About this property

Villa in tranquil setting with private pool ideal for families

Are you a nature lover, a sun worshipper or perhaps both? Sheltered amongst trees and surrounded by fields and woods, Cammas de Bas is the ideal spot to escape the hustle, bustle and chaos of every day pressures.

Our south facing villa is on one level accessed from three steps to an entrance porch or three steps up to the spacious private terrace overlooking the poo and gardenl. The open plan lounge and dining area is 22.5 m2 and has two sets of French doors opening on to the terrace. The bathroom is newly refitted with shower, toilet and washbasin, there is an additional toilet. The kitchen has also been recently fitted with all mod cons as well as french doors opening onto the terrace.

The pool is 11m by 5m and set in landscaped gardens, if it get s too hot, there is always the shade of our Indian summer house.

For the nature lovers there are many walks and cycling routes through the rolling countryside. There are breathtaking views of the Pyrenees from the hill above Cammas de Bas. Highlights are wild asparagus picking during March and April, orchids and the arrival of nightingales in early summer. The autumn colours of the vines after harvesting in September are a sight to see. Our hens provide fresh eggs for breakfast throughout the year. Children are welcome to get involved with our two ponies.

For this historian there are numerous castles, abbeys and medieval villages in the vacinity. Some favourites are: Montsegur, Lastours, Puilarens, Queribus and not forgetting Carcassonne with its magnificent fortified Cite!

Why not visit one of the many markets to sample local produce and see the characters selling it or just to sit in a cafe and watch the world go by.

The Malepere wine is one of the latest appelations and is growing in esteem. Some of our favourites are Domaine le Fort from Montreal, Chateau Guilhelm from a nearby village, most producers offer free tasting. Did you know that they were making Blanquette in Limoux 150 years before Champagne was invented? Why not visit a Blanquette producer in Limoux and sample for yourself.

Erholung pur!

Excellent retreat in Aude and base for cycling and wine tasting

My wife and I spent a month in Aude recently. We could not have found a better place. The gite is large, very comfortable and well equipped. Excellent Internet. The owners Mick and Inga are extremely friendly and accommodating. They ensure you are happy and comfortable. Fresh eggs on most mornings too! The gite is about 2 km from the town of Montreal, which is probably one of the nicest in the region. A car is a must. Large grocery stores are nearby. We used the gite as a base to explore Aude, Pyrenees and the Languedoc region. We were able to thoroughly visit the region including Carcassone, Toulouse, Andorra, Albi, etc. In addition, we were in the middle of one of the best wine regions on the planet and did some superb wine tasting. Best of all however, is that the gite is perfectly located for road cycling. The Tour de France rolled through here in 2014. My wife and I are avid cyclists and the variety and quality of roads is amazing. Very few cars, lots of climbing. Tons of fun. A cycling paradise. We really had a great time, and will definitely stay here again next time we are in the region.

Rural Idyll

This was the perfect rural retreat for us. Collected at the airport by very friendly & helpful owners when the car hire didn't work out. Given a lift back in to collect the car once it was sorted :-) The Gite was clean and tidy, recently refurbished & had all the essentials like comfy beds, quiet location and the unexpected - fresh eggs from the hens for breakfast! loved it. Not really warm enough for the pool while we were there - have to go back in the summer. Needed a car to explore the area - Carcassonne was stunning. Nice to have local tips and destinations recommended by Mick & Inga.

Great site, great pool, great location

Mick and Inga were wonderful hosts for our 10 day stay at Cammas de Bas. The Gite is next to their farmhouse and has everything that is needed for a self catering holiday. The pool is fantastic-very refreshing and just the right temperature with plenty of relaxing loungers around. The local village has everything you need and there are large supermarkets within 10 minutes drive plus many daily markets for beautiful fresh produce. The area has lots of great things to do and see for all tastes and ages but we found it hard to tear ourselves away from the pool especially on hot days. Mick and Inga, the cats, chickens and puppy were very welcoming, friendly and helpful at all times.

Idyllic rural spot with wonderful pool

We (two adults and children aged 7 and 3) loved our stay here. The gite is in a lovely rural spot, surrounded by woods and farmland, with a small village a couple of minutes drive away with a supermarket for provisions. We found it very hard to get away much, as the pool is fantastic and the terrace in front of the gite is great for long lunches/evening meals. The gite itself is lovely and spacious with a great big sitting room which would be good if needed on any rainy days. The hosts Inga and Mick are fantastic - relaxed and welcoming without being obtrusive. The children loved collecting eggs and meeting the horses. A great stay.

visited in 2014 and liked it so much we came back

Our hosts, Inga and Mike were very helpful, suggesting trips out and the best local wineries to visit. We still have a few bottles of Domaine le Fort left. The walks from the Gite were charming, through the woods looking for new flowers and birds. In September we could even see snow on the Pyrenees, though our skiing days are over, much happier relaxing by the pool with a glass of red.

About the host

Host profile image
After spending the early years of my life in North London, a family move to the outskirts of London enabled me to develop a love of nature and of the outdoors. Raising a family in a semi rural setting made me realise I am not a townie at all but a country girl at heart. My husband's redundancy in 2004 gave us the ideal opportunity to create our future here in deepest rural Aude, where we spend our spare time bird watching, walking, gardening and loosing ourselves in the pursuits of wild asparagus gathering and spotting nightingales in Spring and early summer.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with Cammas de Bas because of its location, close enough to the village where our youngest went to school, but far enough to feel away from the village. Here our ponies munch grass year round, our dog can laze in the sunshine and we can grow our own vegetables and raise our hens for fresh eggs for breakfast.

What makes this property unique

Within easy reach of Carcassonne, the Pyrenees and Toulouse, we think our villa offers our guests an ideal away from it all holiday with the knowledge that amenities are close by but can have the best of both worlds. A perfect spot for relaxing, watching nature and sampling the delights the region can offer
