This was my second time at this property and it was just as good if not better because it starts to feel like home. Sheltered from a very windy new year of weather, sunny and the outdoor shower is brilliant. Thank you!
A fabulous place to get away from the world and be immersed in natures beauty.
A wonderful "Kiwi" experience with stunning views and a character bach with everything you need for a comfortable holiday.
A fine Bach overlooking Medlands beach with all one needs for dining on the deck with kaka overhead. Life ruled by the tides and a sofa in every corner for reading and planning the next excursion on wild exotic Aotea
We loved everything about our stay in James’s bach. It was utterly charming-simple yet comfortable with all the important trappings like books, games, comfy sofas and a log fire. And the views are exquisite. The setting is perfect - close to the beach and mountain tracks, and we loved crossing the bridge by foot to get to our sanctuary.
Simply walked in, bedding configuration (3 x queen) perfect for our group in 3 private bedrooms. Well equipped kitchen, with everything required to prepare your own meals. Once we got familiar with the tides, we were able to access the property most of the time (this can change depending on water flow/swell) Thanks so much for sharing your property with us, lovely relaxing end to a very social time on the island.
The property was great with extremely good cellphone coverage, power and views. Access could be a problem as very steep and rental cars not permitted to cross the lagoon.
Excellent holiday at James’ property set overlooking idyllic Medlands Beach. A simple bach with everything we needed for a relaxing, low key holiday. The kitchen was well stocked to cook nice meals, the view stunning and our toddler just loved playing on the front lawn. Communication with James was easy and helpful. We will be back!
A note for future holiday makers: insect repellent is a must and it gets very hot in summer with out being able to use a fan. Lunch at Fat Puku and dinner at Carrach Irish pub and Angsana Thai restaurant were all fab.

Lovely Weekend Away
Great bach...everything we needed, comfortable and great view from the deck. Helped ourselves to blackberries and grapes growing along the roadside as we made our way up the hill :)

Great place if you're after a bach (not a flash holiday house).
Great place if you're after a bach (not a flash holiday house).8 Min walk to beach, beautiful views from deck, three bedrooms (one is a new sleep out). The bach exceeded our expectations.

About the host
Hosted by James Heyward
I love good coffee, simple food, lime & soda, reading page turner thrillers, skiing steep deep powder, sailing fair winds & the sound of an air cooled 911. I’ve travelled widely and enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life and cultures.
Why they chose this property
Medland's beach is centrally located on the island. It’s a short drive to Tryphena or Claris and is a great base for accessing all the other island attractions.
Drive to the Bach or enjoy a ten minute walk along a gravel road with the last hundred meters up a steep hill. If driving you will need to cross the beach & ford a shallow tidal stream at mid to low tide, then drive 500 meters and up the hill. Vehicles can be parked at the Bach or beside the DOC camping ground. The stream is easily waded or use the pedestrian bridge located next to the car park area.
What makes this property unique
The entire island is off the grid and the Bach is on solar electricity and rain water. Fishing, surfing, walk to the hot springs, play gold, read a book or just do nothing. At night, gaze in wonder at the heavens above.
