About this property

Lake Michigamme-Grandpa Raoul’s Cottage

This Old Rustic Cottage is designed with an emphasis on Rustic as a remote country cottage nestled in the hillside on the shore of beautiful Lake Michigamme. The Cottage is conveniently located a mile and a half off US 41 / M 28 and the Van Riper State Park Entrance on Marquette County's premiere body of recreational water and is very easy to find. In addition to its recent beautiful Rustic interior renovations the Cottage is well stocked and features spacious decks, 223 feet of Lake Michigamme water frontage, pebble beach swimming (we recommend water shoes), boat and fishing dock, kayaks, canoe, 2 outdoor camp fire pits (firewood supplied), wild life and eagle viewing. Just a few minutes drive up the road, Van Riper State Park provides a beautiful sandy beach. Plus, good fishing, and scenic hiking trails are just minutes away. Bring your boat, two launches are available and moor your entire stay at our dock. If the evenings get chilly the Cottage is quickly heated by the thermostatically controlled Wood Pellet Stove which is easy to fill and operate. In August 2021, we installed satellite internet and have received good preliminary reviews of the property Wi-Fi available to guests. There are also assorted DVD's favorites (Dances with Wolves, The God Father Series, The Note Book etc. etc.) to watch on Blu Ray but we can almost guarantee you'll fall asleep before the movie ends. Caveat: The cottage bedrooms are small but very cozy. Also, the owner no longer lives onsite during the rental season, however owner assistance is only 20 minutes away. We’d like to thank you for selecting our Old Rustic Cottage for your vacation. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Lovely lake side retreat

Host was very nice and we really enjoyed staying here for the week. Sunsets were beautiful and it was a good location for day trips to see all that the Western UP has to offer; Copper Harbor, Marquette, Pictured Rocks in Munising, waterfalls... we had a great time. Thank you!

Relaxing cozy cottage

Home was just as described. Well stocked and lots of thought put into the small things, like shelfs next to beds & extra throw blankets for chili nights. The tree colors across the lake were nearly peak & the lake and outdoor areas of the cottage did not disappoint

Great cabin

We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin on the lake was great. It was well stocked and the hosts were more than welcoming. It has a boat dock/fishing pier. The lake was fun for fishing, boating, kayaking and just relaxing. Couldn’t ask for a better place to spend a weekend or in the UP. We hope to go again.

Wonderful Stay on Lake Michigamme

My family and I loved our stay here! The views of the lake are beautiful, especially at sunrise and sunset. The lake was very quiet, and we loved swimming and using the provided kayaks. It was warm the week we stayed, so we didn't get many bites, but my son loved fishing from the pier. The cabin was very nice for my family of four. It was clean and the kitchen was well stocked. The location was the perfect base for some of our day trips. We were able to visit Pictured Rocks and the Keweenaw Peninsula, which were both about an hour and twenty minutes away in opposite directions. We also visited Marquette, which was only about 45 minutes away. We had a great time here, and would definitely return in the future!

Amazing lakeside vacation

We stayed at Grandpa Raouls for 4 nights and it was great! Location was perfect. Quiet and peaceful. Lovely lake with dock for fishing. My 5 year old son loved swimming in the lake. It was close to state park with swimming beach and trails . Only regret is we didn’t see a moose!😂 We would highly recommend this rental.

Wonderful Get Away

The home is overall cute but could use some updates and some repairs. It is located in a beautiful peaceful area and right on the lake. The owners have kayaks you can use and they have a well maintained pier. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, plates, pots and pans. If you plan on mixing anything together though bring a mixing bowl. The bathroom was well stocked with towels, wash cloths and toilet paper. The owners also, left us a tasty wine to enjoy. There is a lot to do there. There is geocaches near by, fishing is pretty good, two fire pits, quiet road for biking or hiking, decent yard to play games, corn hole and the list goes on. We definitely enjoyed our stay.

Upper Peninsula lake Michigamme

Great location and views. Justin did an amazing job keeping us comfortable on very unusual hot weather and installed a window air-conditioner in the living room, in addition to already existing circulating fans in all 3 rooms. Communication was always easy and efficient. I wish we could enjoy outside deck alot more than we could due to mosquitoes. Thermacel lamps did slightly help but everyone still got bit. Expected w woods and lake I guess. Thank you Justin for your help and accommodation.

A beautiful vista for a proposal

My girlfriend and I (now fiance) went for a weekend away with her parents to this beautiful cabin. The space is cozy, and the landscaping wonderful and comfortable. A small sand beach adorns the natural red hue of lake Michigamme, giving easy access for swimming or canoeing. To the right of the beach a small point is made from a retaining wall which forms a point in the water. From the point, a full westward view is available to glimpse some of the most beautiful sunsets we have seen. After sunset, a line of torches can be lit to offer comfortable lighting to the deck. Alternatively a very robust fire pit is there which allows you to make a roaring fire to enjoy the evening by. In the morning, as the sun rises, the entire lake takes on a low mist that bounces the multicolored sun between the red lake and the mist. All of this is set in a quiet, nature filled setting. It is amazing how much time you can spend watching the humming birds zip about, listening the water softly lap against the shore, and -most importantly- the distinct lack of traffic noises.

Quaint cottage on a peaceful lake

Great getaway. The only suggestion is to replace the queen mattress - it has a deep hole in the middle. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay despite a wasp sting and power outage that Justin was able to handle promptly and professionally.

Lovely cottage!

We enjoyed our stay here so much. Cottage has everything you need. So much outdoor seating with chairs and loungers. 2 fire pit options with plenty of firewood provided. 3 kayaks and a canoe available to use. Love being just 40 min from Marquette. We would definitely stay here again!!

Destination wedding

We attended a destination wedding held at a home on Holli Blue Rd and chose this rental for it's proximity. We loved it! The view is spectacular, the cabin is cozy, they had kayaks available to use. The hosts even helped me find an auto repair shop when I had car trouble!

Quiet Getaway

We stayed here the first week of September where the weather is a bit unpredictable. Great lake views from house and outside deck and dock. Got to see a couple storms roll in over the lake. OLD cabin that has been updated in some areas. Windows are very drafty on a windy day, the pellet stove warmed up the main living area but not the bedrooms. Also the bed was comfy, but small and creaky. Overall experience was good. Grandpa Raoul was very helpful with our flat tire on our trailer, let us use his jack since we had forgot ours!

amazing place

We had a real blast staying here!!! We travelled for a relaxed vacation with my wife and 2 children (5 and 2 year old). The cabin was impecable, had everything we needed. The view and access to the lake were incredible. We decided to cook just there and enjoy the place. There is a grill you can use as well. Kids enjoyed the little beach we had, and we did several trails and visits to the parks around. Close to the cabin (3 min drive) there is the main entrance to the state park, were there is even more beach - super shallow and safe for the little kids-, two playgrounds and also laundry service if needed (bring your coins!). Raoul and Justin were amazing hosts, kind people, who pay attention to details. We really loved the place. We wish could have recorded the sounds and the view of the lake to bring us home. We strongly recommend this place and will definitely return.

Fishing with family.

We have fished Michigamme before so the lake was familiar to us. It's really a beautiful vacation cabin. We had 3 boats and 5 adults over 18 plus two teenagers. The weather was beautiful all week so the cottage size, for this group, was okay. Raoul was hesitant to rent to us concerned about our comfort. I assured him of our ability to coexist only because of the closeness of our family. If it had been a rainy week the trip could have been entirely different. The cottage is very well equipped and as a bonus we found 4 bottles of wine, coffee beans and grinder plus all the fixings for s'mores waiting on us. Nice flat screen but after fishing we played cards. The cottage has 4 different beautiful areas to relax outside with comfortable deck chairs. Nicely shaded, the lack of air conditioning was just slightly missed even though the sunny daytime temps were in the mid to hi 80's. My wife and I are out of shape 67 year-olds but the steps, taken slowly, were not an issue. Multiple trips to the dock were made by the teens. We made arrangements before hand to clean fish and store the 3 trailers off sight. There would have been ample room to store the trailers on the property. We wanted to respect the property, so only one fish was cleaned in a boat at the dock. We caught over 200 walleyes, mostly small. 35 were over 15" which provided 2 nice fish fries and some to freeze and take home. I would highly recommend this cottage for 4 people.

Perfect for our family of 4

The house was perfect for us (2 adults and 2 kids, ages 8 and 11). We loved having access to the water every day. Many little extra details, including sheets, blankets, salt, pepper, spices, sharp knives, dishes, pots, pans, roasting sticks, 2 pie irons, and kiln-dried wood for the fire pits. The beds were comfortable and the house was warm enough. The rocky beach and chilly water meant that our water shoes and wetsuits were much appreciated. Even so, we enjoyed the water every day, by canoeing, kayaking, and playing on the innertubes/floaties that we brought. The lake's healthy tea color and waves made snorkeling a bit pointless, but my 11 year old gave it a good try (supervised and with a life vest). One particularly chilly day, we went for a hike at Iron Ore Heritage Trail. At night, we usually roasted marshmallows and settled down to watch one of our movie DVDs. We didn't miss wifi. We look forward to a return visit.

Beautiful

This property is right on the lake with beautiful views of the lake from the house. There is excellent privacy and the feel of being away from lots of people. We enjoyed the kayaks, swimming, and just sitting on the deck eating. The nearby state park has great hiking trails and nearby Marquette has excellent restaurants. I highly recommend this property

What makes this property unique

I can not recall the number of evenings my late wife and I took our wine glasses out to the deck an silently watched the changing array of colors as the sun slipped past the horizon. Beginning with faint mauve fingers along the horizon and slowly elegantly shifting to an explosion of deep reds consuming the entire heavens. We'd hold hands across our out door table and gaze West saying nothing as our Creators color fusions made words unnecessary while simultaneously deepening our commitment to one another. I'd like to share that experience with all you hopeless romantics.
