Group stay for wedding in Lynchburg
Fairview was the most beautiful and "enchanting" as my friend kept describing it place to stay for our weekend in Lynchburg. After the chaos of the wedding weekend, having such a peaceful retreat to come back to was truly a blessing. The brides mother came from Vietnam and had been having trouble sleeping in the US and said she was finally able to get a good night's sleep at Fairview due to how peaceful it is there. We would ask love to stay again!

Beautiful Historic Country Stay
The Fairview was the perfect experience for our family visit. Tons of room, amazing views, loved the kitchen, and host was very responsive and accommodating. Great stay and we hope to make it an annual event.

Perfect spot with 6 private bedrooms
My group of 6 men stayed here for a weekend while we were in town for a Men’s conference at Liberty. Each guy had his own bedroom, large bed, and private bathroom, which suited us very well. The guys loved the quiet location, rolling hills, farm animals, and quirky peacocks. This 150+ year old house with a rocking-chair-porch that faces the mountains was the perfect stay for us—we’ll be back!!

A family celebration
Jennifer, our host, was very accommodating. The house was as presented on the website. The kitchen had everything we needed. Unfortunately the weather was very cold so we did not take much advantage of the area.

Beautiful setting!
I stayed at this lovely property during a work conference with coworkers. It was wonderful to come back after work and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The house was spectacular and had great space for all of us to have our own bathroom and the ability to have quiet time. Only concern was it is actually about 25 minutes to Sweet Briar and not 6 as advertised. Also, its advertised as dog friendly for up to 2 dogs and I was charged a fee for each one. Would suggest adding that too. All in all it was a great experience.

Gorgeous view and full of historic charm
The main house is gorgeous historic house with beautiful floors and chandeliers in every room! The mountain view is spectacular! Peacocks roam the property and horses are friendly. The main house is a bit rustic and could use some TLC, but full of history and charm! The owner was responsive and quick to answer any questions we had. The only improvement we would suggest is to make it clearer in the listing that there are three rental houses on the property, so the amenities listed (hot tub and fire pit) are shared with the guests of the other houses and the hot tub is at the front door of the smallest rental space. We were not aware of this until the day before we arrived to check in. Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay and would come back!

Quick stay
Last minute stay for a family funeral. Worked for our needs. Rooms were nice & beds comfortable. Some of the furniture in living area could use an upgrade. Everything was usable. The fridge has no shelves on the door & missing some in the freezer as well. Limited on space for groceries if staying longer. Note that it is not as close to anything as the description & map implies (not an 8 minute walk to McDonalds). I liked the peacocks that wandered and the other animals. This house is a historical house. Would love to have known the history of it.

The Fairview
The house and property are beautiful. There are horses and peacocks. The furniture and beds are both beautiful and comfortable. It was the perfect space for our family. The location of the house is about 20 outside of Amherst, VA. The map on the VRBO site shows the house in town which is incorrect. The weather was very cold during our visit, and some of us were cold during our stay. This is quite common for old houses. The property owner was very helpful and communicative. We were sad to have to leave early to avoid a winter storm. All of us agreed we would go back, maybe in the Spring or Fall.

Dont do it.
The house has the potential to be an amazing space; however, it is not yet there. Here is our experience... There is a long driveway to the house and when we arrived the driveway was full of holes and the holes were full of water. Jennifer did reach out and inform me of this, but here is the problem..one both sides are fence, and the brush is briers and not kept properly. One of the ladies' cars got scratched trying to get through. Now the house...the house had a bug problem. Yes, the house is historic and with that comes nooks and crannies, but the third floor had a HORNET problem and it was not cleaned properly, so we could not use it. The second floor for the most part was fine but it had certain bugs in it as well and also was not cleaned properly. The one room on the first floor had a spider problem and one of the ladies got bit twice and ended up at the urgent care so she and the lady who took her missed the first part of conference! I informed Jennifer of the bugs and the response was to leave a can of spider spray near empty and wasp spray on the porch. I will give this to her, she did respond when I reached out to her so the communication was not a problem. After we battled the hornets with wasp spray and the spider spray was applied in its room, the 4 ladies who happened to have those rooms could not stay in there for the fumes. They slept in the parlor. That is not what they paid for. We paid for an extra night and had to leave due to conditions.

Disappointed .....no horses, no heat and MICE!
We arrived at the Fairview Inn Bed and Breakfast on October 18th. When we first came in, we were greeted by a strong gas smell in the kitchen, but the rest of the house did not smell so we unpacked and went to bed. The propane tank was actually running low and ran out on Tuesday, which hampered us from cooking that day & night and left us with no heat on a night of freezing temperatures. Additionally, when there was propane the gas fireplaces did not work well. We had to meet the propane truck for a fill-up instead of the staff meeting them. On the first morning we discovered a live mouse caught in a sticky trap and making noises in the kitchen. By October 20th, we found mice running around in the house day and night making noises and leaving droppings. When we asked the owner, Ms. Kilgore, and the staff about what they were going to do about the rodent infestation, they said that they were just going to put out some more sticky traps. Ms. Kilgore said that there was nothing she could do about the rodents since the bed and breakfast is ‘just a farmhouse.’ This was very unsettling since this is a business. Also on the first morning we found that there were no horses on the property, contrary to what was advertised. This was very disappointing to my daughter who loves horses and wanted to spend the week with them. We also found that many of the rooms, specifically the kitchen and the living room and kitchen, were not as advertised. There is also no sauna shed available to use although it is advertised. Besides mice and heat, On October 21st, things only became worse. We experienced unprofessional treatment from the cleaning woman, who left wet sheets and towels in the washer for us to deal with twice. She also told us we could not use the washer and dryer. Furthermore, the refrigerator went out during the night, ruining approximately $100 worth of our food. After communicating all of our concerns to Jennifer on the night of the 21st, she offered a full refund if we vacated the property by 10:00 AM on October 22nd. We accepted her offer and were off the property by 10:00 AM with all of our belongings. This caused us to have to find other lodging at the last minute. Normally, we would have just gone home earlier but we had business in the area that had to be attended to. Since then we have received no communications from Jennifer and have not received the refund she promised.

Extremely disappointed!!!
I booked the cottage for a graduation weekend and put down a large deposit. We e-mailed back and forth and said we would keep in touch. I Called two weeks before arrival and was told by the owner that's my weekend was no longer available. I had forgotten to send final half deposit30 days out but also never got a reminder or request from owner and she rebooked without even contacting me to see if we were still coming. I was devastated because everything else in area was booked for the graduation weekend. I believe the lack of contact was intentional because of a higher offer for the rental. Also I haven't received a penny of my deposit back!!! Looks like similar things have happened to others. BEWARE!!!

Thanksgiving Gathering
Nothing like gathering the family in an out-of-the-way Italinate farmhouse with peacocks! Kitchen well equipped. Decor over the top. Super comfy bedrooms. Handful of glitches: no ramps for wheelchair accessibility; buffering annoying on single sports TV channel; glitchy gas fireplace logs.

6/10 Okay

Great location. Handicap accessibility poor. Live sports viewing poor (buffering)
Meet with family from various east coast locations. Lots of room. Great kitchen. We were confused about accessibility. Not a location for wheelchair or walker. No cable or satellite. Only live sports option was one ESPN channel which required frequent buffering delays. Gas logs did not work properly. They never got hot, cycling off/on on their own schedule.

amazing place
My husband and I were part of a group staying there for a wedding the weekend of 8-6-11 and this property was amazing!!! Lots to do, we enjoyed the area (though we were very occupied with wedding details). Very rural and somewhat secluded but a small drive to Lynchburg. We are most definitely staying here in the future!!!!

Spectacular is right!
Fairview was heavenly! We stayed over July 4th weekend and thoroughly enjoyed everything about this property. If you are interested in peace and quiet, away from the hussle & bussle of life -- this is the place to rent. Being surrounded by farm land with the Blue Ridge Mountains out the back porch was simply serene. We had fun cooking in the gourmet kitchen, taking a dip in the hot tub, reading in the provided robes on the rocking chairs, sitting in the sauna, watching the Arabian horses, peacocks, and cows, along with... hiking at nearby Crabtree Falls, boating at Mill Creek Lake, and visiting Saunders Farmers Market. This would be a great place for family gatherings, as there are five furnished bedrooms and plenty of elbow room in/around the mansion. Oh - and our pooch had a great time too! Hope you fall in love with Fairview, as we did !

A gracious bucolic interlude
Four of us, including my 90 year old mother, returned to Fairview recently for a four-night stay. Having stayed at Fairview approximately 10 years earlier, when it was in other hands, we already had pleasant associations with the place. We couldn't have hoped for more, our fond memories were not disappointed and we found many improvements and enhancements had been made to the establishment in the meantime. Fairview's setting couldn't be lovelier and its gardens, peaceful repose, and resident menagerie encourage lollygagging. The viewshed and Fairview's two welcoming porches are an invitation to watching cows, flreflies, sunsets, and, most dramatically, lightening storms along the Blue Ridge. With five generous bedrooms (one on ground level) and four bathrooms, the main house can very comfortably hold a group of up to ten. The spacious public rooms lend themselves to entertaining and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped. The historic nature of the residence and its sensitive renovation, stewardship and furnishing contribute to an almost "other worldly" experience. This is a spot of great beauty and tranquility and, equally, within striking distance of many interesting things to do and see, such as wineries in Afton, the charms of Nellysford, Charlottesville's many sites, and greater Amherst and Nelson counties many places of interest. We found Fairview to be very well appointed and maintained, with many guest needs anticipated and supplied for. Guests requiring cable TV, access to the web, and stable cellular service be forewarned: a highly connected lifestyle is not easily achieved at Fairview, although our group adjusted and became adept at finding sweet spots for cell phone service. Fairview truly wraps visitors in its mood and comforts, surrounding one with history, nature, vistas and tranquility. I hope to return.

Happy, happy bicyclists!
Our 10 person bicycling crew lodged at Fairview for 2 nights while cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway. Aside from the spectacular mountain vistas, the morning fog arising from the valley, and the horses, cattle, and peacocks, the house itself was magnificent. Lot's of good beds, and a fully stocked kitchen. Power cyclists can ride the 20 miles up (note: UP!) to the parkway, or sag up if you want an easier alternative. Highly recommended!

A Beautiful Visit
Our stay at this property was most memorable for my husband and I, along with our daughter and her husband. We used it as a base for daily trips to Monticello (highly recommended) and other historical sites, as well as all of the wonderful hiking and mountain activities. We ate at restaurants recommended by Jennifer and we all enjoyed them. The house is large and comfortable, and I had photo cards made of the wonderful sights and scenes that we enjoyed on the property. The peacocks, especially Big Daddy, provided a lot of free entertainment. My daughter even went back to DC with a new kitten. Thanks Jennifer!

Storybook Christmas
Fairview was perfect for our family Christmas vacation. Eight adults shared this lovely house for six nights. The property is accurately described on VRBO; the pictures don’t do it justice. The house is elegant yet comfortable. The property is quiet and pastoral. We enjoyed the beautiful vistas from every window; Fairview is the perfect name for this house. Arriving after dark on Christmas Eve we were thrilled to find Fairview beautifully decorated for Christmas. The house appeared to be glowing with warmth from the lovely light fixtures and the gas log fireplaces. It was truly a “storybook” Christmas for us complete with snow on Christmas Day. From inside the warm house we watched the white Arabian horses romp in the field and the peacocks, chickens, and ducks, strut across the yard. We especially enjoyed the dining room table which seats 8 to 10. We lingered long at the table after every meal and gathered around it for card games, conversation, and lots of laughter. We slept soundly and well in the comfortable beds which are appointed with high quality linens. The owner was so kind and patient with me as I asked numerous questions before our stay. She responded promptly and thoroughly to all my emails. My daughter-in-law wants us to spend every Christmas at Fairview. She will get no argument from me!

Amazing Girls Weekend in the Mountains!!
We had an amazing time at fairview this weekend! When we arrived and toured the house we could not help but keep huge smiles on our faces. After seeing the downstairs bedroom we thought that we would all have to fight over it but each room we went into was just as charming and wonderful as the one before it. The house was beautifully decorated and the views were breath taking! As a child I visited Nelson county often and I had no problem at all finding my way around. We ate at the devils backbone brewing co. and were very happy with it. The horseback riding was unforgettable and of course the massage was wonderful. We loved the house so much that it was very sad when it was time to leave. I researched a lot of diffrent places in va and nc before deciding on fairview for our weekend away and I was not dissapointed. I am already trying to think of another reason to come back :) thanks again for all your help!!

Best vacation spot in the area
We have rented many cabins and cottages in this area and this one was definitely our favorite. The house and furnishings are absolutely gorgeous, with spectacular views from every window. We also loved the horses, cows, and peacocks all around. We would recommend this rental to everyone and we will definitely be back!
