About this property

High Cross Camping Coach and Living Van

The accommodation that we offer is a railway carriage and Living van. The Carriage has been restored retaining many authentic carriage details like chunky carriage handles, brass lamps, window straps, and sliding sash windows, combined with good quality modern comfort. The main saloon has a large seat which converts into a double bed and sleeps two people, a small dining table and chairs, and a fantastic fully restored French 'Monopole' circa 1910 coal stove, which will keep you warm on cold damp days and cold nights. A fully equipped kitchen with microwave/oven and 2 ring induction hob, sink fridge, and work surfaces provide ample space to cook for yourselves during your stay. The bathroom has normal water flush domestic type loo and electric shower.

The carriage sits within a small enclosed garden at the rear of the owner's cottage garden. The view is beautiful over meadow fields towards distant hills, with a spectacular view of the sunset.

As part of the letting, the carriage also shares within its own garden a Roadman's Van. similar to a shepherd's hut, but bigger. The van comes as part of the letting providing seating and a table by day and space for 2 single beds by night. Fantastic for children (over 4yrs), and adults alike.

The carriage and van are situated 5 miles from the Jurassic coast at West Bay. There are many good beaches within a 20-minute drive including Charmouth for fossil hunting, Lyme Regis, and Burton Bradstock. There is fantastic walking along the South West Coast Path or lovely inland walks near the carriage location. The area offers many places to explore including Bridport's many antique shops and a twice-weekly market. Mapperton House and gardens and Abbotsbury children's farm, gardens, and swannery.

Great for a weekend away

We had a great two night stay, the train carriage is beautiful and the setting was fantastic. Marion the host was very helpful. I would recommend to anyone looking to escape the bustle of the city for a few days.

Unique and quirky stay

Fantastic accommodation. The carriage was well equipped and perfect for a short stay for myself and my 2 dogs. Plenty of places to visit and lots of walks in the surrounding area. Despite the bad weather it was lovely to come back to the carriage to relax in the evening. Would definitely recommend it as a perfect getaway. Look forward to the new carriage

Cosy and warm even in November

We very much enjoyed our two nights in this unusual, neat and quirkily appointed camping van. It was a great place to come back to and within easy distance of Bridport, Lyme and Charmouth. I was concerned it might be a bit chilly in November but we were warm and comfortable.

Most unique and delightful accommodations I’ve ever stayed in!

My 8-year-old daughter and I were planning to go to Cornwall for a holiday but when we saw this amazing VRBO listing in Dorset, we couldn’t resist. The accommodations and the lovely hosts didn’t disappoint. This was by far the most unique place I have ever stayed in and we absolutely loved our time there. We were there for three nights and it was so comfortable and enjoyable. We had plenty of space between the carriage and the living van, as well as the private garden they were situated in. We ended up hanging around both mornings because it was just a fun place to spend some time and relax. The owners were incredibly friendly, helpful, and pleasant, and we would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Fantastic stay in this unique railway carriage.

We stayed for 2 nights and our friends stayed in the living van, which was in the garden. The railway carriage has been beautifully restored and has everything that you will need for a comfortable stay, including a real stove for keeping the van warm. The bathroom needs to be shared by the people in the living van but that wasn't a problem for us. Plenty of towels, bedding etc and even tea / coffee for our stay. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and I would definitely recommend this as a fabulous place to stay. In order to really benefit from the stay, I would recommend a minimum of 2 nights Thank you

Magnificent and unique experience.

Hosts were welcoming and accommodating; our 2 boys loved learning about the restoration of the train carriages. Charles and Marion were a big part of making this stay so special for the boys. The train carriage and hut were fabulous - offering a unique experience. Clean, tidy and well equipped. We will be back again to explore the beautiful county further as the location is second to none.

Really enjoyed it

It was a very good experience and would happily recommend.Really nice hosts. Some suggestions (intended to be positive): The beds in the road van are too hard, we had to move in to the main carriage on the last night. The views from the main carriage are beautiful and cleaning the windows for each visit would enhance the experience. I hit my head a few times going out of van. I am 5' 8" so not tall, perhaps a warning sign would help.Admittedly this is a 'snobby' comment but maybe avoid using consumables (soap etc) from discount stores such as 'Aldi' because you are providing a 'Waitrose' experience.

The train carriage was very cute. We left early only because of the weather. It made a very different Christmas Day for us. Thank you

Charles loves steam trains, so when he saw this railway carriage on eBay in 2012, we just had to buy it to add to our collection of two we already have in the garden.
We spent two years restoring it, trying to make it into a special space where you feel and see the character of old carriages paying particular attention to detail but having all the modern facilities to make you comfortable.
We live in a beautiful part of West Dorset and feel very privileged to live here and enjoy doing so very much. We love to have visitors because we love to share our surroundings and give them a taste of our paradise. When I am not running the camping coach I teach piano. We have 2 wonderful daughters and a fluffy dog called Rusty and Pip.
