Renter Beware
We narrowed our vacation search to this and one other site. I contacted this owner and asked whether the Mass Pike could be heard from the site (since it appeared close by on the map). I also asked about availability of watercraft since I thought about bringing my own kayak. I was told the Mass Pike could not be heard and that a canoe and rowboats were available. The picture on the ad showed a dock in the water. The owner's response and availability of dock for swimming and sitting induced us to book this site instead of the other. Mistake. On arrival, from the deck of the house we could clearly hear traffic and trucks downshifting on the Mass Pike. The next day we discovered the dock was on shore and the " canoe" was a plastic flat bottomed elongated rowboat. I contacted the owner about the dock and he suggested my spouse and I were welcome to push the dock in the water!!!! What??? The well water was highly mineral and undrinkable. It had stained the toilet bowls brown . It was unpleasant to even shower in. The exterior of the house was in disrepair. The screened porch was so unattractive inside and out and in such disrepair we never used it. The screens had holes. This was particularly ironic since the owner suggested we use the porch as primary access to the house since the major sliders to the deck had no screens! Entry on the lower level was over uneven pavers, past garbage bins and greasy grills. The bathrooms are small and dated ( 1970's?). The kitchen is new and very nice . Certain utility systems seem to have been recently updated by the look of the very clean utility room (although the washer requires attendance to keep it advancing). The downstairs leather couches are stained and the upstairs couches well worn as well. This property is a nice large house on a small but pretty pond. The owner seems to have worked on aspects of making it pleasant, but it needs a lot of work to make it rentable at anywhere near what is being asked. The owner needs to be upfront about the deficits, including the water quality (which is major) , noisy proximity to the Pike and fact that the watercraft does NOT include a canoe ( he was honest about the fact that he only had kayak paddles and no canoe paddles) . Oh, and if you go, bring your own soap and facecloths unless you don't mind used bar soaps and don't need facecloths. Even dish and detergent soaps supplied were only enough for a day or so....Renter be warned.
