About this property

The Poplar Place at the foot of South Mountain!

Poplar Place draws its name from the poplar tree siding custom milled for the home. Situated on a scenic Civil War driving tour, the home is the result of a major renovation and addition to an 1840 farm house. The staircase is original as is the kitchen/dining area oak flooring. Six can sleep comfortable with two bedrooms (each with a queen bed) and a convertible sofa. Poplar Place has central heat and air, an all glass living room, stocked kitchen, large master bath and main level half bath.

The basement level of the home is listed separately (the Woodsy Lair), accessed separately and does not share interior common space with Poplar Place. We offer a discount for renting both spaces.

Pets under about 50 lbs are welcomed at an additional fee of $40 per pet, per stay, but must be crated when unattended. I can make exceptions to the fee structure for small dogs or multiple pets.

There is also a wonderful creek that runs through the center of the property. The large yard is fenced and shared with other guests, so please pick up after your pet.

In support of the global effort to conserve energy resources utilizing reasonable practices, we have installed Ecobee “smart” thermostats in all of our listings that the guests can also control. The thermostats are preset with a maximum heating setting of 72 degrees and a minimum cooling setting of 72 degrees.

Gorgeous historic towns are nearby, such as Boonsboro, Middletown, and Thurmont, and even downtown Frederick. Hiking trails as well as state and federal parks are everywhere. Greenbriar State Park is great for swimming in the lake and picnics with the family. Gambrill State Park, at five minutes away, can’t be beat for walking the dog with great vistas of the valley. There are at least five blazed trails of varying difficulty and length. If you like to ski, you’ll find Whitetail, Liberty, and Round Top within thirty minutes drive! For golf it will be tough to choose between Beaver Creek, Musket Ridge, or Maryland National. There are great spas in nearby Middletown or Boonsboro and you can’t beat the shopping at the Hagerstown Prime Outlets, about 15 minutes away.

This is a rural area outside Frederick between Frederick and Boonsboro. Its near wonderful hiking and state parks as well as battlefields and skiing. There's great shopping at the Hagerstown outlets and fine dining in Frederick. (Try VOLT, chef owner Bryan Voltaggio was runner up on Bravo TV's Top Chef!)

Mixed Review

For the history lover, this house is in a good location. Lots of State parks and historic towns to browse., shop and eat at. South Mountain Creamery is fun to visit! Great ice cream! However, it could have been cleaned better. The parking is a tight area that is next to a road on a hill that cars and trucks go buzzy by. There are big bushes that obstruct your view. You have to inch out a little to check for a clearing to pull out. TV service was interrupted several times. The couch was very uncomfortable.

Poplar place lodging

Overall we had a nice stay at Poplar Place. The only drawback was the amount of furniture in the living area and the comfort level which it provided. It would be nice to have a few recliners or a more comfortable sofa but overall it all worked out.

Fun Area, Misleading Listing

This house was very clean (noticeably, the linens were very clean/new). After our trip, my friends and I had multiple discussions about what was worth noting here and felt that it was only fair to let future renters know a few things. 1) This rental does not feel private. There is a rental in the basement level of this house and you can hear EVERYTHING. It says the door to the basement has an alarm system, but it has no apparent lock? None of my friends brought their kids along, but they noted that their kids would have definitely "tested" this door. 2) As a second note, the stairs to the second floor are very unsafe, uneven, and steep (also an issue for kids worth noting). 3) The property also lists that you are able to bring a dog with an additional fee, but the yard is shared with 2 other properties that also allow pets (worth noting if your dog doesn't like other dogs). 4) Lastly, the interior of the house has a smell to it that is being masked with A LOT of air freshener - if you have allergies, this is not the property for you! All that being said the location was very convenient and we enjoyed the view off the back porch - just want to give an honest review so that future renters have all the information to make their decision!

Bright and cozy Cabin

We loved this Cabin inside and out! Has some noise during the day, trucks and cars going by close to the cabin, but we got used to it and the nights were quite and star lit!! We enjoyed the sound of the creek while sipping wine on the back deck. Nice soft warm blankets were available for curling up on the couch with hot chocolate and a movie. The creamery is a must, and breakfast at Dempsey's!!!

Nice place and nice location

Overall it is a great location - central to many places to go and explore. Owner was very friendly and helpful with check-in process and helped to explain other areas our family could check out while in the area. Would definitely stay at this house again!

July 4th Vacation

We found The Poplar House a perfect place for our needs. It is a beautiful property and the house is cozy and comfortable. It is within easy access to parks, battlegrounds, historic towns, wineries, breweries, etc. We enjoyed our stay immensely and we hope to book it again in the fall. (We were a party of 3 for most of our stay and had a 4th person for two nights. We all slept well and had more than enough room. )
