Deep Water Oceanfront - Schoodic Surf Cottage

Lobster buoys dot the ocean and seals pop their heads out of the water. Some of the darkest night skies on the east coast offer incredible stargazing. Schoodic Surf Cottage is located in a private wooded setting on the pink-granite shore in the heart of Downeast Maine.

Relax on the shorefront and watch the waves crashing on the rocks, the seagulls flying, and the lobster men (and women) pulling their traps. Explore real Maine lobstering villages. Buy lobster off the dock and steam them in sea water in our outdoor cooker.

Just five miles from the village of Winter Harbor and the Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park. Drive around the park loop along the rocky shore, while enjoying views of the open ocean and the nearby islands. Take the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor; enjoy the quaint village of Winter Harbor, art galleries, restaurants and even a golf course. There is also a grocery store, 5 & 10 general store, and gas station.

Enjoy the real Maine coast!

Serenity on the Coast

This is our 2nd time booking this cottage because the quiet and the views are incredible, and the hosts are so hospitable and helpful! They appreciate their guests, and it shows in every way! There is NO noise here but the wind in the pines and the water on the rocks outside. It is only a short drive into town for supplies or a meal. You are close to the Schoodic part of Acadia, which is less busy and has unique places to hike or explore the coast. After a day of exploring and shopping, this quiet place is the ultimate in relaxation that you can't wait to return to each evening.

Another Great Week at SSC!

We had another amazing summer vacation at Schoodic Surf Cottage! This place is a gem! This year we saw the eagle that landed in a tree on the front lawn for about 30 minutes, harbor seals playing in front of the property, and dear wandering through the lawn several mornings. It was a relaxing week, already looking forward to next year!

House with a view

This was our first Time in Maine and our stay at The scootic peninsula home could not have been nicer. The view was spectacular, home was tastefully decorated... In fact, the wall art kept me busy for hours! Everything was clean, comfy and the hosts are awesome. Location could not have been better and I'm so happy we chose to stay in prospect harbor and not bar harbor... Way too many people! Every morning we woke up to an amazing sunrise, hiked for hours and ate lots of lobster! I would recommend this house to anyone who enjoys perfection next time we're in Maine, we know where we're staying! Thank you for a wonderful stay. Cheers! Sharon and Bill

Another Great Schoodic Surf Cottage Vacation

This was our 5th year staying at SSC. The slower side of Acadia National Park in the Schoodic Penninsula allows us to enjoy all things Maine at a relaxing and enjoyable pace. We especially love the ocean front location of the cottage and the great hosts. Looking forward to next year!

An early spring getaway.

We loved our stay at the Schoodic Surf Cottage! The location is stunning. The sounds and smells of the surf on the granite coast are healing. The amazing sunrise. The SSC has everything you could ever need and the hosts made the visit more like a stop at a friend's house than a run-of-the-mill house rental.

Another Great Vacation By the Sea

This is our 3rd summer at Schoodic Surf Cottage. We love this lovely cottage and feel so fortunate to be able to spend time right on the ocean. It is obvious that the owners, Kent and Lynell, take great pride doing all they can to make sure their guests have the best stay possible. We are looking forward to returning next year!

Idyllic Week For Small Family

Visited with my wife and two young children (8 and 5 yrs old). Great owners, very communicative; clean home and beautiful location; away from tourist hotspots but only a 30 min ferry ride or hour's drive to Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, and other Mount Desert Island attractions. Enjoy!

Relaxing Ocean Retreat

This was our second year at Schoodic Surf Cottage! We so enjoy our days of sitting by the ocean, watching the tide come and go, reading, and slowing down in the beautiful Prospect Harbor. This cottage provides an idyllic Maine experience. We had a wonderful time exploring the Schoodic Peninsula, eating lobster and whoopee pies, and picking blueberries. Looking forward to next year!

Absolute gem!

We try to get to Acadia every year and prefer the less crowded Schoodic area, which is close enough to MDI without the crowds. The Schoodic Surf Cottage was perfect for our Maine vacation. It is an absolute gem in a great location. You can see beautiful sunrises, ocean views and unbelievable night skies all from the deck and back yard. Even our mini dachshunds loved sitting on the deck watching the wildlife and lobstermen on the water! The house is clean and well maintained. It also has everything you need in a stocked kitchen, if you want to prepare your own meals. We also enjoyed the art and curiosities hanging on the walls! There are great views from the master and spare bedrooms upstairs as well (where you can see the sunrise and go back to sleep). The Sylers are exceptional hosts. Kent checked in on us with a phone call shortly after we arrived and gave us helpful information about the house and area. Thank you Kent and Lynell Syler for your home and hospitality!

Wonderful Stay!!!

From the moment you arrive at SSC you know you are in a special place. Hosts truly care about your stay and call upon your arrival to answer any questions. The property is wonderful, quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed exploring Schoodic, Acadia National Park and towns along the way. Take a puffin cruise on a lobster boat. Sit out and gaze at the stars at night. A perfect place. Thank you.

Perfect Setting

This is our third visit to Maine and our favorite house! The view is beautiful, the house decor and details are perfect. We love being close to Schoodic and driving over to the more crowded Bar Harbor when we desire. The kids loved fishing off of the rocks and even finding crabs and starfish after high tide. They equally loved the indoor and outdoor games provided. Just a perfect week thanks to the thoughtfulness of the owners. We will return!

Nature Always Rejuvenates

We had a glorious time. Wonderful location, amazing views full of wildlife, tranquility and access to great hiking. The house is clean, well maintained, stocked kitchen, fresh white towels/bedding and comfortable beds (no sagging mattresses). We saw eagles, loons, snow rabbits, seals, porcupine, porpoise, deer, frogs, spiders (not the scary kind), butterflies and a spruce grouse. The mosses are a floral category unto their own and so vibrant. We experience a white sun along with the numerous moonrises. We will be back.

relaxing coastal Maine vacation

Schoodic Surf Cottage is wonderful! This is our second stay in this house, which we highly recommend. It was clean, inviting, and gave us our own slice of the rocky Maine coast. It feels like home but with the added enjoyment of being in Maine close to Acadia National Park and Schoodic Point as well as so many other wonderful things to do and places to visit. If you need a place to recharge your batteries in a relaxing environment, this is the perfect place to do it. The hosts are very responsive and provide informational tidbits to make your stay that much better. The addition of air conditioning made the house a heavenly respite after a day of activities. Kudos to the hosts and those who help to make Schoodic Surf Cottage so welcoming.

The best

Everything about this home and property is perfect -- location, view, house and especially the thoughtful details from the owners, who clearly take great pride in both owning and hosting this magnificent little piece of Maine and want to make sure that you enjoy it as much as they do. The surrounding towns and nature opportunities are just what we wanted -- friendly, casual and off the beaten path. But also, don't feel bad if all you want to do is stay home, sit outside and enjoy the view. That's how we spent a lot of our week here, lulled by the sound of waves as we slept and enjoyed our days. We left refreshed and happy. A real find!

Wonderful find. Delightful spot. Gorgeous, tastefully decorated and very comfortable home.

We were extremely pleased. The pictures don’t do justice to the property. The home is gorgeous. Plenty of room and very well furnished. Our hosts seem to have thought of everything down to the smallest detail and couldn’t have been more accommodating. You will see lobstermen at work (if you’re up early enough) and the eagle visited us 3 times. We also saw plenty of seals and porpoises in the bay. Schoodic was a quieter alternative to MDI with many opportunities for fun hiking, biking and visiting small seaside towns.

Fall Escape

This property was perfect for our fall escape. You can see amazing sunrises, breathtaking ocean views and unbelievable star filled skies on the property. We enjoyed being away from the more populated areas of Maine but close enough to explore Schoodic peninsula, Bar Harbor and Jasper Beach. This house has everything you could ask for if you want to prepare your own meals. I highly recommend purchasing fresh lobsters off the boat in Corea. Everything you need to steam/boil the lobsters is provided, including instructions. Best lobsters I ever had! We also had some great food and drinks at the Pickled Wrinkle and the Treehouse Grill, both a short ride away. I would definitely rent this house again when we come back to Maine.

Remote rocky coastline hideaway

This home was perfect! It was very comfortable, clean and off the beaten path on the beautiful rocky coastline that is Maine. Right next door to the Schoodic Peninsula part of Acadia National Park, and not too long of a drive to Mount Desert Island. There is an extremely well organized book the owners put together with TONS of information on where to go and what to do in the area. They checked in on us with a phone call shortly after we arrived and gave us even more helpful information about the area. We experienced a power outage during a storm while there and they made sure that a generator was turned on while the power was out. We were well taken care of! And, if the power does go out, or the weather isn't conducive to outdoor activities, there is a great variety of books on Maine, plenty of games to play and puzzles to do. Or, just sit and watch the waves hitting the rocks. Either way, it's relaxing and fun. I would definitely come back to stay here.

Wonderful!

This was our first visit to Maine in general for myself, husband, sister and brother-in-law, all in our 60s. This was the perfect house to base our week visit to the Acadia area after having traveled up the coast from Boston. The beautiful rocky coast water view and the updated kitchen and baths were the selling points for us. We loved sitting on the back deck for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. Such a quiet peaceful area. I much preferred this to staying right on Mt Desert. We drove over to hike some trails a couple days and the 1 hr drive was expected. Luckily the crowds seemed better after Labor Day weekend. We ferried over from Winter Harbor to spend the day at Bar Harbor one day and it was a really pleasant 45 min ferry to view the coast from the sea. Spent 2 days enjoying the quieter less visited Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia. The house is very clean and has all needed supplies, including paper goods, plastic baggies etc. I appreciated all the wonderful artwork on the walls! Would come back again for sure.

Our new home away from home

We had the chance to spend Thanksgiving at the Schoodic Surf Cottage this year. In a year where everything has felt a little upside down, it was the perfect respite. Every night we fell asleep listening to the waves crashing in against the rocky coastline. The first night, Kent called us to check-in and make sure we had arrived safely and to offer some tips on the local area. We explored several of his suggestions and saw some incredible beauty and wildlife including several bald eagles (one that likes to visit the cottage), harbor seals, porcupines, and lots of deer. The power went out while we were there after a storm and Kent personally checked-in with the power company, called us to give us an update, and offered to have their caretaker come over to start a generator if we needed it. Inside the cottage is gorgeous, comfortable, and well-stocked with everything you could need. We did a lot of cooking while we were there and had everything we could want in the kitchen. By about the 2nd night driving back from more gorgeous Maine coastal scenery, the SSC cottage felt like more a home than our place back in Atlanta. It was so hard to leave and head back to Georgia. We are so fortunate to have stumbled on this property and the wonderful people behind it - Thanks, Kent & Lynell! We look forward to coming back to stay again soon!

Dream Vacation in Downeast Maine

No sleeping pills were needed. The crashing sounds of waves hitting the back-yard granite boulders of our vacation cottage was all the sleep aid needed in the heart of the “Land of Lobsters,” to wit, the Schoodic Peninsula in Downeast Maine. The setting was specifically “Schoodic Surf Cottage,” a two-story, three bedroom rental that sits directly over the ocean’s “Downeast” coast nestled between three harbors, Prospect, Winter and Corea located about 30 miles from the more well-known Bar Harbor. To land-locked Tennesseans, the setting was not only therapeutic and picturesque, but educational in touring America’s last operational sardine processing plant, and the experience buying fresh-caught lobsters ($7 a pound) straight off the boats. As land-lubbers, we realized we had not previously experienced the spectacular fresh succulent taste of truly fresh lobster, until you’ve cooked them on the cottages’ outdoor patio over a Bunsen burner in a pot of boiling sea water straight out the ocean. One of the truly most “blessed” experiences came when the chickadees would fly up and softly land on our raised cupped hands, and eat their morning meal of bird seed. This was almost “a spiritual” experience to be this attuned to Mother Nature there by the seaside. How exciting was the total experience? We’re booked to go back to Schoodic Surf Cottage on the Schoodic Peninsula in the fall. And it’s a truly affordable cottage, that is sparkling clean, complete with a full kitchen and breath-taking views of the cascading ocean waves and fleet of working lobster boats.

Here's a moral dilemma. Schoodic Surf Cottage is one of the, if not the, best VRBO's we have rented. (And we'ce stayed in many.) However, its booking schedule is so full that we had to reserve it two years ago to get our two August weeks this year. We are torn about making it look even more attractive and encouraging further competition for dates. However, the truth should be told. We have been vacationing in Maine occasionally for almost thirty years. We kept wanting to find a place with rocky shoreline and crashing surf and never succeeded before. We finally found it here. (The waves are not always crashing but that's a nit to pick.) In addition to the gorgeous view from the deck and the living room, SSC comes with its own dependable wildlife: harbor porpoises, snowshoe hares, sea otters, hummingbirds, a young buck deer, and, the most amazing, a pair of bald eagles, one of which regularly perched at the top of the trees in plain sight of the deck. (We have watched it there for an hour or more at a time.) The house itself has very comfortable beds and great views from the two upstairs bedrooms (we watched gorgeous sunrises and the super blue moon from our bed). The kitchen is the best equipped of any VRBO we have ever stayed in. There's even a coffee grinder! (The knives are sharp and cut things. If you don't understand the importance of that, you've not stayed in enough VRBO's.) In short, this is a phenomenal place. Please do not book it! :-)
