The view of the ocean and coastal pasture makes guests exclaim "wow" as they enter the dutch doors of this cozy cottage.
This is a place to relax. You can watch the whales play and hear them sing at night. The cows lazily graze through the pasture below with the Big Island of Hawaii off in the distance. Sunrises and sunsets offer stunning colors across the sky. You can also appreciate the views from the comfort of your bed. We have stocked the cottage with all of the amenities you will need to make you feel right at home.
For the more adventurous, there are hikes, beaches, and waterfalls nearby. Haleakala National Park (7 Sacred Pools) is located 4 miles south of the cottage and Hamoa Beach is 3.5 miles north. A small freshwater pond is only 1/4 mile down the road.

Beautiful and peaceful. Perfect location for watching nature, cows and calves, rainbows and the clouds move . Love the 6:00 wake up call by the birds singing!
We were on Maui for 4 days and chose to spend all our time in Hāna at this beautiful and peaceful cottage. We were so glad we did!! There are many amazing sites close by but this charming cottage is a destination in itself. The extensive view of the ocean is amazing and the grazing cows add to the serene scene. We spent many hours on the porch, soaking in the beauty and tranquility. It was very hard to leave.
Extremely beautiful, clean cozy and comfortable. It is right off the road so there is "traffic" noise, but not disturbing. It was a perfect getaway. Mahalo
This was our first time in Hana, we were there for our anniversary. My dad has stayed at this VRBO & loves it. We throughly enjoyed the road to Hana & Hana town - the food trucks were great and we enjoyed hiking & beaches that the area had to offer. Unfortunately it did rain a lot on our trip & we did not get those stunning sunrise or sunset views but overall the cabin was cozy & was as described. We did mention it was our honeymoon, there was nothing special done which is totally okay but one reason I don’t feel the stay was “exceptional”. I also wished there was some basic things like body soap & seasonings as we were staying in respects before and after our visit to Hana and didn’t think to have those things. There is no AC here so if you are someone who likes to sleep in the cold it may be a bit warm! We also lost electricity due to the weather for about 6 hours. The hosts were good to work with & reimbursed us half a days cost due to the inconvenience. There is not much service here so you definitely need wifi! Overall we really enjoyed the stay and it was well kept, clean, and was what we expected!
We wanted to be close to Hana to see some different things on this side of the island. Great place to do so, the driveway was a little hard on our mustang bottoming out with a blind curve on the hill, but overall that was fine. You are close to the road and can easily hear cars, but the traffic slowed down late afternoon. There are some little ants and geckos inside the cabin due to the design, but we didn’t mind that just an fyi. The cleaning lady wasn’t ready for our check in at 3 which was a little awkward; We waited around and got in about a half hour later, she was nice and left to get extra towels because she forgot them but lives close. Everything was cleaned thoroughly besides some ants in the utensil drawer. Wash your dishes right away or the ants come all over the counter. The cows were really fun to watch from the deck, and views were beautiful. We enjoyed this relaxing stay very much but feel the price point is a bit high for the ants. I do recommend this stay, it’s different and unique!
Beautiful little cabin just off the road only 5 miles from Hana and 5 miles from the Kipahulu part of the national park. Best ocean view, saw sunrise, sunsets and several rainbows. Peaceful except for occasional traffic noise.
The setting for this quiet cabin is the view. An expansive view of the ocean and the ranch is seen thru floor to ceiling windows. Interesting original Art on the walls, a big comfy bed, great reading material, and a quiet neighborhood. We dine on the large lanai in the evening, and ate breakfast there in the morning. We left feeling renewed and connected. The location is convenient to the Hana Highway and many great destinations along the way. I highly recommend this cottage in heaven.
If you want a slice of paradise with ocean views, this is the place. We knew that Hana was removed from everything, which we saw as a positive. We enjoyed the ocean views, cows, uncrowded beaches, and local food. We were a little startled when the owner/ranch hand (I am not sure which) was suddenly outside our front door filling the trough for the cows, but once we got used to his daily presence, it was not an issue. Overall a fantastic place.
This was our second stay here and we absolutely love it! If you are looking for a spot to relax and recharge, this is it. Spent hours on the lanai just watching the cows. The house itself has everything you need. We bought groceries and spent most of our three days there, eating out only once. We would love to return again and again.
When I booked it, I was hoping it would be relaxing, quiet and peaceful. After a day hiking and the Taro Festival I arrived at my “happy place”. It was clean, had plenty of amenities. There was wifi and cable TV and a music player. I just sat on the gorgeous lanai, had a drink and relaxed with a book while watching the ocean. The breeze was lovely and then I saw some short fin pilot whales playing out in the ocean. Thankfully, I had my binoculars to watch closely. I wish I could have stayed longer. Maybe next time, it really was an amazing location and comfortable. Thank you. Very nicely appointed.
This place has an amazing view and has such peaceful energy that calms the soul. The birds are wonderful to listen to every morning. We loved the rain, wind , clouds and saw the brightest rainbow. Last night was the most beautiful sunset that we’ve seen here
The unobstructed panoramic view of the ocean from the deck was enjoyed during breakfast, lunch and dinner and also just lounging or observing the cows grazing close by. The kitchen was highly functional as was the smaller bathroom with a larger waterfall shower. Parking right outside the front door allowed convenient loading and unloading for many beach trips and visits to the National Park just a few miles away.
Magical views of the ocean. Perfect way to break up the road to Road to Hana. Very close to the Wai'anapanapa State Park (must make reservations), Hana Lava Tubes, Hamoa Beach and the Pipiwai Trail, so save these stops to visit from this home base. The food trucks are all great ! My Tita's is a must stop for coffee. Stop at Hana Farms for a delicious wood fired pizza or cook in the well equipped kitchen and relax. The only issue we encountered was the beach chairs were not usuable, the owner was not aware of this and was going to replace. 5 star communication and location ! Very happy we stayed here.
We absolutely loved this gem! The area is beautiful and the views are endless. I drank coffee in bed and gazed out at the ocean every morning. We will be back!
The cottage is quiet and peaceful! The view is spectacular! We had coffee and breakfast on the lanai every morning as we watched the rain roll in and out. This place is just perfect for two to relax and unwind after a day of hiking and travel on the road to Hana!
This property was advertised as having a hot tub and that was one of the primary reasons I chose it.
This property DOES NOT have a hot tub and apparently never did.
I will be requesting a refund.
Overall a really good stay. Unfortunately hit some complications that had me stranded as the home owner just happened to be out of town- beware the front door is auto locking so even if you’re just stepping out to your car have the house key in hand! I had also met a centipede for the first time which was also a first for me. Clean house with all of the amenities needed as well a comfortable bed.
We absolutely loved our stay in this cottage in Hana. I cant recommend it enough. It was everything we hoped for. Clean and very comfortable for the two of us celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. The bed was super comfortable. The kitchen provided everything we needed. We cooked on the charcoal grill one night. The porch facing the ocean was magical to have coffee in the morning and cocktails at night. Ocean on one side- breath taking mountains on the other side! Cows grazing and mooing 20 ft. from our front door. It was just amazing in every way! We stayed 3 nights so we could really spend time in Hana and explore and not feel rushed. If you're looking for a place to stay in Hana, just stop looking and book this cottage- if its available! We do recommend you rent a Jeep or similar vehicle so you can easily park at the cottage.
We loved the little cottage. Waking up to the sound of birds and watching them from the deck everyday was wonderful.
The absolute privacy of our deck was a real treat!
The appliances were in excellent condition and easy to use.
The screens kept all insects .
This is a honeymoon cottage even if you’ve been together 50 years‼️💯☮️💖😍
Everything was wonderful! The location was perfect for a relaxing and quiet getaway and the views were beautiful. The house had everything we needed from kitchen supplies to beach gear. The checkin instructions were accurate and we appreciated the detailed instructions. Hana and this house was our favorite stay during our trip to Hawaii and we were so sad to leave!

About the host
Hosted by Michelle Horen
My name is Michelle and I manage this heavenly cottage for an old family friend, Chuck. This cottage is a hidden gem which I hope you get to experience for yourself! I enjoy interacting with guests of the cottage. Their gratitude is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to call this place home.
Why they chose this property
Many of our guests return annually. They all say the photos don't do the place justice. Everyone declares the view spectacular. There are 70 acres of government preserve between the cottage and the shore. Even so, when the whales are here (Dec-Apr), you can hear them splash. Cattle and a few horses abound in the preserve, and you can watch their calf's frolic. A thoroughly restful place. The serene views and private nature of the cottage offer a sanctuary of kinds for guests.
What makes this property unique
Koali Ranch Cottage started out as a vacant lot set aside for a school house. In 1955, the Territory of Hawaii decided that it did not need a school there and auctioned it. Chuck's parents were successful bidders. The Territory insisted that the house be erected within a year. The cottage was designed by local architect John Tatum, working with island famous Val Ossipoff.
