It was convenient for visiting family members. It was close to family who live nearby. It was clean , comfortable and relaxing . We look forward to staying there again.
My sister and I took our mom away for the weekend and this was the perfect home base for our Fall Color adventures. Everything is so tasteful and comfortable!
We were fortunate enough to be able to reserve this house for our family over Labor Day weekend. It was just the right size for us, very clean and welcoming. Our hosts were easy to work with and all directions for check in and check out were clearly communicated.
We always know that a stay at Daryl and Mary’s will be great! It never disappoints. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay while visiting NE Iowa.
We stayed here a few nights while we went hiking and exploring near Decorah Iowa. This home was a great place to relax and unwind after long day! Tastefully decorated it was such a neat little home and perfect for our little weekend getaway
I loved everything about this place. From the moment we walked in I felt like I was walking in to my home. Cozy and inviting, super clean and welcoming. Everything has been updated but still had the old home charm. We had everything we needed and it was great to come back, sit on the back patio and grill. The fire pit was nice to chill by after a long day. We even had some deer visit in the backyard. I look forward to staying here again in the near future.
A very clean and ideal location Vrbo for our Family to stay during my Dad's funeral service. Daryl and Mary were very responsive to our requests and quite accommodating. Highly recommend this Vrbo if you need a place to stay when visiting Monona. We will be back!
Stayed here as we were visiting the area for a fall weekend trip. Loved the house and that it was close to everything we were doing. Pikes Peek, Spook Cave, Great River Maple Syrup Co all within a quick 10-15 min drive from Manona. Beds were comfortable and the full kitchen was great. Will definitely stay here again.
This was such a nice place to stay while enjoying the Driftless Area and taking in all the sights and having a relaxing weekend. The property owners have done a fabulous job remodeling this old school house into an amazing comfortable home! Everything was just as stated on the listing and beyond! I highly recommend this property!

A wonderfully restful place to stay. The kitchen was well equipped and beautiful.
Great house, nicely remodeled and comfortable. Would recommend adding window AC unit for upstairs master bedroom and extra trash bin outside.
Outside patio with grill was great. We would be happy to stay here again.
This was a great centralized location for our week in northern Iowa. We visited several caves and waterfalls throughout the week in the area and had a blast.

About the host
Hosted by Mary and Daryl Schlein
We are high school sweethearts who have been married for 45 + years. We are born and raised in Monona, Iowa. After raising our family, Daryl retired and we decided this would be a fun retirement project. We are true "do it yourselfers" and have put much love and work into this little home that we lived in when we first got married.
Why they chose this property
This was originally an old school house that was moved to town around 1900. We believe the home was rented out to school teachers. We lived here for 7 years after we first got married. We built a new house and moved close by but held on to this little house. Daryl says its the house we forgot to sell. We have many memories in this home and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
What makes this property unique
We have lived here for generations so if you have local questions we can probably help or send you in the right direction. You will have a private backyard in a small rural town. Tractors drive by daily, as agriculture is extremely important to our area and our family. Wildlife and the natural beauty of scenic rural America is ever present here. We are truly in God's country here so come see for yourself peaceful, beautiful northeast Iowa.
