Guava House is an absolute piece of paradise. If you are keen on visiting Sri Lanka's inland activites, this is a great base and a magnificent environment. The housekeepers Jeyanthi and Suddharma are super-warm and welcoming. The nature around the house, the jungle, the pool, the house; everything is simply magical. You won't want to leave the house! Great for contemplation and refection.

Amazing property
We loved our stay at the Guava House. The property is breathtaking and the hosts and their housekeepers were very attentive. The food was simply amazing, some of the best we had during our stay. In Sri Lanka The property is truly isolated and therefore quite remote. If this is what you are after then this property can't be beaten. My daughters also loved the house's friendly dog, Molly. Thank you Guava House the memories will stray with us for ever.

A stunning jungle retreat
A wonderful tropical house beautifully situated amongst the treetops with wonderful views. It's a great spot to relax and escape to nature. In sunshine it's great, and in tropical rain it's even better!
Jayanthi and Sudharma were so kind and looked after us very well and Shaunagh, Jane and Ajita arranged everything super efficiently - thanks to everyone.

A wonderful escape from reality!
We stayed at this wonderful house with a large group of friends over New Year - we all loved it. The property is truly beautiful and the location as idyllic as it gets. If you are after simplicity, peace and beauty then this is the place for you. Far off the beaten track you feel very removed from the 'real world' - after days spent swimming, hiking, doing yoga, reading (and much staring at the beautiful view) we left feeling totally re-energised. Can recommend!

A uniquely unforgettable experience
A beautiful, secluded little hide out where you can just completely unwind and relax. Loved the ambience of the early morning misty mountains and the amazing food cooked by jeyanthy. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a relaxing break from the hectic hustle and bustle of every day life. Thank you Shaunagh for letting us stay in your beautiful home.

Glorious architecture and unforgettable food
We spent 3 wonderful days at Guava House - the house and its surroundings were so impressive, we switched off the internet during our stay and made full use of the space for cooking, reading and relaxing. The pool was also fantastic for a quick cool-off on those hot days and energising morning swims.
The house was a marvellous find: off the beaten track location, great setting and totally authentic. The local village of Hemathagama is charming and has a few shops for basic supplies. We also ventured into some of the bigger local towns to buy a few extra luxuries and ingredients.
Jeyanthi the cook, won our hearts with some of the best food we experienced in Sri Lanka. We looked forward to every meal, enjoying fresh fruits, health salads and a fantastic range of curries (The okra dish and brinjal proved to be our recurring favourites!)
There were just 2 of us but we could easily imagine coming back and filling the house and separate dwellings with lots of friends and family - there are plenty of spaces and areas conducive to different activities (yoga, reading, swimming, cooking, exploring etc etc).
Thoroughly enjoyed our time here and we look forward to coming back someday!

an idyllic retreat in the country
I spent a wonderful four days at Guava House over new year 2014. We went en famille - seven people - and found ourselves spread over not just the house itself, walking straight out of the kitchen into the swimming pool, abut also in the two beautiful little cottages tucked into different corners of the estate.
The house sits at the summit of a rubber plantation, up in the treetops, with glimpses through the leaves of the mountains above and the rice paddies below. At night its noisy with every type of creature you can imagine.
We spent our time doing as little as possible, except walking into the local village, Hematagama, with its market (and an excellent barber...) and going for walks around the countryside lanes, finishing up at the hopper stand at the end of the lane for egg hoppers at sunset.
Jayanthi, the cook rustled up superb meals at our request, and looked after the place for us.
This is a wonderful place to go - quiet, and completely off the beaten track, and the closest you'll get to seeing what the countryside of the Sri Lankan hill country is really like.

Absolute heaven.
The most stunning property I have ever stayed in. Simplicity combined with luxury, with great attention to detail. Set among the treetops, the views are stunning. There is a veranda right around the house, providing plenty of quiet places for private meditation or contemplation. Cooking in the kitchen is bliss, looking out to the hills beyond. Absolute heaven.

About the host
Hosted by Shaunagh
I grew up in England, lived the early part of my married life in London and in 1999 my husband and I moved to Sri Lanka with our two children. We have lived in Sri Lanka since then and my architect husband built our dream house in 2008. I am a yoga teacher and welcome any yogis and other nature lovers to our home.
Why they chose this property
When we first saw our plot the land we were taken at how very magical and holistic the area was, with sleeping rubber trees, 360 degree views of surrounding mountainous range, with Bible Rock protecting it at a distance. My husband dreamed of creating a special retreat for our family and friends, to be more in tune with nature and all it’s surroundings. A place to escape to, from all of the busy pressures of city life. In 2005 we bought the land and by Dec 2008 the house was complete.
What makes this property unique
The sense of staying at Guava House is that of simple ‘open-plan’ living and kitchen area, open to the breezes and extensive views that the terrace and infinity pool have to offer. It is a thoroughly peaceful environment in which to chill, relax and regain a perspective on what is important in life. It’s a truly wonderful place to just do nothing and spend time talking, discussing and contemplating. Two, separate thatched chalets, built into the side of the sloping terrain add an extra dimension of privacy and peaceful relaxation and can accommodate a further four guests in addition to the three bedrooms in the main house. An open-plan first floor area can be used for a variety of communal uses including additional sleeping area, yoga, exercise classes and games area.
