Fun and unique getaway

My family enjoyed our change of quarantine scenery at Old Stick Ranch. It was fun to discover unique features in the house throughout our stay. Matthew stocks the house with all of the basics plus extras and is quick to respond to any questions. Our dogs enjoyed running freely in the corral, and the location was great for bike rides on quiet, pretty roads.

Unique, creative location

Property owners have created an interesting visual location with ample accents in terms of decor and lighting. Lots of things to catch your eye, adding warm and interesting environment. The rockers on the porch were great for relaxing and enjoying a mild morning with coffee. The check-in/gate entry system was very convenient and worked reliably, which made for a smooth experience. Owner provides low-key and relaxing activities which is a nice touch (pool in the summer with very comfortable chairs nearby, board games in the house, swings outdoors hanging from large trees to relax in nice weather, a firepit to grill, make s'mores, enjoy beverages). Overall cleanliness looked good!

Fun Place for a get together, but hidden fees make it costly

I booked this property in April for my daughters 2020 graduation from college. I wanted a place to have family and a few friends over for lunch after the ceremony. I let the property owner know in advance this was the plan. He said if I have more than 15 guests I will have to rent the additional property on the site. I told him in addition to the people staying in the house there would be about 12 guests, and asked what he thought. He did not respond, but there was an additional guest fee added to the amount due. We were scheduled to show up on May 7th, on May 3rd he contacted me and stated I have to rent the other property that I have too many people coming. I said the notice is very late and asked how much the additional cost would be. He replied "I told you this a month ago" The additional night at the other property, which is about 30 yards from the main house, it is a container home, was not insignificant. I did not have time to find another place to stay at the late notice, so I paid the rental. Immediately after I paid it I received another payment request for the container unit for an additional fee. This request noted 10 people staying on the property which was not the case, we had 6. I asked him what the charge was for considering we only have 6 people staying. His response was "You are having a party where there will be at least 18 people, if not more, it doesn't matter if they are staying the night. All of these people are more impact on the property and they need to be paid for. " Again, no real way to find another place to stay so I paid it. On Thursday, the day before we were to go I received another request for payment for an additional fee on the main property rental. I did not ask, just paid. We had a great time, my daughters graduation was great. The way this was handled by the owner could have gone more smoothly if additional costs were stated up front. I would not stay again due to the ambiguity concerning what I would be paying for any future stays.

Great escape weekend

The property is exactly as advertised. Friendly goats and buddy the dog greeted us upon arrival. Very clean inside and fully stocked kitchen. The secret room was the absolute highlight of my kids stay. That is… until the hot tub. The grown up side was very comfortable. Master Bathroom door is translucent, with the toilet around a corner. but there is another bathroom for those who are not that married 🤓 the decorations are very cool. Almost like hidden treasures when you are not expecting it. grounds are beautiful in the evening. The assorted chairs are comfortable and inviting. The ranch is easy to find, and convenient distance to several hill country attractions. Our family can’t wait to go back!

Weekend getaway

We enjoyed this property! Just the right amount of oddity for my quirky husband’s 40th birthday party weekend. We learned that goats are relentless until you pour water on them. The owner was on site and very responsive. Wish the pool had come with the giant inflatable pictured but the upgraded deck was a nice surprise! I will say the tenth bed was a loft bunk that would be impossible to reach gracefully. The rooftop deck of the container house on the property was also blocked off, which was a bummer.

Captivating

Old Stick Ranch is more of an experience that a destination. It is clear that Mr. Mahon has carefully attended to every detail. Distinctive Colors, textures, lighting, and surprises. We returned to OSR late in the evenings and found it the property blooming with lights that accented trees, buildings and spaces. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the experience of Old Stick Ranch

Middle of two cities, stay.

My 13 friends and I stayed at Old Stick Ranch. Initially I couldn’t understand why Matthew asked us to book the container along with the main house until we arrived. The main house is a great space for 10 people and less. I’m actually pretty thankful we reserved the extra space. The ranch is tucked away in Leander and at first I was kind of frightened at how far out we were, BUT it was absolutely beautiful. Once we settled in we were really able to get comfortable and just hang out on the property. We were always welcomed by Matthew's 3 goats; absolutely loved them!!! Matthew was also kind enough to make us a fire every night of our stay, without our request. I thought that was a kind touch. We didn’t spend too much time in the house because we had a spartan race one day, which was 1hr away and the other days were spent in Austin. Matthews house was perfect for what we needed this past weekend. Thanks for one of the most unique and fun experiences Matthew... it was a great weekend with our friends.

Girls weekend

The property was definitely one of a kind. It was a great place to stay, seeing the stars without all of the city lights was a treat. The owner was very responsive to our calls.

Screened. In. Porch.

Three words: screened in porch. With the Texas summer heat fading, it was enjoyable sitting on the porch looking at the live oaks and occasionally visited by friendly goats.

Great spot for our annual retreat

We rented the big house at Old Stick Ranch for our annual Labor Day meditation retreat. Between 3 bedrooms, a couch and a couple guys throwing up tents outside, everyone was able to have their own space. The house and property are an art project with beautiful and unexpected details everywhere. There's a large fire pit with lots of seating, a huge screened in front porch, and plenty shade under the live oaks. There's a pool in the corral area that's lit up at night, and it was great to hang out there and look at the stars. There are trailheads on the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve about a 20-30 minute drive away for hiking options. Matthew is clearly creative and has put a lot of effort into Old Stick Ranch, and I hope we have another opportunity to drop by! Oh and you'll be sharing the property with some friendly goats.

Great Getaway Spot w/ Kiddos

This place is packed with charm that made it a really memorable trip for our kiddos. Between the on-ranch goats, the hidden bedroom with indoor grass and the simulated fireplace, our kids will be talking about this trip for a while. Enough comfort for the adults as well. Thanks for the hospitality, Matt, Cheese, Berger and the gang!

Nice getaway, close to a lot of off the beaten path areas to explore

My wife and I brought our 2 children and pup to the property for a pandemic getaway. We had a really pleasant stay. Getting in initially was a little touchy, but once we were in it was a really nice system. The property is nice, it’s a nice spin on a what some would consider a traditional ranch. You can tell the owner really enjoys tending to the property and much of his art adorns the walls within. You might consider this half ranch, half art installation. My boys, 2 and 4, loved being on a ranch and were sad to go when the time came. They loved the goats and the dog, to which they referred to by name. They are still talking about the s’mores. The pool was surprisingly refreshing for being the middle of August. We all enjoyed that. One of the parts I enjoyed the most was the driving to and from the ranch. Shots to Austin, marble falls and other locations are simply amazing. The views and the hill country winding roads truly deserved a sportier car than our family SUV, so take that into consideration given the option. Overall, a great stay. Great owner. Nice place to put your feet up at the end of a long day, kick on the fan and listen to the quiet of the country on a screened in porch.

My name is Matthew I am a son, a brother, an uncle, a photographer, a goat rancher, a philosopher, an Artist, a dog Dad, a sock lover and Lion Hunter (catch and release only.) My favorite cookie is chocolate chip and my favorite movie: "No Country for Old Men." I currently own and live on 7 acres in Leander Hills, TX that is home to myself and two good natured male goats named Berger and Weldon. I have worked as a freelance magazine photographer out of Texas since 1998. I have had the good fortune of shooting assignments all over the world and having my images featured in esteemed publications such as The Atlantic, ESPN, Forbes, Men's Journal, Texas Monthly, Vanity Fair, Wired, The New York Times Magazines and many others. In February 2014 while perusing real estate listings I decided to sell my home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Austin and buy a languishing 7 acre horse ranch that had sat unoccupied for 2 years. With an enormous amount of work, 85% of which I did by myself. In August 2017 I opened the gate to Short Term Rental guests. TheRanch is now home to myself and two male goats named Berger and Weldon. We all welcome you to our home, Old Stick Ranch

Why they chose this property

I chose this neighborhood for the amazing sky during the day, and on a clear night the abundance of stars one can see when away from the light pollution of Austin is amazing

What makes this property unique

This dwelling sits on 7 fenced in acres at the top of a mesa on the down side of the road, making it very private
