Spectacular Waterfront Retreat On South Pender Island - Low Bank Beachfront

See our aerial video by opening photos, and scroll to position #3.

Gowlland Point Place is an expansive, private setting that provides incomparable views and access to a spectacular marine environment. The main house sits on over 300 feet of low-bank shoreline, with a panoramic view of the San Juan Islands, Mt. Baker and ships en route between the Pacific Ocean and nearby ports. Enjoy the seaside environment and abundant wildlife from a large wrap-around deck, or directly on one of the area’s most desirable beaches. Orca, porpoise, otter, bald eagles and deer are common sights. The view is equally enjoyable during inclement weather from fireside in the sea-view living room. An available guest cottage allows up to eight people to enjoy the property. The three-plus acre property includes a historic orchard and a forested perimeter that provides a reclusive ambiance. Neighboring Brooks Point and Gowlland Point Conservancy Areas add to the property’s natural tranquility.

There is a one-week minimum rental period from mid-June through Labour Day and during the Christmas/New Year's holiday period.

Lovely Stay
Great location to watch the sun rise and whales pass by. The accommodations were cozy, and my children loved watching the deer in the yard every morning and evening.

Amazing
Our stay at the cottage was perfect. The view was stunning, we had all our meals on the patio enjoying the view while eating. We stayed for four days, we were lucky to see whales on there days. Garden was beautiful, deers were in the garden all the time. You could watch deers out of the kitchen cleaning up the dishes. Kids had wonderful time on the beach picking up special rocks and chasing tiny crabs. There is number of hiking trails within the walking distance, easy for kids as well.

Lovely place to get away from it all
We were two families of four, with young children. This house and it’s lovely setting were perfect for us. The house feels very homely, full of books and well stocked with linens and everything you could need in the kitchen. The setting is just lovely and we plan to return when possible.

Weekend getaway
Lovely location. Great beach trails at your front door. Master bedroom very spacious and comfortable , the other bed rooms were small and the double bed not very comfortable. Cottage was very neat and clean and had everything we needed for our family weekend retreat.

Wonderfully private place with open space to relax. We all loved it!
We spent three nights on Pender Island and were surprised about this estates size. It is much bigger than can be seen on the photos. The garden is perfect for kids to play and the beach access is just perfect. Nearby are trails that lead to other beaches and were fun to explore with kids. The house is relatively old but well maintained and offered everything we needed. Also, the owner Richard was very helpful with every questions we had and was quick to answer them. All of us (7) really enjoyed our time there and would definitely come again!

A nice comfortable house with a fabulous view
I don't tend to write a lot of reviews, but our visit was outstanding. The house itself is was very comfortable and clean. The main room had bookshelves with lots of books. We prepared all our meals in the kitchen, which had a very adequate supply of pans and dishes. What was most outstanding was the view from the back porch, which looks out toward the San Juan islands. It was gorgeous. We saw harbor seal, otters, and all kinds of birds, including a bald eagle. It was a fabulous weekend, especially for my 82 year old mother who had flown from Oklahoma to make the trip with us. A great trip!

magical experience at South Pender
Our family spent the Thanksgiving weekend at this wonderful home. We brought three of our grandchildren and they loved the tree house and swing as well as beach walks and apple picking. The house was clean and well stocked with linens, towels and kitchen necessities. The location is amazing and we enjoyed the natural setting, seeing lots of wildlife and open ocean vistas. Our host was very responsive and helpful and we felt very much 'at home' during our stay. Thank you so much for opening your home, we appreciate being able to enjoy this magical place.

Beautiful & private location.
This property is located in a beautiful ocean front location with great views of Mt.Baker, passing ships and marine life. Our family was lucky enough to see a family of deer in the yard, an otter playing in the bay, sea lions, many birds and a pod of Orcas passing by! The house was clean, cozy and inviting. The front deck is a lovely spot to sip on a drink, smell fresh ocean air and take in the views as you relax. Communication with Richard was pleasant and easy. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for natural beauty, privacy and a peaceful retreat on south Pender island.

Perfect family beach vacation spot
This is the perfect home to stay in for a family beach vacation. Send the kids down to play on the beach in the morning and call them back up for lunch from the front deck. Their days will be spent discovering crabs and creatures in the tide pools, watching otters play in the bay and making driftwood forts on the beach. This cozy and well kept home had lots of space for our extended family. We found the house clean on arrival and well stocked with everything we needed.

This is an amazingly beautiful location
As a bunch of kayakers, our main focus was water access and proximity to islands and places to visit. We were therefore pleasantly surprised to find that the house was really comfortable and homey. A lovely place to come back to at night to relax and prepare meals in the very well equipped kitchen. The mornings would find us having coffee on the deck, watching the weather come in and looking for marine life. We saw otters, whales, seals and lots of birds. In the afternoon, we hiked along the ocean and through the woods taking photos of lots of birds including turkey vultures. In the evening, we would watch our visiting family of deer who enjoyed the apples from the orchard. The house was clean, attractive and very comfortable. I would certainly recommend it to others, especially nature lovers.

A very special place!
We have stayed at this lovely cottage for the past several years with our family. It is a very special place indeed! The cottage is clean and homey, with a well-equipped kitchen that looks out to the old orchard on the property. The living room faces the ocean and the view is spectacular! There is never a shortage of things to look at or to explore on the waterfront - boats, deer, cargo ships, otters, bald eagles, sea birds, tidal pools, and the occasional pod of orcas. The property is right beside Brooks Point which is a lovely place to walk. This cottage has a lot of history and is a truly lovely place to recharge and get away from the city. The water is on a well so it's wise to purchase drinking water, and it's imperative to be thinking of water conservation while using the property. We will be back!

Spectacular doesn't begin to say it
We spent a delightful week at Richard's lovely home on South Pender Island. We haven't been home for long, but we're already trying to figure out how we can get back next summer. The location is perfect -- looking right out over the water at the San Juan Islands and Mount Baker, watching ever-changing weather and sea patterns. We discovered a previously-unsuspected fascination with watching the shipping traffic and identifying the vessels (because...of course...there's an app for that), and looked forward to the regular visits from sea otters, seals, blue herons, and -- yes, just once -- a small group of whales. (Hint: When the whale-watching boats converge on the point, grab the binoculars that Richard and his family make conveniently available.) On land, a couple of deer would drop by at sunset most nights, looking for fallen apples from the trees on the property. The house is comfortable, homey, and welcoming -- the setting pretty much forced us to get into a slow routine and relax, which was exactly how we'd hoped the week would go. The one caution is that this is a private home on a well, not a hotel with unlimited water supply. But even with five people in our group, we had no problems with water supply or temperature.

The perfect oceanfront retreat into nature
Our family enjoyed another amazing holiday at this relaxing rural home on South Pender - it was exactly what we needed. The home is quietly elegant, blending modern conveniences and comfort with a touch of rustic, and heartfelt evidence all around of the rich history of this longtime family property. The large property offers privacy with the option to pop down the short path to the public beach. From the kitchen window looking into the orchard with visiting deer, to BBQs on the wrap-around deck, we enjoyed watching the sun rise and Mount Baker blush at sundown. We were treated with an orca pod coming right into the bay in front of the house, and another the next day around the point and park a short few steps from the property. The owner was very helpful and gave us all the info we needed to find the home and to ensure we had a wonderful time. The house was clean with lovely floors and granite countertops, and we enjoyed perusing the books and playing the games. We adjusted easily to conserving water, and appreciated the convenience of being able to do some laundry when needed. A highlight was having our own rustic tennis court to cap it off. We enjoyed some nearby hikes and beach exploration, roadstand veggies and the Blood Star Gallery. Joe's Place in the main Driftwood Village, is not to be missed. We attended an art show at the island's Sea Star winery, fresh local food and crafts at the Saturday morning market, and a pint at the pub. But most of all, we loved just sitting on the deck or in the livingroom, watching the otters, seals, eagles, deer, and orcas doing their thing, and cargo ships quietly gliding en route to their far-reaching destinations. We would highly recommend this oceanfront experience and can't wait to return, ourselves.

Amazing location and great house!
We stayed at this house for 3 nights during May long weekend. Amazing location and great, well maintained house. Beach is just a step away!!! Kids enjoyed running in the large backyard, playing with swings and of course playing tennis in the tennis court. Can't wait to come back next year. Definitely would recommend to my friends.

Wonderful Home Away From Home
My husband and I stayed in this beautiful island home for three months while our home nearby was being renovated. The owner, Richard, was really good to deal with. He was very friendly, helpful and easy to contact. The property itself is just as described, only better. The house and yard are very clean, well-kept and well-appointed. It has everything you need for not only short but longer stays. The views of the sunrises, sunsets and passing marine life are exceptional. On our first day there, we saw a gray whale, and later, orcas, seals, mink, otters and eagles. In the winter, storm-watching can be done from the front room window, while the wood burning stove provides cozy warmth. There is a passing parade of marine traffic to watch, including pleasure boats, working boats and cruise ships, all lit up at night. The island itself offers a lot of amenities year-round, including many activities for young and old. There is a very good grocery store, bakery, liquor store and gas station and a few good places to dine out. The Saturday Farmers' Market provides lots of great edibles and a chance to sample some local culture. There are many artists on the island who market their products at the Market or at their own studios. Poets Cove is a lovely resort just two miles up the road, and you can access their swimming pool, pub and restaurant in the summer months. You can also rent a boat or kayak there or just sit and watch the float planes take off. A local Aqua fit group uses the pool and welcomes new people to the class. What a lot of fun! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home and don't hesitate to recommend it to our friends and family.

Stunning Island Retreat
Every summer our family explores different vacation rentals on the islands of Coastal BC, and this year we finally found the location that we want to return to again and again. As a family of four, the property and home had everything we could have asked for. It was comfortable and spacious, with a beautiful deck along the full length of the house from which we could sit and watch the Orca whales as they passed by almost daily. The beach was perfect for the kids to explore and the nearby trails provided nice entertainment. There was a weekend farmer's market and we bought live crab from Port Browning for dinner. When we didn't feel like cooking we made the 5 minute drive to the beautiful Poet's Cove resort down the road and enjoyed their restaurant facilities. (Poet's Cove also has a spa and a pool which you can access as well). This property really offers the best of all worlds. We loved it so much that we returned for one final weekend away over Labour Day long weekend. I suspect we will be back next year as well.

Listing description was accurate, more than we had hoped for. Directions from owner were excellent, also he accommodated all our needs with no hesitation. Had a wonderful stay, lots of interesting trails to the beach to explore, a delightful visit to the local saturday farm market, excellent hand made crafts. We visited several local and private home galleries. Found everyone friendly. I would most definitly recommend this retreat to my friends and family.

Great Family Vacation In a Beautiful Location
We were very happy with our visit to this retreat on South Pender Island. It is in a wonderful secluded location with a glorious view south towards Mt. Baker floating seemingly in the sky. The property is very well equipped and we appreciated all the homely touches. There are spacious grounds for children / adults to play. If that's not enough, the beachfront or coastal walking trails nearby are easily accessible too. It's a hilly drive back to the island centre, but what you lose in convenience you make up for many times over in terms of peace and tranquility. We were very happy with the communication we received from Richard. The only thing to watch for is the very discrete entrance off the road. Don't be in a hurry as you drive, or you'll miss it the first time. We enjoyed salmon fishing and kayaking on the island. It is a great escape from city life. We would love to stay again. It's a great place for a family holiday.

Wonderful vacation destination!
This is an ideal vacation rental - private, spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. We had lots of room (as a family of 4) and enjoyed the beach, the nearby walking trails, the enormous yard, and of course the beautiful house itself. The owner was very accommodating and easy to make arrangements with. I definitely recommend this property rental for anyone who would like to spend time on the gulf islands. It doesn't get any better than this!!

Perfect summer vacation
We enjoyed a lovely week. The location is perfect - great ocean access, quiet, fabulous views. We kayaked, swam, biked, hiked and played bocce ball all around the large and lovely property. I especially enjoyed the hummingbirds. The home is very well appointed and spacious. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and will likely be back. Thanks!

Amazing beachfront property
Wow, this property has it all, amazing views, a well-kept home and a safe beach front. From the shoreline, we viewed eagles, seals and sea lions everyday. We were lucky enough to watch a couple of pods of killer whales off the nearby point for over one hour! The kids were thoroughly entertained outside with the beach, tidal zones, the yard and adventure walks along the shores and into the nearby trails. Thank you Richard, all communications and transactions were seamless. We hope to return very soon to this fantastic property on South Pender.

R & R + amazing Mother Nature moments!
You can't conceive of this amazing setting until you experience first-hand. By the end of our week stay we'd ventured out to taste-test the highlights of N/S Pender Island including artist studios, boutiques, a winery, a farmer's market, and the local 'shopping area' for grocery, liquor, bakery and take-out lunch items ... but while all were very pleasant none compared to this property -- you just simply don't want to leave! After the first day, every other began at the crack of dawn by our toddler's command ("Outside! Outside! Water! Water!") who was as taken as we by the soft pebble-strewn beach and view of passing otters, seabirds, and seals. Grab your coffee, shovel, pail and children and adults alike will happily spend a few hours watching the world wake up. Back to the house for breakfast and seagazing at the stunning view provided by the wraparound porch, then change into swimsuits and return to the water, too frigid even in July for swimming, but perfectly lovely for a quick dip, rock throwing, stone skipping, fishing, reading, sunning, sea creature seeking. As the day grows older you realize the beach serves as a path to a beautiful nature walk ... which affords passing conversations with a few locals and fellow visitors. Suddenly, there's a buzz of boat activity offshore, a sure indication a pod of orca whales are within sight. So you scramble up the cliffside to see the show and marvel with a few others lucky enough to catch the moment. Where else can an 18 month old get so close he learns that a whale goes "pssshhhhhhhh!" by hearing the sound of water leaving the blowhole as it arcs out of the water! So, you flow in and out of the house for meals ... down to and back up from the beach for entertainment ... pausing to watch the bald eagle fly back and forth overhead now that he's used to your presence ... or to watch in awe as container ships slide quietly by, leaving a wake of waves to play in ... while looking forward to the visits from the local deer who will emerge daily at dusk and dawn. The sun sets at 10 allowing the bliss stretch on and on until you finally allow yourself to go to sleep -- knowing it will all be there for you in the morning to enjoy, again. Add to this a VERY responsive and professional owner and a spacious, clean, well maintained, comfortable home and you'll want to return before you've even left! Many thanks for the unmatched experience - we hope to visit again soon.

Owner very pleasant and professional
Although I unfortunately had to cancel my stay at Gowlland Point Place for personal reasons, I was very impressed with the way both my reservation and cancellation were handled. When I made the booking I wired a deposit to the owner, Richard. Receipt of the deposit was acknowledged promptly. When I subsequently cancelled my reservation within the time limit set out in the contract, Richard was very polite and understanding. My deposit, minus a small cancellation fee (explained in the contract), was returned promptly. Both transactions were handled very pleasantly and professionally. I am planning to stay at Gowlland Point Place later this year or during 2013. Thank you Richard.
