About this property

Beautiful C17th Cottage - pet-friendly, near Lake District, idyllic village.

Cumberland Cottage is a beautifully presented, pet friendly, property located in the heart of the tranquil Cumbrian village of Orton. Built in 1632 the cottage is one of the oldest properties in the village. Formerly part of the Duke of Cumberland Inn and more recently the village store and post office, Cumberland Cottage was lovingly renovated in 2012 to provide well equipped, contemporary holiday accommodation of a very high standard.

Orton is a hidden gem, once described by Wainwright as one of Westmorland's loveliest villages, it lies on the Coast to Coat walk and is surrounded by breath-taking scenery. Just 2 miles from the M6, it has an enviable location nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks and approximately 12 miles from the Cumbrian towns of Kendal, Sedbergh, Appleby and Penrith.

Cumberland cottage is an ideal base for couples wanting to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounding area by foot, visit nearby towns, or venture into the National Parks. You will find maps, walking guides and numerous leaflets in the cottage to help you plan your stay. We also have a detailed Cottage Information File and a Comment's Book brimming with positive reviews from previous guests, many of whom have taken the time to recommend their favourite places to visit or eat out.

On your arrival you will find a tea tray with biscuits or a homemade cake and a fresh pint of milk in the fridge. We always ensure that the cottage has a starter supply of essential times such as washing up liquid, toilet rolls, kitchen paper, tin foil, cling film, hand soap and salt & pepper.

One well behaved dog for a small extra charge. All we ask is that it is not allowed on the furniture or left unattended in the the property without our prior consent.

The cottage adjoins our own house and we are only too happy for guests to pop over to see us if they have any queries or require any further information. Equally we realise that many guests value their own privacy and we always ensure that we do not intrude unnecessarily.

Cosy and comfortable

We really enjoyed the property, which is very nicely renovated while retaining traditional features, the friendliness of the local village (pub, village stores and chocolate shop!) and the convenience of reach for the Eastern Lake District. Definitely a cottage to return to.

Cosy cottage in a great location

The cottage is immaculate with everything you need for a very comfortable stay.A nice welcoming message from Gill prior to our stay and on our arrival we found milk, tea, proper coffee (not sachets!) and biscuits which we appreciated after our drive. We stayed for 3 nights over New Year. The weather was awful so we didn't do the walks we had planned but we were warm and cosy in the cottage and thought it was a great spot to welcome in the new year. Orton is a lovely village and we would love to return and explore the surounding area.

Best of both worlds...

The cottage is superbly located to explore both the Lake District NP and the Pennines. The village of Orton is lovely and has a pub (although not dog friendly) and a local shop. The cottage is comfortable and well equipped for all seasons. We have had a lovely stay, despite the weather. The host, Gill, has been excellent and has been on hand to answer questions and queries. Thank you for a lovely week away.

Excellent accomodation

What a great place to spend a week, a lovely little cottage containing everything needed for a holiday stay. Really friendly and helpful hosts next door, all set in a charming peaceful village. Easy access to the Dales and the Lake District. Felt really at home, can't wait to return. Great to be greeted with a tea tray and lemon drizzle cake, yummy! It was a wrench to leave it all and return to normality after an idyllic stay.

Everything you need for a short break.

Great location, close to the M6 but in a picturesque setting with friendly locals. The cottage is small but doesn't feel cramped, sympathetically converted, and equipped with everything you need for a home away from home. Owner Gill lives next door and manages to balance being helpful and on hand while still respecting her guests' privacy. I'd definitely return.

Small but perfectly formed

Had a lovely, peaceful stay in Cumberland Cottage. It's well equipped with everything you need for a short break. The lemon drizzle cake was a nice treat when we arrived. The village of Orton is a great base for exploring both the Lakes and Dales but don't over look the lovely walks right from the Cottages doorstep.

Home from home, a beautiful cottage in a fantastic location

The moment we arrived at the cottage we felt welcome and at home. Gill met us as we arrived and had left a delicious lemon cake for us along with milk tea bags and other essentials. The cottage itself is immaculate and cosy, absolutely ideal for us and our little dog. It is ideally situated in a village with a shop and pub (also a chocolate factory with cafe!) There are endless places to visit as the cottage is near to the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. A bonus for us was also the Farmers Market, held in the village, we just had to walk out of our front door to buy fresh local produce. Not sure how often the market is held. All in all we have had a wonderful holiday and came home feeling rested and revived, hope we will be able to visit again

Cumberland Cottage, Orton

We stayed at Cumberland Cottage for a week from the 13th to the 20th July 2018. Once we arrived in Orton we found the cottage easily from the owners emailed directions and were pleased that it was in a peaceful location. When we arrived at the cottage and opened the door we were taken aback, it was even better in real life than in the photographs. A nice touch was the tea, milk and lemon drizzle cake to die for that greeted us after a tiring journey from Cornwall. The open plan downstairs was plenty spacious enough for the two of us, spotlessly clean and looked freshly decorated. The kitchen area had all the utensils and pots and pans that we needed when we stayed in and cooked main meals. Upstairs was just as spacious and clean with a very comfortable bed and sufficient storage space for our belongings. The toilet / wet room also brought no complaints from me. My wife, who is very particular about hygiene had absolutely no qualms about using it at all. There was a comprehensive welcome pack explaining about the cottage, emergency doctor details etc, local pubs, several local walks and a bit about the history of the cottage. The owners, Gill and Adam, lived next door and were always very friendly when we saw them and more than happy to answer any queries about local places to go. Although we did a small shop at a supermarket, the village itself had a relatively small shop that supplied all our needs for food and drink that we needed. Just across the road was Kennedys Chocolate Shop and Coffee House which is well worth a visit. The local pub, The George Hotel, was friendly with good pub grub on offer. For more upmarket food there are several local pubs within a four to seven mile radius. Although we managed a couple of Fell walks, a drive to Beatrix Potter's house and a trip on an Ullswater steamer, our week was just too short to do the area justice. We shall certainly be returning to the area and staying in Cumberland Cottage again, we really enjoyed it Thank you. Alan and Freda. Cornwall.

A little gem of a cottage in a beautiful village.

We arrived to a warm welcome from Gill and Adam and a lovely homemade lemon drizzle cake as well as basic store cupboard essentials. The cottage is beautifully kept and well equipped. It was in the middle of the heatwave so we had breakfast outside on the little patio whilst watching the village go by. It kept the sun til late in the evening so after a busy day, a well earned glass of pinot was enjoyed. We visited the chocolate factory and what a delight that was :-) The village is situated to enjoy both the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales and we did both during our stay. We didnt want to leave but will be booking again in Autumn to see the Lakes in a different season. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. It was cosy and a little retreat from the madness we all know as life. See you again Cumberland Cottage you were simply amazing!!!

About the host

Host profile image
My name is Gill Abram and I am originally from Bolton. I moved to Cumbria over 10 years ago to work in Kendal. I often visited the charming and unspoilt village of Orton and never dreamt that one day we'd would be lucky enough to live here!

Why they chose this property

In 2009 my partner and I took on the massive project of renovating one of the oldest properties in Orton into a family home.

As our home began to emerge from the rubble and dust we struck upon the idea of turning the adjoining granny flat into a luxurious holiday cottage. We felt that Orton was ideally placed for exploring the Lakes District and Yorkshire Dales yet provided a peaceful alternative to the more commercial villages & towns of the Lakes. The local pub, well stocked village shop and chocolate shop all combine to ensure that visitors are well catered for and the numerous idyllic walks from the doorstep make it a dog owners paradise! My Labradoodle, Bramble, definitely enjoys living here!

What makes this property unique

Location, location location! Not only is Cumberland Cottage a well equipped, modern and beautifully restored holiday cottage, it boasts the perfect location in the centre of the quaint and peaceful Yorkshire Dales village of Orton. Surrounding the village you will find a special landscape of immense beauty and character, yet a couple of miles down the road you will enter England's largest National Park, The Lake District, home to Scafell Pike - its highest mountain, Wastwater - its deepest lake and thriving communities like Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere.
