Lovely

We had a wonderful stay. The space was cute and well appointed. Perfect for the two of us. We had free reign of the farm and enjoyed walking through the fields and hanging out with their chickens. Terri and Marty are excellent hosts. They are very knowledgeable about the area and gave us many recommendations. They are a delight. We would absolutely stay again.

Beautiful getaway

My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights here. We absolutely loved the layout. Looked like a professional designer helped design it! No wasted space, and had a lot of items you may have forgotten. It was close to a trout stream so we enjoyed some fishing. Not too far from town, either. We traveled both days to the dells, and then to Baraboo area and was just about 45-50 minutes to either place. Would highly recommend for a romantic getaway!

Great spot near Spring Green!

My partner and I stayed here so we could spend time in Spring Green, and it was wonderful. Everything was well thought out, clean, and comfortable. Talked to Marty and Terri as we left, and they gave us great recommendations for lunch on our way home. They were super sweet!

Enjoyable Fall stay

This VRBO fit our needs wonderfully, conveniently located near Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin and in the heart of beautiful countryside during prime leaf-viewing season. Martin provided great ideas for dining as well as history of Richland Center and the surrounding area. We enjoyed a long fall evening by the fire pit as well.

Family Hike/Canoe Get-a-way

Wonderfully renovated older upper level of home. 1st bdrm Queen bed, no closet, has chest of drawers. 2nd bdrm no closet or place for clothes, so kept in bag, shares Hide-a-bed(pull-out couch)/sitting area during the day with Kitchenette & table/chairs. Friendly & helpful owner, especially when needed a few extra towels for 3rd day. On hand were cups, dishes, pots/pans, hot plate, hotpot kettle, Coffee kerrig machine w/several k-cups tea, hot cocoa & coffee flavors. Also, had a few snacks available. Provided a medium-sized refrigerator w/Brita pitcher & some extras. Delightfully lighted patio picnic tables/benches w/fire pit & gas grill. Beautiful views out front of home! Situated about 7-10 minutes from town & many great places to grab a bite to eat. Text options best for communication. Lots of magazines for local travel ideas for adults & kids. Loved the variety of hiking trails in Spring Green! Very fun get away, we will be back!

A Little Piece of Heaven

We stayed for a 3 day weekend with our two boys. We spent the time exploring Richland County and the surrounding area. The Suite was everything we could have asked for and more, clean, well kept, and the owners were terrific, really going above and beyond. They went as far as to ensure Disney + was set up for my boys to enjoy movies during our down time, and offering UTV tours of the property and the Wild Hills Winery. Such beautiful country side, and property. We look forward to spending more time there in the future! Thank you so much!

Challenging

Host said ten steps. It’s actually 17. Every trip upstairs. Not accurate — or fair — especially for two 80 year olds. TV is no go; — unless you’re a Best Buy Genius. Martin’s phone didn’t receive calls or texts. Very clean. But no silverware. Or comfortable chairs outdoors.

Best decision we made

I can’t say enough. It was a wonderful experience. We couldn’t have asked for more. It is a beautiful home with a farmhouse feel. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed and more. We were centrally located to everything we wanted to do. My wife is already looking into things to see in the area so we can go back. This is our first non hotel experience and I can’t imagine staying at a hotel ever again.

A perfect country getaway

The space was clean and nicely rehabbed, private entrance to the unit. The owner Marty is super friendly and helpful. Great communication. You should definitely do the tour too. Instead of a microwave there's a toaster oven, seems brand new. I definitely recommend this place.

About the host

Hosted by Martin J Richards

Host profile image
We have been married over 30 years, have 3 adult children, raised 5 foreign exchange students, and have had multiple careers-Marty has done real estate/insurance sales, retirement education, and relationship management, and now is the tourism director for Richland county. Teri has been a Labor & Delivery nurse, a professional photographer, and has been a flight attendant with Southwest Airlines for 5 years. We love travel-domestic and international and have stayed in many guest homes around the world. We have recently remodeled some unused space in our farmhouse so we can open our home to guests. We started our agri-tourism business 3 years ago-doing guided tours at farms, cheese factories, wineries, and breweries. We love good food, sustainable living, and meeting new people. We have also remodeled our downstairs during the Covid year and have 2 rental spaces a mile down the road.

Why they chose this property

Our grandsons are the 5th generation on this family farm and we have lived in this home over 26 years. The home was built in 1929, during the Great Depression. It is a knock-off Sears & Roebuck bungalow/craftsman-style home. We have restored the home to its original glory and plan to eventually rent the whole home at some point. The home was constructed by 2 men who lived on the farm in the chicken coop. They received room & board with Great Grandma Alta feeding them during construction. The cost was around $2000 and the white & red oak used in the trim/flooring was actually harvested from the farm property. Marty's mom Alice lives next door and Marty's sister-Annette also lives next door-truly a family farm. At one time Willow Valley Farms milked over 200 registered holsteins. They discontinued milking in the late '80s. The family is hospitable and gracious. They will leave guests alone and are quiet and probably the most humble people anywhere-good Wisconsin folk. The home is surrounded by hills, forests, fields, and a Class A Trout stream in the heart of the beautiful Driftless Area. There is a 2 lane state highway in front of the home with quick access to Richland Center. Local attraction-Elephant Trunk rock is 1 mile away. The Ithaca (unincorporated) community is welcoming and warm.

We had over 600 square feet upstairs that we were not using anymore and decided to make the space into a guest suite. The remodeling was done in the spring of 2019 and the space has been completely renovated. The bathroom is all new construction.

We have completed the renovation of our downstairs and we love to show it off to our guests! We have tried to stay true to the Arts & Crafts movement and have put a lot of time and attention into details like our oak trim, quartz countertops, stain glass windows, wood floors, gas fireplace, and sauna.

What makes this property unique

This space is a perfect little suite for an individual or a couple traveling workers. The patio is yours to use as well-we want you to enjoy using the grill, fire pit, farm tables, and bistro lights. We have a great expanse of sky with no light pollution-perfect to see the stars. We are very well-connected to the community and love good hospitality. As parents, grandparents and international host parents-we love having people in our home. We love hospitality so much, we started an agri-tourism business, Ridge & Valley Tours, and designed our remodeled suite with guests in mind. We have stayed in well over 40+ guest accommodations around the world (on another platform) and as a flight attendant, we have stayed in some of the best corporate hotels in every major domestic city. We can give you as much privacy as you want. We welcome dogs that are well-behaved and well-trained. You can exercise them off-leash with a hike behind the farm. We do have a dog-a 50 pound Plott hound named Bailey. She is loveable and sweet.
