About this property

Stenhuset: Stunning Historic "1877 Stone House"

At the intersection of yesterday and today lies the unapologetically unique and Stenhuset. Meaning "Stone House'' in Swedish, Stenhuset is bursting with modern-day amenities, while retaining its historic 19th-century charm. Built in 1877 by Swedish stonemasons, this historic home embraces its Swedish heritage, as does Lindsborg itself, with celebrations of all kinds: Hyllningsfest, Midsummer, even a Swedish Luau in January! Throughout the year, Lindsborg finds many reasons to celebrate, so celebrate with us!

Utterly charming and with a one-of-a-kind vibe, the Stenhuset house is the ideal accommodation for travelers who choose the road less taken. History buffs will swoon over its intricate period details. Stenhuset is proudly listed on Atlas Obscura!

As you approach this most unique property with its 24-inch-thick stone walls (think of a small castle), you may notice inscriptions in the three stone lintels over the front door and two windows. In 1877 stonemasons chiseled Bible verses in Old Swedish into three stone lintels above the front door and two side windows.

Enter the front door and find yourself falling back into history! The open concept, yet cozy, great room oozes with the welcoming charm of yesteryear with exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, and hand-hewn wood floors.

A colorful and eclectic kitchen provides all the modern amenities for today's travelers, including a 4-burner cooktop, convection oven/microwave, coffee maker and coffee grinder too. You'll find both the refrigerator and the dishwasher hidden behind unusual repurposed cabinetry.

The living/dining area offers a cozy table for two or more, period furnishings, and a pop-up Smart TV to stream all your favorite shows with the included Gigabit-speed WiFi - we provide Hulu+Live TV with no ads. A nearby chest of drawers cleverly conceals a Murphy bed.

Towards the back door of the home on this first level is a bath with an oval step-in shower and simply stunning multi-colored hand-hewn wood floors. The stacked washer/dryer is just steps away, smartly hidden behind a screen door.

As you descend the stairs to the lower level, you will be greeted by an original plaster wall with original, intact stencils. Continue on to a large bedroom suite with a king size Casper mattress and separate private seating area, complete with side table for your book or to charge your device. This suite has plenty of space for all your belongings and features a Smart TV. The en suite bath features an upcycled dresser as the vanity and another oval walk-in shower.

The second bedroom suite is nestled upstairs in the loft, also offering a king-size Casper mattress. A spacious seating area overlooks the first floor of the home, with a sofa and a chair and ottoman.

Each of the two ensuite baths features an upcycled dresser as the vanity with a semi-circular walk-in shower in one and a commode in the other.

While decorated in the grandmillenial style, the all-electric Stenhuset defines carbon-free sustainability. The original 24-inch-stone walls efficiently keep the outdoor temperatures where they belong – outdoors. The interior is heated and cooled with high-efficiency electric heat pumps, often called minisplits. Water for the showers, sinks and laundry is warmed with electric water heaters, again integrated with heat pumps. Appliances are Energy Star cerftified and plumbing fixtures minimize water consumption. The "cedar split" shingles on the roof were formed from recycled milk jugs. And if you drive and arrive with an electric vehicle, we can provide an EV charger with advance notice.

On a pleasant day or evening, enjoy your time outdoors over a cup of coffee, glass or wine, or a full meal at the teak dining table for 6 under a hand-hewn pergola.

Prior to arrival, guests are provided with an entry code that will unlock the front and back doors. Be sure to lock the doors each time you leave Stenhuset.

Contact information is provided near the telephone. Our intent is to leave guests alone to enjoy Lindsborg and central Kansas, unless you really need us.

Lindsborg, Kansas is an artist community that embraces its unique spin on all things Swedish. Larger cities of Salina and McPherson are a short drive away. Post Christmas Mom and Daughter time

We live on both ends of the country so after Christmas we met in the middle to connect and enjoy time together. A perfect home in a beautiful Scandinavian village. We have many memories of visiting with family but this VRBO home was by far the finest we have ever enjoyed... ANYWHERE. We will be back!

Lindsborg Retreat

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely property. Plenty of bathrooms and beds for 4 adults. The beds were so comfortable, my daughter is looking into buying the same kind of mattress. Our stay was short, but if we ever return to Lindsborg, we hope to stay in this historic house. I think I enjoyed reading how they restored the home more than anything! Fascinating. It is such a fun place to stay!

Charming historic home.

We were astounded by the attention to detail in this lovingly restored 1877 home. Each room is filled with period furniture and decor, and at the same time all modern amenities are provided. We look forward to returning to Stenhuset.

Wedding Weekend

Stayed at this unique, historic, 147yr old cottage over the weekend of my son’s wedding. It was immaculate and much more spacious than it appears from outside. Has all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay in a quaint little town. We enjoyed being there and would definitely stay again.

Second time visiting

Me and my husband visited this property last year for our honeymoon, and again this year for our first anniversary. Both visits were amazing. Lindsborg is a an amazing and hospitable town. We enjoyed the many art exhibits and were surprised that each one was better than the last. Stenhouset has everything we needed and is set up beautifully within walking distance of most of the town.

Lindsborg Burthday Getaway

My cousin and I have been going on yearly getaways to celebrate our birthdays. When we walked into the Stenhuest we loved it!! The stairs were a bit challenging, as were the lights and light switches. Before we settled in for a cozy night of sharing old and new stories, we wanted a glass of wine. No wine glasses!! There were juice glasses and very heavy beer steins. We made do but it would be nice to have wine glasses for future guests. We also, could not find any throws, which would've been a comfy touch to take the chill off. The beds were very comfortable but we couldn't find any extra blankets. Overall, we had an enjoyable getaway. Lindsborg is lovely town. Thanks

Adorable

Great little house that was beautifully updated. Fabulous location. Only complaint is the lack of comfortable seating in the living area. They had a neat pop-up tv but only old fashioned chairs to sit on. And being in a town where most stuff shuts down at seven, you’re likely to spend your evening here. Not having somewhere comfortable to sit was annoying. We ended up watching tv separately in our rooms.

Charming and comfortable

We had 3 relaxing and restful nights in this beautiful historic home. We enjoyed the modern amenities mixed with all the historical details throughout the home. The beds are so comfortable and clean with the right amount of pillows and blankets. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked with the essentials like tissues and towels. The kitchen had a great coffee maker and all the tools we needed to make our stay special. The rooms are so well decorated and lit for safety and for maximum comfort. If you have small children this might not be the best place for them because of all the stairs and historical touches like the lamps and chairs. Adults only or adults with a teenage child would be very comfortable. This is a romantic experience close to the heart of the town. We were able to walk to all the shops and restaurants in the downtown area. I enjoyed the personal touch of speaking with our host prior to our stay for the details about the house and our arrival and check in. We were impressed and want to come back and visit again. Of this property is not available we would consider one of the other properties they manage. We stay in a lot of Vrbos and this property ranks high for us.

Lindsborg gem

This home was awesome! The online photos represent well this home, but not like being in person. The renovations are eloquent, very comfortable, with everything we needed for our mini vacation. Tisha was very responsive, and even met us at the home to give us a tour! There is a great outdoor space we spent much time at, and the majority of Lindsborg attractions are within walking distance. The history of this home fits very nicely into the Lindsborg experience. Highly recommend this home!

Stenhuset

Where to start? Words fail to describe Lindsborg & the Stenhuset. Nostalgic memories of an era not that far behind. Reminds of the slow pace things used to be. The property is immaculately clean with all the whims and whistles. It was a perfect place, spread over three levels for a large family which is very convenient to all the action. The only regret was that ours was a very short trip. Definitely will come back again to this little piece of Sweden or should I say Mayberry???

Cozy Stone Cottage Updated Beautifully

We loved our stay at this adorable, newly-renovated and historic home in Lindsborg. We stayed in the cozy and basement suite while our sister/brother-in-law stayed upstairs. With two spacious bedrooms and three bathrooms (plus kitchen) it was very easy and convenient as well as comfortable. The decorative and craftsman touches were just gorgeous and of course the history of the property as well as its location were wonderful. The sitting area needs to be re-thought, however, as the parlor-style chairs just are not comfortable enough for anything beyond a quick visit. Also, I would not advise having small children (toddlers) around as there are lots of stairs and antique pieces that could get toppled over or broken. Perfect for one or two couples. Or a couple + older children. Also we had a little trouble with the coffeemaker - so many buttons to figure out! Overall a really great stay that we would definitely consider renting again! Thank you!

Hello, my name is Jim. As you may have guessed, I am a big fan of Lindsborg, KS for its friendly townsfolk and business owners. Perhaps also because, according to DNA test results, I’m 80% Swedish!
I was the first vacation rental owner in the area and my properties began as a kind of experiment to see if they would catch on. Fortunately, they did and my properties are now warmly embraced by the local community.
While I don’t live in Lindsborg, I have been welcomed into the community as a “local” who just happens to live elsewhere.
When I’m not tending to my vacation rentals, you will find me working in my commercial real estate business, where I own and rent commercial spaces for small businesses and apartments for local residents.
In my leisure time, I particularly enjoy genealogy (not a big surprise there!), traveling, and hiking.
I look forward to welcoming you to my properties in Little Sweden USA!

Why they chose this property

This property was purchased, with two others, as an experiment to see if guests would vacation in Lindsborg, KS. The experiment was a success!
