Loved our repeat stay at Ned’s quaint, perfectly located cottage. He’s kind and communicative as a host, and his home is full of exactly what we need and touches of whimsy we and our kids really appreciate. Thank you for having us Ned!
We loved staying at this sweet cottage right in the center of Bayside! Hammocks galore, all the creature comforts we needed, and a very communicative manager made our stay easy and comfortable. Would highly recommend!
Another great week in Ned’s lovely home. The location is just perfect, right in the heart of beautiful Bayside. My daughter loved the garden, watching birds and butterflies, and picking berries.
This vacation cottage immediately charmed us with its welcoming front and interior porch. The primary suite on the second floor worked well for us two seniors -- a large room with an abundance of shelves and drawers and closet space and a very comfortable bed. The well equipped kitchen was great for us trying out NYT recipes we looked forward to preparing for our dinners. We enjoyed the friendliness of our neighbors, but best of all was the location -- it was perfect for our car exploring up and down the coast, for restaurants especially in Belfast, and for shopping.
We are regular Bayside Summer folks that needed extra space this year for family, the cottage was a great location, so clean! has every appliance known, a lovely double bedroom on the second floor, a first floor single, and loft bed (for younger folks! The ladder/stair is steep like many of these cottages) The garden was lovely and the front porch was delightful. We loved being able to pick fresh basil and raspberries, hope we left more to ripen!. Ned is an impeccable host and we will rent again should we have an overflowing crowd!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Bayside.
Much of the time we were happy to just relax on the porch. The prolific garden of flowers, herbs, and veggies surrounded us with beauty. In spite of the fact that the cottage is named for a parrot (Sheikie’s Shack), the hummingbirds have made this place theirs. Their almost constant aerial antics kept us entertained.
The kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfortable, and the insulation maintained the temperature at a pleasant level in spite of a few unseasonably warm days.
A great location in a very friendly neighborhood.
We loved our 2 weeks here. The house was comfortable with everything we needed. The galley kitchen was very well equipped, and the library and game selections were fun. We also enjoyed being able to eat the raspberries, tomatoes, Swiss chard and herbs. We would definitely go back again.
A wonderful cottage with an excellent location right in the middle of Bayside. The place was very clean and highly functional. The kids loved sleeping In the loft! We hope to return soon!
Ned made sure we had everything we needed. We enjoyed the location and the ease of checking in and out. The sauna was a big hit after jumping in the chilly bay!
Cute cottage in the heart of Bayside. It was the perfect size for our family of four. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed to prepare meals. The fresh herbs were a great surprise. Much time was spent relaxing on the porch in the rockers and hammock watching the hummingbirds.
Set in an idyllic community on the shores of Penobscot Bay and a few miles from Belfast, this cottage was a delight. The owner was always available and responsive. We plan to return.

About the host
Hosted by Ned Lightner
I have been coming to Bayside Maine for over 60 years and have been active as a boater, gardener and even as an overseer of the village. I had "Sheikie Shack" built as my retirement home and it is a year round home. I still work in nearby Belfast where I run the 2 small public access television stations. I have a lovely partner kathleen and 3 kids, who are pretty much grown up (do they actually ever grow up?). The cottage is named Sheikie Shack in honor of a pet parrot that was a minor celebrity in Bayside for over 50 years.
Why they chose this property
I loved being a kid in Bayside. I spent hours swimming off the dock, playing golf at the Northport golf club and sailing. I always wanted a cottage in the heart of Bayside. Bayside is a neighborly and pedestrian friendly place where people spend time on their porches, so when I had this place built I wanted a nice porch, I wanted it to be handicapped accessible so I can live there in my old age, and I want a cheery and low maintenance home. This place satisfies all those desires and more.
What makes this property unique
It's really close to the main park, beach and dock but it just up the hill enough to not be on a busy street. Because it is a year round insulated home, it is quieter than many of the turn of the century uninsulated cottages, yet it fits in well architecturally in this historic district of the village.
