About this property

The Swallows, 2 bedroom Dorset Cottage set on working farm near the Dorset Coast

The Swallows is one of seven holiday cottages that form Character Farm Cottages and is situated on our working farm 5 miles to the west of Weymouth and a stones throw from the stunning Chesil Beach and Jurassic coastline. The cottage sleeps 4 and has 2 upstairs bedrooms, one a double and the other a twin. The cottage has recently been renovated but has maintained a "cosy cottage feel" with exposed beams and an open log fire. The kitchen is well equipped and has a table which sits 4 for sociable meals together. The sitting room has a sofa and 2 armchairs to relax in front of the log fire or watching TV/DVD. It has French windows leading out onto the patio and garden. Free wifi is provided for you to keep in touch with the outside world! The upstairs bathroom has a bath and shower head attachment.
The Swallows has a decent size enclosed garden with a south facing patio and garden furniture to enjoy a barbeque or evening drinks as you watch the sunset. The garden leads onto our own farmland from which you can join the Coastal Footpath and numerous shorter walks. There is plenty of parking beside the cottage and we are dog friendly (max 2).
There is a games room a short distance away from the cottage in the Old Stables which has a table tennis, table football and a good selection of paperbacks for you to borrow. It also has laundry facilities.
We try to stick to weekly breaks running Friday to Friday and short breaks out of season - a 3 night break running Friday to Monday and a 4 night break running Monday to Friday. However we can be flexible if you have different requirements.

The Swallows

We arrived on a rather wet Monday in the lovely hamlet of Langton Herring. The cottage was lovely with everything we needed for a few days break. We did some lovely walks in the area and had easy access to both Portland and Weymouth. A lovely place to stay. Definitely recommend it for someone looking for peace and quiet.

Fab stay in Langton Herring!

This is a fab cottage to stay in - firstly the cottage is a good size, very clean and has all the amenities you will need for a week or so away. The setting is marvellous and there are local walks right on your doorstep. Very quiet location with great surrounding countryside. Location is great too as a short drive from Weymouth, West Bay and Lyme Regis as well as towns of Dorchester, Bridport etc. Would highly recommend!

Peaceful location

Lovely cottage in quiet setting. Easy access to lots of beautiful towns and interesting places. We had never been to the area before but would certainly return in future and would happily return to the cottage.

Our stay at the swallows.: W

It was a quiet central location giving us easy access to many of the local restaurants and beaches. We would highly recommend The Kings Arms and a little further afield Clavells at Kimmeridge. We would recommend Weymouth.....lovely sandy beach which had a place for our dogs to run free up by the pavilion. We would certainly go again.

Week in June

We had a lovely week staying at the Swallows. Colin replied to my emails really quickly before we went and provided some really handy information. The cottage is lovely and has everything you need and is in a really quiet area. We used the Weymouth Park and Ride to find our bearings on the first day and there was lots to do in the area. We did Nothe Fort, Chesil Beach and spent a day in Dorchester going round the museums there. I loved the Teddy Bear museum.

Fabulous

Beautiful cottage,in quiet location close to the coast path. The cottage was well equipped, very clean and cosy and we all enjoyed our stay. Would recommend and go again. Local pub a little disappointing as it was closed Saturday night due to bad weather, that was before the snow! We did eat there later in the week and the food was very good. The Kings Arms a little further away had great staff, service and excellent food especially the Sunday roast. Booking the cottage easy and quick response to any questions we had.Well done and thank you.

Great location, lovely sweet house. Very cosy and warm and got everything you need.

Went in Nov with my three year old, dog and hubby. Three year old and dog loved the little garden and the walks from the door were great. Three year old loved playing on the tractor left in farm near the baby calves too. The house is simple and cosy - lovely real fire in the living room. Great location for doing stuff. Corfe Castle was a real highlight day out. Loved it! A proper relaxing yet busy 10 days. Fun had by all.

The Swallows

The cottage matched the property description perfectly. It was immaculate and well maintained and in a quiet location, with views across the valley to the Hardy monument. Comfortable beds with immaculate bedding. Only a short drive, or an uphill walk, to the local pub which served good food. The wifi password could have been a little more obvious, and details of appliances and heating controls would be nice, but we worked all that out quite quickly. We would recommend this cottage, and intend to return.

Character Farm Cottages is owned by my wife Jane and her parents Rob and Ann Mayo and they have been in the self catering business for over 30 years. Many of our guests come several times a year and we now have in some cases 3 generations of families enjoying our cottages! In addition Jane and Rob run the family farm which is mixed and consists of dairy, arable and beef. Many of our guests enjoy wandering the many footpaths on the farm, visiting the dairy and helping feed the young calves. I am a long haul pilot for British Airways and when at home, help out with the farm and keeping the cottages up together. I also keep our own website up and running and do all the bookings and correspondence.
We do hope you choose to visit and enjoy our wonderful part of West Dorset!

What makes this property unique

The Swallows is one of 7 cottages which make up Character Farm Cottages and is on the edge of the small village of Langton Herring, 3 miles from the seaside town of Weymouth. From the cottage you can walk a short distance to the Fleet and Chesil Beach which forms part of the famous Jurassic Coast recently featured in the highly popular TV series "Broadchurch". We farm most of the land surrounding the Swallows and we are always very happy to show guests around the dairy to see the cows being milked. Youngsters also like to lend a hand feeding the baby calves! Langton Herring has its own pub called the Elm Tree Inn which is a short walk from the cottage. In the next door village, Portesham you will find the Kings Arms which we highly recommend.
Weymouth is popular for its lovely sandy beach and shallow waters. It also has other attractions such as Sea Life Center, Nothe Fort, Brewers Quay, karting and a multiplex cinema. Nearby Dorchester has a good selection of restaurants at the newly opened Brewers Square such as Nandos, Waggamamas, Carluccios and Cote.
Dorset is also home to many stunning country houses and gardens, the Tank Museum at Bovington, Monkey World, and many fantastic country pubs.
