About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.

Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area), and is located on the South fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.

Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.

The Redwoods In Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance of everything that Wawona has to offer and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

Great place to stay while visiting Yosemite!

Nice house, thoughtful layout, conveniently inside the park so no sitting in the car for hours waiting in line to get into the park every day! Checking in and out is a breeze. Owner is very responsive and great to deal with. There’s a well stocked market two blocks away. Highly recommend!

Great Location Inside Yosemite

This house was very new and in a great location. Being inside the park saved us a lot of time each day getting to sites in Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point. The house was very clean, and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed the hot tub and sitting on the deck listening to the creek that is right beside the property. It would have been very helpful to have more than one bath towel for each adult, since we had to use the same towel when using the hot tub and taking a shower in the morning. I know this has been mentioned in other reviews, but no extra towels were in the house. Guest are not going to pack towels when traveling by plane to reach the location. So, please consider adding more towels. Many thanks for this great house.

Great family getaway

Our family of 5 loved staying in this freshly remodeled, immaculate but comfortable home in Wawona. It was great to be close to the services in Wawona and the Mariposa Grove but just a 45 minute scenic drive to the Yosemite Valley visitor center. We loved coming back to the house at night to cook, enjoy the hot tub, and work on puzzles. We highly recommend this home.

Stay in Yosemite

This rental was very nice. We would definitely stay there again. There are other cabins around, but not too close. And it was very quiet and serene. The unit was pretty and a good size for our family.

Sanest way to do park

New very clean house in an established century -old community filled with funky and delightful cabins. Lots of privacy (tho internal walls are thin). Beautiful babbling Creek audible from rooms down steep slope next to house. Wonderful challenging hiking trail and your own private waterfall at entrance to community. Very friendly and helpful staff and neighbors. I never had to wait more than a few minutes to have an issue addressed (some power problems this summer in community). Best aspect: no three hour wait at the park gates. You’re already in the park and that gives you tremendous flexibility, because there are hordes of tourists in the summer! stock up before you get here, however. Don’t forget to stop at REIMERS in Oakhurst for divinity , fudge, and the best ice cream you’ll ever taste. A needed refuge to come back to after enduring lines of tourists and 3 hours to find parking in The Valley. Best tip was in one of the cabins guidebooks. (When in valley, Park in the dirt at the edge of the official lots.) . Cabin is now much better stocked with kitchenware than indicated in earlier reviews. Spa clean, new and works well.

Lovely Home … Perfect access to Yosemite

This was a wonderful property overall. As a whole it was very clean and had great access to Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove. Glacier Point was closed during our trip. The layout of the house was perfect for our family, and the Jack and Jill bathroom worked really well for our kids. We enjoyed being able to cook and grill most of our meals at the house. Internet was more than sufficient for the time we were in the house. We had no issues and check in was no contact and easy so we never spoke to management. Cons: Initial issues with cleanliness of dishes in dishwasher that meant they had to be rewashed, but that had more to do with the previous guests failing to rinse the dishes properly. There were only 4 towels for 4 people which is generally fine, but we had to use them for the hot tub as well as showers. Finally, if you’re planning to cook for more than two people, know there isn’t a large sauté pan, hot pads, a colander, or a cookie sheet. Tips: There is a great general store in Wawona. We ran in a few times to grab some necessities, but you’ll probably want to stock up on groceries in Oakhurst. Buy EVERYthing you need to cook. Staying in Yosemite is the way to go because it gives you a head start when you want to drive to Yosemite Valley which is about an hour’s drive. We spent quite a bit of time hiking in the valley area, but also take advantage of the hikes in Wawona and in Mariposa Grove. Both offer beautiful sights and do not miss seeing the Sequoia trees.

Perfect for a Group Trip to Yosemite

The property was pretty much exactly as pictured on the internet - no surprises. We had a group of 6 and we were very comfortable. There are several hiking trails near the cabin, so we enjoyed hiking those, but also drove to Yosemite Valley on other days. We saw deer, coyotes, etc. It was beautiful. I would highly recommend!

Lovely Cabin in Yosemite National Park

We loved our stay here for our anniversary! The cabin is about 45 minutes away from Yosemite Valley. We loved the Chinnaluah falls trail that was just down the road. The property was very clean and had extra blankets. As others previously stated there were two bath towels per bathroom, so we brought extras with us for the hot tub. We loved our stay and had a great time! Thank you for having us! :)

Nice place, great location

The house is really nice and I loved the area. It was clean, lots of space around, lots of games, kids loved it. I'm giving it 4 stars b/c the BBQ ran out of gas half way through cooking our lunch and I did not get a response from the office when I called. So we filled up the tank ourselves to finish cooking the meal and were told we would not get reimursed for the cost. Few other things that bothered me: not many towls (1 per person) and no laundry detergent, hot tub had a funny smell and would not heat up past 93 degrees, no coffee, no shampoo/conditioner, and beds were very squeaky. I still liked the place, but cannot give it 5 stars.

Wawona stay

This was our first time to Yosemite and staying in Wawona. We are very glad we decided to stay inside the park. It saved a lot of driving time and was nice not to have to wait in line daily to get into the park. We made a stop at Wal-Mart in Fresno before driving up to Wawona. I am very glad we did!! The local tiny little market you can walk to doesn't have much and it's very overpriced. I would suggest doing your grocery shopping before heading into Wawona. (Inside the park in the valley there is a general store that has a good selection and is surprisingly reasonably priced. It blows the local store out of the water as far as price/variety/supplies go.) As far as the beds, we all slept well. They do have some extra blankets in the closest which is a nice touch. The A/C works great and it keeps the place very cool. There are some games and movies provided which was also a nice touch, especially when the internet didn't work well to stream. The kitchen is also nice. It did not have cooking spray so we had to go to the market down the street and pay $6 for some. There is salt, pepper & a few seasonings and that is it. Plan to bring all the basics you will need. There are a handful of pans. One night I made fried rice and there wasn't a lid to cover the pan which made it hard to cook. A smaller pan/lid was there but not big enough for us. ALSO... the internet is very fickle. We would turn on shows at night and it would constantly glitch and shut off. I could not stream shows from my IPAD when we put the kids to bed for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. Due to this issue my husband could not get work done at night on his laptop. We did pay a lot of money per night for this place, so having only 6 white towels total was a disappointment. At the very minimum, they should have an additional 5-6 towels specifically for the hot tub use. We did enjoy the hot tub! It was very nice to relax in there once we got done hiking all day. The property is modern and new and we overall enjoyed our stay.
