Beautiful old farmhouse in a gorgeous setting! Plenty of space for our family to roam and enjoy meals and games together. Host Brit was amazing and quick to respond. The area was close to all that the beautiful island offers. A fun and relaxing family week…we hope to come back again!
We felt at home instantly in this historic home in Somesville. The bedrooms were comfortable, with good light, and the living space and screened porch were so pleasant. Our family of 7 was very comfortable. Outside, the flat, grassy yard was perfect for frisbee and soccer. Also, our son loved taking the canoe out onto Somes Pond to fish. Overall, very happy with the property.
My husband and I and our 3 young adult children and a friend stayed here in early-mid August. Somesville is kind of in the middle of Mt. Desert Island -- Bar Harbor side and the Echo Lake side are about equidistant. There are 6 bedrooms so everyone could spread out. The property is off what seems like a private road. Somes Pond is right outside, so our kids used the canoe to explore the pond. The fireplace was very nice to use on the one rainy day and a couple of cool nights.
The cons: Bar Harbor is overrun w tourists at this time, so demand outstrips supply at every turn (hotels, restaurants, and esp parking). You feel like everyone is trying to make a buck off the out-of-towners. So the price is high for what you get, basically everywhere. For this house, there are only 2 bathrooms, only one of which has a shower. The front door doesn't lock, and many of the windows don't either. We didn't have anyone come in and steal our stuff, but I kept worrying about that. The seat on the canoe was broken so my husband rigged one with a bungee cord he found in the barn. The kitchen faucet is old and splashes everywhere. The upstairs sink is the very old fashioned kind where one faucet has hot water and the other faucet has cold water, so you can't ever get warm water. The cleaners had not emptied out the ashes from when the fireplace was used before us, so we had to do that. There is no air conditioning, but wasn't an issue during the time we were there.
We had an incredible week exploring Acadia. The house was fantastic- full of history and charm, gorgeous views and well appointed. Brit was wonderful to work with. She had great tips about making the most of our Acadia vacation. It was hard to leave.
Lovely historic home with plenty of room in a serene location. The owner was great and easy to deal with. The house is situated in convenient area on Mount Desert Island
This June and July, our family (2 grand parents, 4 parents, 2 teenagers, 2 dogs) spent 2 weeks at the Babcock house in Somesville. We loved the 200+ years old house filled with antique furnishings., surrounded by a lovely field and gardens. A stately old Elm overlooked the yard. We had a couple of very cold days when we spent hours playing games in front of a fire in the spectacular fireplace. On hot days, we were able to kayak to Somes Pond to check on the Loon family there. We played croquet in the yard and, of course, visited Bar Harbor biking and hiking trails, and charming towns. We highly recommend Cafe, This Way in Bar Harbor and Cafe Drydock and Inn in Southwest Harbor. Brit Babcock, who managed the house was great fun, very accessible, and helpful. Her family sold their Mt Desert Pies at the bottom of the driveway and, as a family of 8, we ate an AWFUL lot of them. Rhubarb Strawberry was a favorite. As you can see, we loved the variety of adventures we had, learning about Somesville history, hiking, swimming, kayaking, and being with each other after a year of isolation. We highly recommend the Somesville house! Brit, thanks for the good time!
