About this property

Circe & Hare Lodge, a magical 3 BR Romantic Log Cabin Getaway with Hot Tub

Once inside this traditional log cabin, you'll find modern conveniences with rustic charm. A tall stone fireplace is set within the middle of the living room, towering along the wooden stairs to the second floor. The living room/reading area both enjoy views of the fireplace. The house boasts an open, cozy floor plan. The kitchen/eating area opens out to the natural deck overlooking the hillside/river & distant views of mountain tops. Bathroom hosts updated washer/dryer facilities & is located on the first floor. The second floor features 3 bedrooms. Open the sliding barn doors at the top of the stairs into the romantic master bedroom, with antique factory glass windows overlooking the downstairs & fireplace. A big, luxurious bed offers views through the door onto a balcony overlooking the yard/distant mountains. There is nothing quite like a Vermont starry night sky viewed from your bedroom balcony! A large walk-in closet is found at the top of the stairs - additional linens & blankets are found here, as well as plenty of storage space for luggage & hanging clothing. The other cozy bedrooms are located on the other side of the hall, one featuring raw- edge wooden headboard & antique dresser for storage, and the other, with log-cabin siding, rocking chair & closet.

House Rules:

Our mission is to help guests create wonderful memories here! For us to do so, we ask that you follow our 'House Rules' & confirm you've reviewed them UPON BOOKING.

This is to ensure that if there's any reason the House Rules cannot be followed, you'll have the option of canceling the booking penalty-free. Feel free to ask any questions - we are all about the guest experience, and want you to be comfortable with our policies. Thank you in advance & we truly appreciate your cooperation!

- Our 'Rental Agreement' is available here, for guests to view prior to booking, however we will be emailing this agreement to you, for your "E-signature" so that we both have a copy. Our rental agreement is very detailed, but is basically a reiteration of our 'House Manual', also found at the cabin, and many guests find this helpful to peruse in advance of their stay.

-By booking with us, guest agrees to pay a Security Deposit prior to check-in. Booking guest acknowledges that access to property will be denied until deposit is paid & rental agreement is signed. Both items must be finalized at least 5 days prior to your stay. Payment is collected via paypal, venmo or personal check & is refundable if: all guests honor rules & no damage is found. Refund of deposit is initiated after check-out (usually within hours of your check-out). Our goal is to provide a full refund of your security deposit. Security Deposit must be paid at least 5 days prior to check-in, and is typically 50-75% of the nightly cost of your stay (not the total), though we're open to discussion, as we want guests to be comfortable with the amount. *To date, we're happy to report that we've been able to return all security deposits in full as of this policy change! We want both parties to feel protected & comfortable, so if you’d like to request a chat about the deposit, please feel free!

-All guests staying at the house must be registered in advance of check-in. We require full name, address, phone number, and vehicle information (for vehicles coming to the property) for all guests included in a reservation.

-Cleaning Fees: $165/stay for 7 nights or less, $250/stay for over 7 nights (the remainder will be requested separately.)

-No third-party bookings. Only booked & registered guests may stay at the property.

-Keep noise to a minimum after 10pm (to be respectful of our neighbors).

-No smoking/vaping inside the home, on deck or porches. Smoking/vaping is allowed away from the house in the driveway, but please dispose of cigarette butts and/or vape materials properly. If cigarette/vape smoke is identified in the house, a hefty cleaning fee will be applied.

-Please wash your dishes after use. If dishes are not washed properly, extra cleaning fees may be applied. *Sorry, but the house does not have a dishwasher.

-No food/beverages in the living room/bedrooms. If food is spilled on furniture/pillows/bedding/etc, cleaning or replacement fees will apply.

-Feel free to use the kitchen for home cooking, but please, no highly pungent or odorous cooking that will lead to lingering smells after check-out.

-No shoes in the house (there are boot trays by each entrance).

-Please do not rearrange our furniture without permission.

-No burning of candles.

-Please follow all Check-out rules prior to departure, located in our house manual in the kitchen.

-No extra guests, no parties/events, no illegal activity/drug use or inappropriate behavior. There is a security camera on the driveway which is on at all times - in the event that unregistered guests show up, you will immediately be asked for payment for these guests or you will be asked to leave the property for dishonest booking practices. We understand that sometimes plans change, but in order for all guests to be covered by insurance, all guests must be disclosed. This is a remote area & being asked to leave would not be convenient for you. We do this to protect our home & it's value and our policies. We are honest with guests & we ask for reciprocity for a positive experience overall.

-PARKING: There is parking for 2 cars, side by side, in front of shed. We will help offer parking advice for more than 2 cars.

-This home is located in a natural setting, and has many outdoor spaces (decks, stone paths, lawn, shed, porch swing, etc) where you may see or come into contact with animals or insects (such as squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, birds, bear (on occasion), porcupines, spiders, mosquitoes, bees, slugs, snails & everything in between). If you or your guests are uncomfortable with natural creatures, this home is likely not the right choice for you. Opening & closing windows & doors is an opportunity for bugs to get inside, which can happen! You will not be reimbursed for issues involving natural creatures, spiderwebs, bird poop, etc. We take all issues brought to our attention very seriously, and will treat any serious issues immediately. Seeing an occasional insect however, is not grounds for departure or refund. Please be sure prior to booking that you & your guests are comfortable in this type of natural setting.

-PETS: ONLY well-behaved dogs allowed with prior permission. No other animals allowed. Please have dog's nails trimmed before arrival, as we have hardwood floors throughout. No pets on furniture. (If you think your pup might jump up on furniture, please use dog blanket provided, or bring your own.)

We expect that our guests will simply "know your dog" & take care of our home accordingly. For instance, if you have a dog with short black hair that attaches to everything in sight - don't let the dog lay on our white throw rug (simply roll it up & place in a closet). If you know that your dog might sneak into an unoccupied room & relieve itself, close doors to prevent this. Basically, please take precautions to avoid damage.

Traveling can be stressful for dogs - if you are concerned about your dog causing damage, it must be crated while you are not on site (you must bring crate).
Dogs that have a tendency to eat houseplants should be left home, as there are many in the house. Dogs that have a tendency to "mark their territory" when the scent of other dogs is present should not come along for your trip, as there have been many dogs in the house over the years.
You are responsible for cleaning up after your dog around the property. It is recommended that you do not allow your dog to run freely on property without supervision, as there are wild animals in the area. If there is damage caused by pets, additional fees will apply. A PET CLEANING FEE of $25/night will be collected separately through AirBnb, which must be paid prior to your arrival.

The Pet Cleaning Fee covers the extra time for our housecleaning service to clean: dog hair from carpets/pillows/blankets/bedding (often extra laundering is necessary), doggie nose/paw marks on glass doors & windows, doggie odors throughout the house. Our goal is to leave no trace that a dog was there prior to our next guest.

*Most rentals in this area do not allow guests to bring dogs. This is a privilege that we afford to our guests - please respect our policies so that we can continue to do so.

**We reserve the right to contact authorities or to ask guests to leave immediately should they violate our House Rules.

Winter Wonderland and More

This beautiful cabin has it all! The big fireplace provided the magic that is needed for a snowy getaway, as well as the very large windows that provided a gorgeous view of the perimeter of the property surrounded by trees. The hot tub was a wonderful addition, as it added a relaxing experience to watch the snow fall while soaking in a big hot tub on this very private property. The hosts provided many extra amenities such as organic coffee, tea, seasoned firewood, heated floors in the bathroom, a gift basket of quality snacks, etc. There were big warm blankets everywhere, space heaters, fans, and a fully equipped kitchen. The cabin was easy to get to and the roads and driveway were well plowed for ease of needing to come and go. We even went snowshoeing around their property. The host communication was outstanding when we had a question or needed something. We felt very cared for and will return to this lovely winter sanctuary soon.

Great place to relax and unwind

I loved the porch bed, we even took several naps there. It was very cozy and the pillows and blankets were a nice touch. The guft basket was a wonderful surprise filled with Vermont products. Our dog loved the yard and the stream.

Lovely little get away!

This beautiful property allowed us to unwind and relax on our 29th wedding anniversary. The front porch bed became my morning oasis! So enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and found the property had all we needed! The area is beautiful and we found plenty of places to hike. I think we visited every general store!

Sanctuary in the forest...

The Circe and Hare Lodge exceeded our expectations in every way. Leslie and Matt are phenomenal hosts, and they have created a truly inspiring space that feels perfectly in tune with the beautiful nature that surrounds it. We fell in love with the craftsmanship, design elements, and attention to detail throughout. This is the kind of place where one would welcome being snowed in all winter. Pure magic.

City Escape

The owners of this cabin added so many thoughtful touches such as fresh flowers, a guest basket, fresh eggs from their chickens in the fridge, bathrobes, etc. We were joking that they must watch Vacation House Rules on HGTV b/c they have thought of everything the show suggests to make for an amazing guest experience. It was so nice to escape the city for a few days and enjoy the tranquility of this area. I don’t think our dog wanted to leave rural living! He barks at every noise at home….he did not make a peep while we were there. The whole experience……communication, check in/out, cleanliness, etc was perfect from start to finish.

Beautiful and Refreshingly Relaxing

Our temporary home was super posh and neatly kept. Felt very cozy and relaxing with fluffy pillows and blankets everywhere. Honestly, you could fall asleep in any room. Aside from good sleep- the kitchen was plentiful with ingredients and an array of fine dishes and cookware. My family agreed that the house is more spacious than it looks in pictures. Our dogs loved it too! It was so awesome that they were allowed to join us. We loved the fact that there are lights on every side of the house so we never felt unsafe at night bringing the pups out for a potty break. There is a stream downhill that made a perfect walking trail. Our experience at the house was ridiculously homey, restful and “vermonty”. As well as the owners- super nice folks with great communication for any questions and/or suggestions for restaurants, shops, or even about things around the house. Would 100% recommend booking here!

Enjoyed our stay at this cosy house!

We were there during a cold, snowy VT winter week, but the owners have thought of everything to make this a comfortable stay. The kitchen was outfitted with everything we could have wanted to cook meals. Our 2 adult sons joined us for a few days (extra cost per person/per night) and there was plenty of comfortable seating for all even though the house isn't large. It was a 20-25 min drive to Craftsbury Ski Center where we skied everyday. The Highland Center also has trails and is a 15 min. drive. We would stay here again!

Relaxing Holiday Trip

We had a lovely visit to Leslie and Matt's cabin for Christmas week. They were very accommodating and even put up a tree with lights to keep us in the festive mood! The beds were comfortable, the linens nice and cosy, and the kitchen well stocked with necessities for cooking. We made prodigious use of the fireplace and appreciated having access to the extra firewood. Leslie and Matt were very communicative throughout the stay and even left us a little treat from the brewery down the road (which was sadly closed while we were there). Highly recommend and hope to come back in summer to enjoy the outdoors.

Cozy cabin weekend retreat

My husband and parents enjoyed a lovely post-Thanksgiving weekend at the Circe and Hare Log Cabin! The cabin was exactly as pictured, well-appointed, and super cozy. Leslie and Matt had thought of everything from a well-equipped kitchen for cooking meals, plenty of firewood to create cozy evening fires, to really comfy robes for lounging! Communication with hosts was quick and responsive, check-in/out was easy, and my family found the detailed information book really helpful and clear -- which was much appreciated. We look forward to staying at the Circe and Hare again. Thank you Leslie and Matt!

Peak experience at peak foilage

What a great find! The owners have shown a terrific attention to detail and have really focused on making this cabin a special getaway experience. From really nice welcome goodies to a binder full of hikes and towns to explore to a wonderful firepit to celebrate fall evenings, they have put a lot of care into every corner of the cabin and property! Don't miss the Barr Hill easy hike. We also enjoyed the much harder Lake Willoughby hikes, the bike trail, and exploring Greensboro (including a concert in their really nice arts center). Note: don't believe your GPS if it tells you to turn right out of the driveway to get to towns like Burke- it soon becomes a logging road that cars cannot negotiate and come out in one piece!!!

A little bit about Matt & I, and how Circe & Hare Lodge came to be~ 21 years ago I started an organic gardening business & have a background in art. I have a keen eye for creating beauty, inside & out! I’m wholeheartedly devoted to doing right by the environment, starting with our local ecology. In addition to having my hands in the dirt everyday, I consult with homeowners & am actively doing speaking engagements with groups to promote organic gardening. I am currently writing a gardening column for a newspaper to spread awareness for eco-friendly landscape practices. I love gardening, dancing, being physically active & hanging out with our dog, Ted. I installed the gardens at the cabin, but I'm just getting started there! I plant in a naturalistic style, which I call wildscaping. Matt is a musical instrument-maker whose work is highly sought after worldwide. In addition, he's co-owner of a business that specializes in accessories for drum sets. He maintains a client list of the who’s who in music and loves his work in the music industry. He also has a deep appreciation for architecture, furniture & design - all of which he poured into our cabin!

Why they chose this property

Circe and the Hare- We hung one of our favorite paintings on the wall “Empire of Mind”, painted by a good friend & amazing artist. This woman with antlers, sitting in a snowy landscape, reminds us of the mythological goddess “Circe”. Standing back she looked so magical and right for the space, as if it were hers & she was there to watch over it. We couldn’t resist naming the place after her! Now, for the Hare. We're in love with the snowshoe hares of Vermont (and all wildlife, really). Snowshoeing in the mountains around the cabin our first winter, we found endless snowshoe hare tracks, but with the snow-white coats they grow for winter, they remained elusive to us. We never spotted one until one day in spring, after all the snow melted, a very curious snowshoe hare appeared on the back deck peering into the glass door at us! Since then he visits often - after all the times we came downstairs for our morning coffee and were greeted by him, we knew we had to dedicate the cabin to this little trickster as well. As for the cabin, Matt and I spent over a year and a half renovating entirely ourselves. It was a true labor of love, we set out to make it artistically and uniquely ours and never thought of it as a rental. It’s our home away from home & we love sharing it with people who appreciate the same things in life. We want our guests to be comfortable ~ as if it’s their home away from home. Greensboro, Vermont is a very special place, & if you find yourself here you’ll probably notice that there is something more about it than just being scenic and beautiful. Chances are you won’t be able to put your finger on exactly what makes it so wonderful, but you'll know that everything just feels right!
