Villa Merlata is in Conca dei Marini, a fishermen’s hamlet located between Amalfi and Positano. Villa Merlata is a watch tower which dates to mid sixteenth-century. During that period several watch towers were built along the coast of Amalfi in most panoramic places in order to protect people from raids by the Saracens coming from the sea. Torre Merlata is one of the aforementioned watch towers, and it has remained intact up to nowadays as it preserves the elegant merlons of the battlement or crenellation on its top, which renders it unique all over the coast.

The tower stands high on a prominent stretch of coast about 100 m (about 328 feet) above sea level. From its top, your eyes will behold a vast panorama of sea, the picturesque Cape of Conca dei Marini. Every bit of scenery in this area is really breathtaking.

In this area the houses are distributed along a little road carved out on the slopes of the coast. All the houses face the sea and the sun, being separated one from another by their flower gardens, lush vegetable gardens, and small lemon pergolas. Going to the upper/lower part of the village here, just as in all the Amalfi Coast, means taking the several picturesque narrow stone-step stairways. The real inhabitants of the place live here, with their tranquil pace of life away from crowds of tourists.

You reach Villa Merlata after crossing a small square garden paved and fenced-in by an old stone wall.

From the garden an outdoor staircase will allow you to get into the tower. Inside you will have unique interiors, with a really high barrel ceiling. A tall arched window illuminates the room: through this window you will see the Cape of Conca dei Marini from above, which is a subtle green promontory surmounted by an impressive watch tower. It is a view if exceptional beauty which will please your eyes throughout your whole vacation! Those holes which were once ancient embrasures through which arquebuses were aimed at assaulters are now small windows or niches where decorative pieces of local artifact are displayed.

From inside the tower you can reach the top terrace. The floor of the terrace is not flat, but a bit inclined and slopy, just like the shape of the tower’s ceiling. That is why placing a table or chairs on the terrace is not possible. From the terrace you can enjoy a 360° view of the sea and the coast, which is rendered even more enthralling seen through the beautiful crenellation frame.

appartement bien sympathique loin de la foule et du bruit d'Amalfi et néanmoins proche des sites touristiques : navette de bus à proximité, départ de belles promenades

Villa Merlata is a great place to stay

Villa Merlata is a great place to stay. Very clean and in top state, not to forget the great view and the top terrace. Friendly and helpful owner. I recommend Villa Merlata especially if you are going to explore the Amalfi Coast with own or rental car, because it is nearly in the middle and you will have short trips to the top destinations, like Positano or Amalfi. We were very satisfied with Summer In Italy service and will for sure consider booking with you next time in Italy.

We loved Villa Merlata

We loved Villa Merlata. Giuseppe [the owner] was great, the place was really good, the village was super too, unspoilt and really well situated for exploring. The place was cosy and private. Although the lack of private outside seating space and the temperamental shower slightly detracted from this lovely, lovely villa. With minor amendments the accommodation could justify doubling the rates, it is great value. The people at summer in Italy have been excellent too; kind and helpful. Keep up the good work!

We enjoyed our stay very much

We enjoyed our stay very much. The place is splendid, and staying in a tower is quite an original experience. We found your address on the Internet. Everything was perfect. We will recommend Villa Merlata to our friends in Switzerland.

The best part about Villa Merlata is its location and being able to feel that you are living amongst

The best part about Villa Merlata is its location and being able to feel that you are living amongst locals and sampling a few typical days in their lives, as opposed to experiencing the superficial grandeur of a hotel in a busier town like Positano or perhaps the functionality of a B&B along the coastal road. Many of the local people were friendly, warm and welcoming. The surrounding whitewash buildings and plantations added to the peaceful ambiance, and lent an air of authenticity to the whole experience. The history of the charming Villa Merlata, and its relationship to the Grotta dello Smeraldo, made it very special. The heritage and architecture of the building made it very interesting and the decor and layout were appropriately simple. The view from the bedroom through the window and out over the sea is magical and romantic! And it is simply a must to watch a sunset from the terrace which sits on top of the tower - you feel very indulged up there on a hazy afternoon with a glass of wine in hand! We enjoyed Villa Merlata very much! Summer In Italy was prompt in response and efficient, and addressed all our concerns prior to and during our trip.

Vila Merlata is a great place for a couple who wants peace and quiet, and still be on the very beaut

Vila Merlata is a great place for a couple who wants peace and quiet, and still be on the very beautiful (and hence touristic) coast. It is a good starting point for walks, short drives. Everything in the villa works. The kitchen is well fitted, there is a supermarket real close by. In short -- it was shear pleasure. The weather helped, of course.
