About this property

Casa Don Carlos a Gorgeous Colonial House!

Casa Don Carlos, your vacation dream house!

Imagine your Nicaraguan getaway set in a beautifully unique and tranquil location… The warm evening air filled with the sound of cascading water, eating your meals in an open-air garden, walking a few blocks to the charming Central Park…

This Spanish Colonial house was fully restored in 2007. It is located in a wonderful neighborhood of Granada City, Nicaragua. The exquisite details of this three-bedroom home include beautifully intricate colonial tiled floors, Spanish architecture, an interior courtyard with a peaceful garden ornamented with a Spanish fountain and a volcanic rocks cascade to create a perfect peaceful sound.
The hand carved Nicaraguan furnishing, integrated arches between the living-room area and the corridors give the house a very open and airy ambience and allows the eye to enjoy all the exquisite details that surround the interior of the house.

The layout is open-air style. The kitchen is set between the corridors surrounding the courtyard and the living-room area. The two bedrooms are tucked away on the first floor sharing one full bathroom. Both rooms are equipped with full size beds and air conditioning.

The Master Suite has a queen size bed, a private elegant full bathroom, spacious closets, air conditioning, and is located on the second floor. It has access to a porch surrounded by beautiful verandahs to enjoy sitting down having your breakfast, relaxing, preparing for the day, drinking the excellent Nicaraguan coffee, listening to the birds and the sound of the beautiful morning filtering down into the courtyard.

One of the most enchanting features of Casa Don Carlos is on the 3rd floor. The “ Mirador” offers a beautiful view of the Mombacho Volcano with all the wild hills which allows you to see although from afar, the northwest of the oldest Colonial city of the American continent..

Casa Don Carlos is the perfect place to call your home as you explore this rich and beautiful country and begin your memorable vacation. Although described as Colonial, this beautiful house presents some modern characteristics that were added during reconstruction by the owner which is a very talented architect. Inspired by the beautiful Greek beach houses he added an interior arch between the living-room and corridors thus creating a more open and exotic space. The kitchen area moved from the back of the house toward the corriodors allowing a more cozy cooking atmosphere surrounded by family and friends. Moving the kitchen toward the patio needed some adjustments, therefore this house does not have a dining room area. A more modern note to this colonial design is given by the addition of a large counter and full bar that can be used as dining space. The patio is also equipped with a full bar so that you may enjoy a relaxed evening atmosphere without the need to go into the house to make your drinks. You will find this re-design very pleasing, combining perfectly the colonial style with the modern, adequate for the new living standards of our times. ~

Short stay

I came to Granada because I’ve never been here and wanted to see but getting around was hard since I had to get a taxi to go to town and there was a group of drunks making nosies by the door, but otherwise the place it’s very cute and comfortable.

Old world style and charm

What a cool experience! We got to pretend we live in the city of Granada, lodging in our safe haven full of style and history. I have always loved the idea of having a courtyard within my house. The garden area not only provided beauty, when we sat around reading our books, but also amusement as we observed the turtles, who abide in the hidden foundation. We only spent four days there but we already have accumulated much fondness for Anselmo, the caretaker of the house. He is such a lovely man and we are grateful for that he time he spent with us; explaining how things work, answering our questions, sharing of himself and his story. We didn’t arrive until 9:30pm and when we asked about a grocery store, Anselmo offered to drive us there that night so we could have stuff in for breakfast.

Overall, a nice place to stay

Leaving off 1 star for two reasons: 1. Power consumption: Old air conditioners and old-style lightbulbs throughout the house contribute to high power usage - they should be replaced for efficient models and LED lights. 2. Bed cover is synthetic and not very pleasant to sleep under (for me). Beyond that, a great house. Anselmo the property manager is super-nice and accommodating. Would stay here again.

Beautiful home a bit far from the center

The home is beautiful and the caretaker- Anselmo is a lovely man with stories and a beautiful smile. The walk to town was a bit far for us with young kids- so we took taxis a lot. Also one room downstairs had no mosquito net and we got bitten alive. We asked for one but got a can of insecticide instead- not ideal with young kids around. Hopefully they will fix that. Otherwise a lovely colonial home.

Great character home

Our family had a fantastic time in Granada over Christmas thanks to this lovely house. The location is fantastic, the house is charming, the garden is beautiful and the price was right. It is a 10 min walk through the bustling market to the main square. The owner was very responsive and helpful and we would definitely recommend this place to anybody. Fantastic house!

Casa Don Carlos - Can't get better!

My husband and I had the chance to spend 5 weeks at Casa Don Carlos, a wonderful experience in a beautiful environment. The house is really spectacular and has everything a modern home needs. Being Canadians, we were impressed by the fountains and flowers, Rosita the parrot and guardian of the house, the gardens, the lovely woodwork on the doors, cupboards, etc…it’s called luxury. Our main concern (besides the weather) was safety. With the family so close, the alarm system, the features of the doors/windows and the location of the house, we even managed to make friends with the neighbours, and our concern stopped as soon as we entered the house. On the contrary, we were adopted by the family who were so generous and so helpful. The house is always clean, thanks to Mathilda and Tatiana, Carla’s local cooking was a delight and the help for everything from Carlos was priceless. Everyone in the family participated in our Spanish lessons correcting our errors while trying to keep a straight face as we wrestled with grammar and pronunciation. The house is located close to the action: the market, the parque centrale and the heart of old Granada. Access to buses and tours is easy, and really we had a great stay in Granada complete with the feeling of coming back home every night. Even though we have been back for more than 2 months, we miss the family and the fantastic weather. A really great place for vacation. Many thanks to the Goussen family who made it all happen.

Beautiful and relaxing

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay with our three year old son. The home is beautiful, with two fountains, a lush garden, and lovely, comfortable furniture. My son enjoyed visiting with the two parrots (feed them your fruit scraps!) and three turtles. It is located about a fifteen minute walk from Granada's central square (or a 50 cent shared cab ride) and a ten minute walk from the central market and a major supermarket. The home is so beautiful and relaxing, and we so enjoyed spending time there, we didn't do nearly as much exploring of Granada as we had planned. We look forward to returning again soon.

Beautiful family, beautiful house

I rented this house for 2 weeks in the summer and was thrilled. The pictures don't do it justice. The house is so beautiful and relaxing. Everything is top notch. The best surprise was the family that took care of the house. They treated us like family and helped us with anything we needed. They taught Spanish to our kids, helped us find reliable drivers and advised us on travel plans. We still keep in contact with them today. What a treasure.

A wonderful and luxurious base for exploring the Granada area

The photos on the VRBO site are great, but don’t fully do justice to the care and detail taken to build and furnish this house. I loved to “open to the sky” patio the home is built around - with two fountains to fill the home with the sound of running water. I can’t think of a nicer setting for sitting down and writing in my journal with a cup of café con leche than the patio table. There are lots of quality architectural details which accent the home throughout – you’ll feel like you’re one of the “muy ricos” Our girls especially loved the hammock and the parrots – which greet you with hola. There’s even a turtle in main fountain. The rooms are air conditioned and the mattresses were super comfortable – so it was easy to sleep here. Oscar’s brother was there to shown us around when we arrived and Oscar even called us from San Francisco to welcome us and make sure to call him at any time if we had any questions. Oscar’s sister-in-law and niece came by each morning at 7:30 AM to give the place a thorough cleaning. The internet was definitely slow, but usable and there are free international calls to most countries. The house made a great base to explore the Granada and the surrounding area. We didn’t opt for a car, but mainly walked, took buses and rented some bikes. There is plenty to do in the area – but after a long day of exploring this or that – when you got back home and opened up the door to walk into the house, it always felt like you were walking into a welcoming bit of paradise.

My name is Oscar R. Goussen native of Granada Nicaragua, I was born 1 block away from Casa Don Carlos and the name of my house was given in memory of my father. I live in Redwood City California with my wife Anca and our son Ancarlos.

Why they chose this property

I bought this house and restored it as a Vacational House. Calle Palmira is the gate to Mombacho Volcano and to the Isletas de Assese, close to the Farmer's market, Supermarkets and Downtown. It's probably one of the best locations in Granada as it is not quite in the heart of the City yet it's so close to all best places.

What makes this property unique

The main benefit when I spend my vacations here is the peacefulness and relaxed atmosphere that soothe my mind, body and soul as a perfect therapy session. My eyes enjoy the view of the house with its elegant details and the amazing scenery. My vacations never seem long enough and I always dream of coming back.
