About this property

Heart of Hillsdale 1 Bdrm, Work,Cook, Relax Wifi Downtown Apartment Queen Bed

Guests enjoy the downtown location, and close proximity to Hillsdale College. Everything is within walking distance!
Apartment 22 is located inside the main part of the house, upstairs, on the second floor (next to the laundry room, which is available for guest use).

Located in the Heart of Hillsdale, set in a Pre Civil War building, nearly 200 years old, this apartment is a fusion of old and new influences. Furnished with antique, vintage and modern items, with the North light streaming through 7 foot Original windows, the feeling is fresh and cheery.

We are across from city hall, 1/2 a block from the shops, eateries, downtown, and the the bike path, and beautiful Stocks Park, and only 5 blocks from the College.

The most outstanding feature of the apartment is the tall ceilings and 7 foot windows. From this second floor apartment, you get a great birds-eye view of the scene on the street.

Length of Stay Discounts available.

It is a self check in, keyless entry (room code is sent the night before check in). Check in is typically anytime after 4pm, and check out is by 11am. Owner Nancy and her assistant Rebekah both live nearby and can be reached via phone call or text if you need anything. You will find each of our team members (housekeeping included), whether it be in person or via phone, to be friendly and caring.

Formerly the home of Merton Fitzpatrick, one of the founders of the original Republican Party, the house has seen many generations of occupants and is being restored while still operating today. What once was a mansion, is now comprised of 8 full apartments, 6 of the 8 apartment units are reserved for guests. The other two house long time tenants who love and understand Old Houses.
We enjoy the eclectic decor (Which Nancy has collected when she goes antiquing) , and cozy "home away from home" feel this old house has. We hope that you will too!

Cost Effective Accommodations

Nancy communicated well and was available. There was an issue upon check in and it was handled quickly. The description of the property was pretty accurate so I can't say there was any false advertising. The area is safe, though as others have mentioned, it may 'feel' a bit off. It was quiet. If you are looking for something cost effective, this might be your place. For us personally, I don't think I would stay again, but it is not a reflection of the manager or location. It's just a very unique property.

The Property was outstanding, but our link through VRBO to access the property was a complete fail. We were only able to get inside because we happened to encounter the property manager. We had a lovely stay, and highly recommend the property.

Heart of Hillsdale

The location was very close to where I needed to be. The lock on the main entry door to the appartments was broken, so the door was hard to keep closed because it was windy. The apartment was sweet, but in both rooms there are leaks in the ceiling and moldy smell. This did not add to a positive experience.

Dangerous situation

It was not until the morning we were leaving that we realized that, some time when we were both out, that some stranger had been in our apartment. I always parked my car right in front of the house, so it was obvious to anyone observing, when we were in, or not in. There is no question that this occurred. I was there with my daughter to visit Hillsdale College, and we gave nobody our entry code. We are not aware of anything stolen, unless they looked at sensitive tax data on my computer, but it just feels terrible to think that somebody was in our place while we were out. What they did was illegal entry and however they got the code, or were able to get inside, I consider this a dangerous situation. Beware !

Great little spot for me and my 2 golden retrievers to spend the night while visiting friends

Cute and comfortable spot. Very clean, which is not always the case when you rent a pet friendly place. It I ever have an occasion to visit Hillsdale again, I’ll definitely check for availability here first

Good location

This was an old home with character which my family likes. Hot time of year but the place had fans and window AC. I would suggest the owners turn the AC on before the guest arrives. Location to town was great. People outside the north part of the building, probably long term renters a little sketchy, made us a little nervous. Ended up ok. No communication with owner after booking site. I had to email to ask how to get in. After checking in though, Owner was very easy to get ahold of and helpful.

Great 2-Night Stay

My spouse and I enjoyed our stay in this historic house. Sure, it's an old house and shows those signs, but we were expecting that and not looking for something immaculate. The apartment was clean and well equipped, the bed comfortable, and the location in downtown Hillsdale was perfect for us. Nancy communicated well prior to our stay, and we had no reason to contact her during our time at the apartment. We would definitely stay here again.

Graduation trip

It is a cute little apartment on the 2nd floor. We did not use the kitchen to cook, but just spend 4 nights while we stayed busy for the graduation and visiting friends. The location was perfect as we could walk to the church and all things in downtown and to campus. There is a long straight staircase to go upstairs and each steps a bit narrower than nowadays standard. So be aware but I think it’s a building built in 1800’s. I just appreciated the space it offered. Maybe if there were less pillows in the room, it might have been easier to find the place set our bags etc but it’s a very minor thing I noticed (since space is limited somewhat). We enjoyed staying in the apartment!

Hillsdale Visit

Our daughter had a college visit set up at Hillsdale College and we needed a place to stay. The location of this property was very close to campus. There was off street parking as well. The property itself was cozy and the perfect amount of room for my wife, daughter, and I. We really enjoyed our stay.

Clean and convenient

Great value, convenient location, spacious set up. Would stay again. Just a few FYIs - steep stairs to get up/in, Hillsdale's downtown is a bit tricky to navigate and my GPS was laggy so it took two passes to find it, and the daybed is not the most comfortable for sleeping on, but compared to other in town hotel chains that might not be as clean, or staying way out in Coldwater, this was a find!

About the host

Hosted by Nancy

Host profile image
About Owner Nancy: I am an artist, love old houses, interested in antiques, art, current events, politics. I am also an entrepreneur, and have had a number of small businesses. I love animals, rehabbing old houses, reading, working. I am actually a senior citizen, but feel like a 13 year old and relate very well to younger people. Lots of things left in life that I want to do and experience and learn. Favorite Food lately: my own cabbage soup! Favorite Music: Flamenco Guitar, Life motto: Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Nancy has furnished the rooms of our old 1800's house with antiques she finds on her "treasure hunts". You will notice interesting and eclectic gallery walls that she has put together in each apartment, as well as her mosaic tile artistry in the kitchens, some dining table, end tables and mirrors (depending on apartment).

Nancy's assistant Rebekah (Bekah) does most of the customer relations work, reservations, and tech stuff for Nancy. She has worked with Nancy to help with the business since 2019. She will most likely be the one communicating with you here, via phone, and occasionally in person. Rebekah is also an artist, selling her art both online and in Hillsdale, as well as owner of a small local bakery business. She also enjoys old houses, antiques, estate sales, singing and playing guitar, animals, writing (especially poetry) , nature, knitting, pretty much anything arts and culture related. She is a board member of our local Historical Society and also does volunteer work looking after and teaching children (both art and historical living) in her spare time.

Why they chose this property

Located right in the "Heart of Hillsdale" , our downtown location is the perfect place to stay. Everything is within walking distance! Restaurants, quaint stores, banks, coffee shops, entertainment, grocery stores, salons and spas, popular college hang outs, beautiful parks, a biking trail, and more. It is a fun and convenient place to stay.

What makes this property unique

The ideal location and lower prices on nightly stays for your own private apartment can't be beat. The house itself is steeped in history- a pre civil war era home (what was once a mansion) from the 1800s, that has been turned into 8 full apartments. Guests who enjoy history, and quirky old homes with a story, will feel right at home here. Many people say it feels homey and cozy, and enjoy the eclectic decor. Owner Nancy (who is an artist) has also done most of the mosaic tile work inside the main part of house, and in each apartment (especially kitchen back splashes, islands, tables and sometimes mirrors and end tables in the place).
