Dali-Figueres: Salvador Dali, the great master of surrealism holds a great appeal for visitors to the Catalonia Pyrenees & Costa Brava. Figueres, Portlligat-Cadaques and Pubol (in l'Emporda Catalan region) form the three corners of Salvador Dali's Triangle.
Born in Figueres on May 11, 1904, Salvador Dali became one of the greatest geniuses of the surrealism and one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Its biography and its work extends on the major part of the century and suppose an attractive trip through the ideas, the culture and the art of the Western world.
Salvador Dali's loved the Emporda cuisine. Dali talks about cooking in his book 'The Secret Life' and even dedicated a cookery book to Gala 'Les diners de Gala' (Labor 1974), for which he painted 12 illustrations. The fact that Salvador Dali grew up amidst a family from l'Emporda partly explains his weakness for gastronomic delights and his insistence, from the age of six, to become a cook.
Calonge and it's surroundings: Calonge is within easy reach of Barcelona and Perpignan (France), half an hour from the beautiful city of Girona. An excellent starting point for visiting all the cultural and natural sites of Catalonia.
Along the coast, between Platja d´Aro and Sant Antoni de Calonge and Palamos, two tourist resorts which share the bay as well as their tourist character with the one mentioned first, there are Sa Cova, N´Artigues, El Comtat de Sant Jordi, Roque Planes, Torre Valentina and Treaumal, attractive places, all of which lie 1km from Calonge inland, a lovely village with a medieval layout crowding around the castle of the Dukes of Sessa, which was built in the XII Century.
Calonge has medieval old centre with narrow streets. It has many remarkable old buildings.
The old maritime part, Sant Antoni de Calonge, has developed considerably through tourism along the beach which continues as far as Palamos. There are plenty of restaurants and bars.
