About this property

Beachfront, close to everything

Enjoy the grandeur of The Griscom House, a stately 19th Century Colonial Revival home directly across from the ocean. Only a minute from the front door to an early morning stroll on the beach or a bike ride on the boardwalk, this premier Cape May home has been one family’s summer residence for four generations. Listed as a contributing home on the National Register of Historic Places, The Griscom House offers history, elegance and comfort with all the modern amenities you would expect. The rooms are large yet intimate and inviting; perfect for bringing family and friends together for fun and great memories.

It's all about the porches! Picture yourself in 1900! Relax on either of two double wide covered porches with old fashioned awnings, while enjoying panoramic views of the ocean. Enjoy the the cool ocean breezes with morning coffee, or while sipping your favorite summer beverage and watching the dolphins bob by in late afternoon.

This summer retreat provides the ideal location...steps to the beach right across the street, arcade, convention hall, boardwalk shops and nearby restaurants. Only a ten minute walk to the mall for shopping and great restaurants.

The first floor features a spacious central hall and large comfortable living room with seating for a crowd, plus a gas fireplace, a game table, & TV. There is a separate family room on the first floor with gas fireplace for additional space for TV, games, or puzzles.

The fully accessorized kitchen features two large side by side refrigerators with ice makers, a drink refrigerator, a gas range and two dishwashers and garbage disposals. There is a convenient eat-in breakfast room with a separate bar sinks adds to the versatility of the kitchen. There is a separate laundry room with a washer/dryer on the second floor.

The dining room is spacious and grand with comfortable seating for 12 - 14 at the main table, and an additional table for 4 more guests. There is a piano.

Four comfortable and tastefully furnished bedrooms radiate off large center hallways on both the second and third floors with newly renovated baths on each floor plus a 5th bath that is a throw back to the 1890's featuring an antique claw foot tub, plus a modern tiled shower added for convenience.

The 2nd floor has period antique furnishings and oriental rugs. There are five bedrooms on the second floor: an antique four poster canopied bed facing the ocean. Across the hall is an oceanfront king bedroom. This bedroom shares a connecting door with the rose colored king bedroom behind it. Then, across the hall, there are two antique four poster twin beds. You will be lulled gently to sleep while listening to the sounds of the ocean waves at the shore. In the back of the house, there is a charming 5th bedroom with a cathedral ceiling. There is a large outside covered porch, off the large center hall through paired french doors, for spectacular views of the ocean.

The third floor has a fresh and breezy beachy decor. There are four bedrooms, directly over the rooms on the second floor. The ocean front room on the right features a queen iron bed and matching daybed. There is a king bed across the hall on the oceanfront side. The bedroom behind features a queen brass bed. Across the hall, there are 2 extra-long twin beds plus two more singles, for a total of 4 single beds, great for kids or teens. There is a small covered porch off the 3rd floor center hall directly facing the ocean. It just might be the best view in Cape May!

In addition, there is a multi-purpose hang out room on the ground level with a high end murphy bed, for a quick conversion to a 10th bedroom. This space has an ensuite full bathroom.

Most beds have pillow mattress toppers for maximum sleeping comfort. All bedrooms offer TVs and ceiling fans. The entire house has 3-zone central heat/air conditioning.

Cape May is one of the country's oldest seaside resorts and encompasses everything a beach resort should have; wide sandy beaches with life guards, extra wide streets and back country roads for biking, boardwalk arcades for the kids, movies, a paradise for bird watchers, outstanding restaurants and so much more.

Great family friendly getaway

The house was perfect for our large group of friends. We had kids all ages and the house was large enough to accommodate 6 families. Location was perfect, right in the center of town and we were able to walk everywhere. Would definitely visit again!

Perfect Cape May home

We thoroughly enjoyed Griscom house. All of us enjoyed very comfortable beds, lots of space to stretch out, and a very well stocked kitchen. Most enjoyable were the porches overlooking the water! We look forward to coming again!

A beautiful stay in a historic Cape May home!

Our extended family of 16 that included a mix of adults and children with ages ranging from 2.5 - 14 had a wonderful time at this seaside getaway. The house had so many quirky, historic touches from the photographs throughout the house to the architecture itself. It was a 30 second walk across the street to the beach and was an ideal location. We loved the 3 porches that looked out to the ocean - absolutely stunning. The beach chairs, umbrellas and bikes available at the house were a huge perk! A few of the bathrooms could have used new shower liners and some of the bedding could have been updated but overall awesome experience!

Perfect vacation

Couldn’t ask for a better property: - on beach - easy walk to downtown with multiple shops and restaurants - minutes drive to boat tours, parasailing and more - perfect place to watch fireworks - fantastic house! Charmining historic home with plenty of room to spread out. Multiple areas to relax in both inside and out. House was clean and a nice mix of old charm and modern conveniences. Laundry, kitchen and eating space provided ample room for activities. - ample parking Couldn’t think of anything lacking. Plan to return!

The house photo says it all! Fabulous front porches with ocean views.

The house was great with many updates and you just can't beat being ocean front. It was a lot of house for only 10 of us (6 adults and 4 children) but it was so nice to have the large front living and dining rooms that allowed us all to be together. We spent much time on the front porch that has comfortable seating for everyone. Fenced back yard was great for kids to play. Also very nice to have off street parking for our 3 SUVs.

Extended Family Getaway

We arrive to the home from all areas of the tri-state region. We enter this wonderful place filled with charm. It has everything you need to enjoy a restful time with family. Even better, when you just want time alone, you can find a nook inside or outside just to read or watch the dolphins in the ocean. I have traveled often and you just don't find this type of property with such history and charm right next to everything. It is well equipped and the owner is fantastic. You can walk to everything in Cape May and the Beach is right in front of you.

Perfect Location, Really Special

This is an absolutely unique, historic home in the perfect beachfront location! It is beautiful. Sitting on this porch really makes you feel like a Cape May VIP. In Cape May it’s all about the porch and, honestly, we’ve stayed in many houses in Cape May over the years and nothing compares to this. This was also a special event for our entire family, ages ranging from 9-84. Even with 20 people, we had excess room- this house is huge. The owners were a pleasure to work with. They told us in advance that they had just raised the elevation of the house and some items were still in transition. These were very minor things that did not impact our stay at all. The renovations are beautiful and it was impressive to see what must be significant investment going in to preserve this house for many years to come. The other review I read here from the same time period when we stayed is a complete misrepresentation based on our experience.

What a wonderful time we had celebrating my husband’s 70th Birthday. All our children and grandchildren were there. Fabulous Girls Weekend

The Griscom House was absolutely perfect for our group of 19 ladies! The house is even better in person than in the photos! The historic charm mixed with recent upgrades and renovations provided a comfortable first-class stay! The house came well-equipped with everything we needed and even some extras for things we may have forgotten! Horrible experience

The house was dirty, smelt, had live wires exposed, chandelier was hanging off with wires exposed, there was no grass in front lawn, contractor came to the home said that no one should be staying there because it’s unsafe. We left the house after the first night and checked into a hotel. I want money back from them and need to be reimbursed for my horrible experience.

About the host

Host profile image
My grandfather purchased this house in 1936 before I was born. I vacationed here with my family in the 1950's, and with my children in the 1990's. Now, our grandchildren enjoy Cape May!! As you can imagine, this house has an amazing legacy ... there have been a ton of family celebrations here and lots of memories created by us and all of our repeat renters. We maintain it very well, and love to share it with others. I'm on the right in white jacket holding the white doggie, with my daughter, sister, niece and grandnephew!

Why they chose this property

Wonderful location, directly across from the ocean, gorgeous views, close to the center of things, but not commercially congested. Wide covered porches are like extra living space ... just great for hanging out. Primarily residential block of privately owned vacation homes (not investment rental properties) managed with loving care; you are right next to the beach entrance; can walk to the mall in ten minutes; the arcade, ice cream, shops, convention hall, & mini golf are just one block away, several 4 star restaurants are within walking distance. On-site parking for 4-5 cars.

What makes this property unique

Legacy late Victorian period home with architectural details from another era, heavy moldings, door details, and plaster walls for soundproofing! Some period furnishings, yet, all the modern conveniences.
