About this property

Two Rooms & mini-kitchen in Classic Beach House - 300 steps to the Beach

The space sleeps 4-6 with a queen-sized tempurpedic mattress in a window space with a privacy curtain and trundle bed in the downstairs of the house, a bunk bed set in a private bedroom. In the main room there is a mini-kitchen with a fridge, a single induction cooktop, a toaster oven, microwave, and sink. An outdoor kitchen, shower and hottub, sometimes shared with other guests, are a few steps outside. A driftwood gate leads out to the beach. An extra foam mattress on the floor is available upon request. The space includes a microwave and toaster oven and a space refrigerator but not a full kitchen. Three other cabins are available to rent with this space if you need extra beds. Contact the owner for more information.

2025 NOTE: After 18 years of renting the whole house, the owner, who manages and maintains the property and is a Volunteer Firefighter in Stinson Beach, moved into the upstairs of the house and now rents two rooms and the bath downstairs as well as separate cabins (available to rent in addition). If the owner is on site, he is available to assist If things come up. Other guests may be staying in cabins on the property and therefore might share the hot tub spa, outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen spaces.

This a unique property on a nice quarter-acre of land that melds sweetly into the woods of the neighboring national park lands. Unlike many houses at Stinson, neighboring houses are on one fence only, so the place is quite private and expansive. The house is in its own wonderful watershed, almost a little micro-climate, yet only 300 yards from the 3 mile sandy beach. It's a 5-minute walk to the town's three restaurants, the library, market and boutiques.

A solar array and back-up battery allow the house to have partial electricity for several days in the event of power outages.

During the summer and holiday periods we rent by the week. Other times we will rent weekends, with a two night minimum.

For spring, summer and fall getaways and all year. With a wonderful indoor/outdoor feel, you can walk out French doors onto a beautiful Italian tile walkway around two sides of the house and onto the flagstone patio that leads to the hot tub.

Radiant heated tiled floors downstairs,

The house has some connection to Marin County Rock and Roll bands and was said to be a beach house for the Steve Miller Band at one time. The late Grateful Dead songwriter Robert Hunter stayed in the house as a guest. The Chris Robinson brotherhood shot photos for one of their albums on the property in recent years.

The house is located next to a lovely fresh water creek teeming with native plants and visited by wildlife, including deer, foxes, bats, ducks, grebes, egrets, hawks, warblers, flycatchers and many others. In March of 2009 we witnessed a 20' steelhead trout spawning below our dining room window! During most of the year, deer are nearby and visit often. In the late spring, we see their fawns running around.

The house borders the north end of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Stinson Beach Park so it feels like you are on a very large piece of land. At night, a private back gate and path to the Stinson Beach Park parking lot allows you to slip out to the beach without passing neighbor houses.

The grassy and forested landscape allows for great exploring with children and quiet contemplative moments in nature.

Outside, you are right on the edge of the native willow forest with lovely views to the mountain and the waves. We often see deer, hawks and other wildlife just below. We have chairs to seat up to 10 people outside if you want to entertain.

Walk 300 yards to beach or 500 to the town. Two great restaurants, take-out pizza at Parkside, and the entire GGNRA (National Park) beach to yourself after the park closes at sunset or before it opens at 9 in the morning. We have mint and apples growing on the property.

Antiques and art that were collected over a span of more than 30 years are found in every room. It's an interesting place, inside and out, for a beach rental . It is, however, rather rustic.

We do not have pets and do not wish to have visitors bring pets on the property.

The land has enough space outside for an event tent for weddings and other gatherings up top 30 people (additional rates apply and owner approval required).

Great location near Stinson Beach!

Very easy access to the beach. Great hot tub, delicious apples, very responsive host. The unheated back patio was quite chilly in November. Did not end up having anyone stay out there. Would come again!

Lovely spot

We had a lovely time in this quirky little beachside house. My favorite things were the giant shells in the main bedroom.

Exceptional location and beautiful property

We enjoyed this property with our extended family, including kids. The location can’t be beat and the kids had a great time playing in the creek when not at the beach. The kitchen is well stocked and we had everything we needed. Great place to stay!

We will definitely try to stay there again!

Rustic indeed but perfect for us. Big enough for nine of us to have privacy. The hot tub was awesome. Walk one way to the beach in ten minutes, walk the other way for 15 and you're in town.

It's all about the beach

Very rustic but offers a lot of sleeping options with 2 nice bedrooms and other possibilities. Owner was very prompt to communicate and even let us in early but we had to wait on the cleaners. The place could really use some deep cleaning in kitchen. bathrooms and drawers. The location to the beach was fantastic. We enjoyed the campfire one night. Private in spite of populated street.

Summer beach stay

We had an amazing time. The check in process was very easy. Working with the owner was easy and seamless, easy to communicate with. The house is so close to the beach. The kitchen was well stocked. We even had a visit from some deer in the morning.

Peaceful and charming retreat

I loved the creek and informal garden around the house, and the secret hidden gate and path to the beach. The house is very private, with views of the ocean from the second floor, where the main living areas are located. The house is charming and attractive. The master bedroom and bathroom are perfect, and the kitchen well equipped. There are additional bedrooms on the lower floor, a bit mustier, as is typical near the ocean. I would have loved to spend more time than the single week we had here.

Family Reunion

Excellent location, steps from the beach and downtown shops and restaurants. Very well equipped with everything we needed. Love the outdoor shower and hot tub after time at the beach. Property is as described and as it looks in the pictures. Comfortable for 10 of us, nice big table for meals, lots of living room seating, large deck, great BBQ. Communication with Charles was very easy and he was available if we needed him. This was our second stay and we hope to return again.

Rustic beach house

Beautiful rustic property. Beach right through the trees. Not your place if seeking ultra modern property. House is big, lots of sleeping areas. Lots of cool artwork. The grounds are beautiful, nature has been given the chance to run wild. Local restaurant was excellent. Wood-stove and hot tub were great.

Family New Year Beach Stay

While it rained a lot - we appreciated the owners tip to bring rain boots. Those came in very hand. There were plenty of space heaters and blankets to keep everyone warm- even those in the outside rooms. We enjoyed long walks on the beach, late nights or early mornings in the hot tub and just listening to the surf at night. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and we even tried out the professional waffle maker. Very fun. Hope to come back again.

Easy beach access, cozy bedding

3-bedroom house with a couple of extra cottage-like rooms and a hottub around the side. I do recommend reading the house guide about which heaters to use BEFORE you turn any on, so you don't make our mistake and blow a fuse (which was easily fixed with a call to the owner, who was easily accessible). Best part: the cozy, comfortable quilts on the beds got rave reviews from many members of our party. The house is by a creek, so has a natural-feeling, not manicured style of yard.

Great location, beautiful grounds , needs attention.

*** Please note , this review is for a stay 2 years ago. **** I hesitated to write this review but 2 years and no new reviews makes me wonder if other family are disappointed too. This is a big house , in a great location with lovely grounds . However the house and grounds were in a poor state of repair and cleanliness. If you care about the details , this might not be the best house for you.

Falling apart / property needs major repair

No insulation so humidity is terrible, musty, moldy water damage We could not use parts of the home (black widows found in “newly cleaned sheets”) so we didn’t stay in 2 bedrooms Many things about the home are unfortunately dangerous - to guest health and safety. Termites, black widows, poor insulation leading to significant moisture, fire risk of heater falling out of wall and also lead paint exposure from this hole in the wall, splinters in the floor the house may have been cleaned/sanitized but it had not been deep cleaned We expected a rustic beach home but also expected to be comfortable for a few days, particularly at the rate

We really loved our stay at Creekside Stinson!

Great location - 2 blocks from Downtown, 1 block from the beach. The layout of the home is great with kitchen, dinning and living room on top floor and 2-BRs and family room on the ground floor. The family room has sleeping nooks which was nice. It worked out well for us. Hot tub is large and clean and was hot when we arrived. Most homes on the street are one level so you can see the ocean from the top floor windows and deck. The nature preserve claim is the real deal - the very first thing I saw was a doe and a fawn sleeping under the stairs. The home is what I'd call rustic and as the owners have mentioned in other reviews they use the home and like it that way. It's priced accordingly and a good value IMO. Not everyone can drop $4k/night for a pristine compound! Overall it was a really great stay and we would stay there again.

Utterly relaxing

We booked this house for a Thanksgiving getaway and then Covid interrupted our plans. Still, my husband and I had a totally relaxing stay at Charles's beach cabin. We have been renting in West Marin for many, many years and have stayed in fancier places where the furnishings looked great but weren't actually comfortable, with no reading lights or books or human touches. In contrast this place has a lot of personality--with books and art, several places to curl up and read, heated floors in the bathroom and ground floor (an especially nice feature), an efficient wood stove, all the cooking implements you might need, and comfy beds (though I was glad I had brought my own pillows). It may be a bit rustic for some, but we loved being so close to the beach--waves lulled us to sleep and we could gaze at the breakers while drinking our morning coffee. We live just over the hill in Sausalito and to wake up in one of our favorite places was just delightful.

A delightful stay at Stinson

Charles is a wonderful, attentive host who helped make our Christmas at Stinson special. The house is full of everything you need. There was even a card table for our Christmas puzzle and a double waffle iron that looked just like the one my husband got as a present! The house is not your standard recently remodeled beauty. Rather its charm lies in the funky bits and pieces that put it together. We were five adults and found it spacious with plenty of sheets and towels as well as a small casita off the porch with an extra bed and toilet for my brother to have his own space. The view of the ocean from the balcony was a treat. We were lucky that the government was shut down and the adjacent parking lot was closed. We didn't have to share the view with anyone. Thank you, Charles, for providing such a great retreat and good service.

Just what we needed

Charles provides an amazing home and great communication as a host. The home was the perfect balance between character and comfort that we were looking for on this trip. The property is a quick walk to the beach and town. The home provided great space for multiple friends and family; it offers privacy for those that want it as well as place to socialize. The private trail to the beach was a hit with our crew. There were deer, including a beautiful buck, every day. You can see the ocean from the deck as well as the kitchen table. We truly enjoyed this unique property and can't recommend it enough. We are already planning another get together here in the years to come.

A little patch of wilderness so close to the beach

This is a very special location because it is extremely close to the beach (there's even a secret path to the Stinson Beach parking lot behind the hot tub), but the house is also surrounded by a decent amount of wild land, so it feels more secluded. My children loved picking apples from the huge apple tree out front, and seeing the deer that also came to enjoy some apples. The house is also within a half mile of both the Matt Davis and Dipsea trailheads.

Great location on a great beach!

My wife and I stayed at the house for a month and had a wonderful time. Aside from the amazing location on Stinson Beach, the house was clean and comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. The house was also big enough so my wife and I had enough room to set up remote offices during our stay. The strong Wi-Fi also helped. Charles was a very responsive host and made sure we had all the amenities we needed to enjoy our stay. We had a memorable vacation.

What a stellar get away!

My group and I can't say enough great things about Charles and his property! It was the perfect fit for us. The location is spectacular. Just a few walks from the beach + shops + town. If you looked off the balcony or got a view from the master bedroom you can watch the waves. The beds were super comfy, sheets & towels smelled fresh and clean. The two bedrooms that were off the main property outside were great for the light sleepers. The number of bathrooms (2 full and 2 half) made it so easy for everyone to have the personal space they needed. The style of the home was a very eclectic cabin vibe which I personally loved. The backyard/front yard with the creek running through it was an oasis to walk through. The hot tub was just what we needed and the outdoor shower was a beautiful jungle vibe after the hot tub that we had no idea we needed but thoroughly enjoyed. Charles was super easy to connect with to ask any questions that arose. He also was very relaxed in letting us have an early arrival + late checkout. I would recommend this house and Charles as a host any day and we will hopefully be coming back again :)

About the host

Hosted by Charles Higgins

Host profile image
Born and raised in San Francisco, Charles has been watching birds and swimming at Stinson Beach since 1970. From 2007 to mid 2012, he worked in Muir Beach as the director of Slide Ranch, an environmental education and farm-based food education program for urban children. His wife and he have two boys, born in 2001 and 2005. As a family, they spend weekends and summer weeks at the house. The family loves it there and enjoy sharing it with people who appreciate its unique beauty and serenity. In 2021, Charles joined the Stinson Beach Fire Department as a volunteer. With twice monthly drills and other trainings, Charles lives part-time across the creek from the main house in a small cabin.

Why they chose this property

This is a stunning spot in Northern California. Nature, the beach, nice restaurants, many miles of park lands to explore. This is the only property close to the beach that also has wild lands and significant open space next to the house (most beach lots are smaller and sandier - ours is grassy). The property has a nice forest of trees that both provide privacy and a calming sense of nature.

What makes this property unique

This is the right place for a family that enjoys being in nature. The house is on a wildlife corridor along a fresh water creek amidst wonderful native willow forests, wild flowers and grassy meadows. It feels special and secluded, yet it's a short walk to town for an ice cream, game of basketball or dinner.
