners wanted our week. Fortunately I could make this work in our schedule. The outside shower barely works. It's just a dribble of water even with nothing else running. When we arrived at the house the dishwasher was full of dirty dishes (egg covered pans and plates). The owner offered to buy me a dishwasher packet. Thanks. There were plastic bottles all over the house, several kitchen cabinets hinges are broken, there were soda cans thrown around out back, about 50 bottle caps on the ground and broken glass around the hottub. The master bed was completely made, but with a mildew covered pillowcase. There were only 5 bath towels in the house and 1 washcloth (the maid service brought more on request). The floors and rugs are filthy and stained. The downstairs ceilings are watermarked from a poor patch job after an apparent water leak. The cable in the downstairs master barely works because the cable from the wall is frayed (just like it was 2 years ago). The 2nd master bathroom has a shower door that is broken. The kitchen chairs are held together with black duct tape and they put black "covers" on the chairs that are covered in hair and filth. There is a "basement" with a room and a bed that looked like someone had just climbed out of it with unmade bedding. If there were only a few issues then I would consider staying here again. However, I spent 2 days of our trip dealing with problems at the house before we felt comfortable. We will find a different location next time we come to Manteo which is disappointing because the property has so much potential in a spectacular neighborhood.

Beware...Pictures are misleading

Pirate Cove, the community this home is located in was very pretty and maintained. The location and view of the water was gorgeous and was very convenient to shops and restaurants. That's where the positive experience ends. Photos online were a stark contrast to our experience in person. After booking, we were sent more info about the house. Including items that didn't work and the fireplace which we weren't allowed to use. The entire first day we had to go purchase cleaning supplies and products to stock the house with. The house was filthy and took hours to clean, just to make our stay somewhat habitable. The house is very neglected. The furniture is falling apart. The towels and blankets were all frayed and gross. The extra pillows downstairs had what appeared to be yellow drool or urine stains all over them. Some window treatments were missing or weren't operable. Multiple ceilings and window frames had mold on them or were missing drywall finish. There were brown finger prints on some of the bathroom doors. The dining room chairs have black tape on the seats and are covered with disgusting covers that come off when in use. The fridge and freezer were taped together. The kitchen knobs were mismatched or peeling. One of the cabinet doors hung off the hinges. Majority of the pots, pans, and kitchenware had food stuck to them. There were no paper towels, no dishwasher detergent, and very little toilet paper provided. The heating unit upstairs was not operable. It was so cold, we had to go buy a space heater for family members staying in the upstairs room. When we reached out to the owner regarding the issue, no apology or solution was given. The entire house had small black bugs on the floors. There was also a razor blade left in the window seal of the dining room, which our toddler could have gotten hold of. When you spend money to go on vacation, you have the expectation that it will be just as nice a stay or better than your own home. This was far from that. Overall, this was the worst experience we've had through VRBO. I would be embarrassed and ashamed to present this space to my guests. Or charge them a cleaning fee when the house is disgusting. I question what quality control measures VRBO requires of their renters and will be following up with them on this experience too. Hopefully, this "feedback" will be considered and the conditions will be improved for the next family looking to visit the Outerbanks.

About the host

Your host

Host profile image
Two families that live in Roanoke, Virginia own Hammock 50 @ Pirate's Cove. The families owned a whole grain bread store in Roanoke, Virginia from 1995-2002. It's at this point that they discovered the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the breathtaking vistas of the shore. Soon after this, they purchased the home from a sea captain and began the journey.

Why they chose this property

'When are we going to get there,' is what we heard from the backseat as we headed down the road to OBX about 10 years ago. When these six children finally got there, they discovered the many adventures that OBX offered. And, Pirate's Cove seemed like the perfect place to drop anchor. We want to share our little oasis with the many travelers that choose the Outer Banks. The six kids live in Roanoke, VA with their beautiful moms and fishing crazy fathers. One day we will get there again, ENJOY!

What makes this property unique

Did I mention the views. The gorgeous sunsets over Manteo, the continuous parade of fishing boats. Two pools, a fitness center, two play areas, tennis courts, a marina, a restaurant and raw bar and that's not even leaving the campus. Great for biking, walking, strolling or generally just hanging out with a favorite beverage looking over the Roanoke Sound and contemplating life's next adventure. Which could be the Aquarium, the Sand Dunes, the Beach, Kitty Hawk Kites, the Wright Brothers Memorial, a great restaurant, the Tanger Outlets, the Whalebone Tackle Shop, the cute shops in Manteo, etc.
