About this property

Bach 78 Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island

Hi potential guests! The Rangitoto Island Historic Conservation Trust are setting up a new booking system on the Trademe site - Holiday houses, which will go live from the 1st of July 2025. A link to this new site has been added to the Trusts web page.

Until then book here to: Step back in time to a more leisurely age and holiday in a historic Rangitoto bach. Book here to stay overnight on Auckland’s iconic volcanic island.

Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay near the Islington Bay wharf, and Motutapu Island. The bach is a 1 and a ½ hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf or a 2 and a ½ hour kayak from Auckland.

Since the 1920s the baches on Rangitoto have been available to only a few lucky families but now you can join them. Bach 78 has been lovingly restored with the addition of modern bedding, cooking and toilet facilities. Supplied in the kitchen to use are utensils, pots, pans and a 12 volt chilly bin to keep your food cool.

Bach 78 is located directly opposite the Islington Bay Wharf on Rangitoto Island. It has 2 bedrooms, gas cooker, BBQ, solar powered lights and a chemical toilet.

There is a network of well-defined walking tracks giving access to the volcanic features of Rangitoto and the native bush restoration and archaeological sites on Motutapu. The views from the summit of Rangitoto is a must do feature of time spent on the island. Both islands are pest free and you will see native birds and other native wildlife often absent on the mainland.

While the rocky shoreline of Rangitoto can make swimming difficult the sandy beaches of Motutapu are just a short walk away.

Getting there;

Special conditions:

Beautiful

We loved staying on Rangitoto. The baches available are a great alternative to camping and not having to carry in all the gear. Even with a few little luxuries. Location is incredible

Retro wonder

My mum & I had such a wonderful stay at Bach 78. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great, but we were super comfy and cosy in the bach during the storm. We loved that it felt like stepping back in time and was so peaceful and remote. Appreciated the compost outside. We'll definitely return!

Quaint and retro

I loved this little 1930s bach away from it all. Caught a snapper from the driveway! If you dont mind a bit of a hike to get there and a tad bit of roughing it, this place is an absolute gem.

Nostalgic trip in nature

It was lovely and peaceful, right by the waterfront! I saw lots of native birds and had some great walks. It was so nice to step back in time and have some simple days without the constant online chatter and business of modern life. Thanks go to the great property managers Quince and Steph! They were very helpful in showing me how to use the gas hob to boil the drinking water and where the toilet bock is and things like that. Overall a great trip Quince and Steph, who were awesome!
