About this property

Log Cabin w Loft, Hot Tub, Deck, Fire Pit, & WiFi

Summary:
Wildcat Retreat is a cozy cabin nestled in the West Virginia mountains, with everything you need for your getaway.

The highlights:
- Grill on our huge deck
- Relax in the outdoor hot tub!
- Hang out and roast s’mores around our fire pit
- Warm yourself by the living room stone fireplace
- Relax in our jacuzzi spa tub
- Drive 20 mins into Berkeley Springs for amazing restaurants, shopping, and dozens of festivals.

Enjoy!

The Space:
Our family-friendly cabin is packed with amenities and fun for couples, families or small groups of friends.

The cabin includes:
- One bedroom + a loft sleeping area (three beds total + daybed)
- A huge wrap-around deck with a propane grill
- Spa tub with jets in the main bathroom
- Outdoor hot tub perfect for relaxing
- Large stone fireplace in the living room to keep you cozy at night
- Central AC and heat (so you’re always comfortable!)
- Fully-stocked kitchen with a dishwasher, stove/oven, and microwave
- Outside fire pit with seating for the whole gang

We often take our three little kids and dog to the cabin with us, so we're very family- and dog-friendly. Unfortunately we don't allow cats (we're allergic).

Two things to note: 1) the tap water often has a yellow/light brown appearance due to high minerality levels -- specifically iron and manganese. We’ve had the pipes/well inspected and there’s nothing wrong with them; the presence of iron/manganese is normal in this area, and the water is perfectly safe to drink (although it can occasionally have a slight sulfur smell). That said, we have a Brita pitcher with filters we regularly change that you can use; it’s on the kitchen counter near the sink. We also recommend bringing bottled water. 2) This cabin has a wood-burning fireplace and stove that add to its coziness. We recommend you bring your own firewood to enjoy! Also, it's common for a smoky smell to linger in the wooden-interior cabin after use.

Beyond the cabin itself, we love how close to everything we are -- particularly the Great Cacapon River and Berkeley Springs. The Great Cacapon is fantastic for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing throughout the year. And the town of Berkeley Springs has been voted one of the top arts communities in the US; the shopping, spa, and restaurant scene does not disappoint!

Dog friendly Cabin in the Woods

This little rustic cabin sits in the woods of the Cacapon region of West Virginia, about 25 minutes from Berkeley Springs. It is quiet, private, and dog friendly. The hot tub works well, as does the forced air heating. Plates, mugs, and glassware were all nice. I liked the big maple dining room table and benches. Also, the owner was quick to respond to texts. We were here in the fall and enjoyed the beautiful fall colors, and the drive to the Cacapon State Park was beautiful. That said, this place could use some attention. The queen bed mattress sinks in the middle, which led to less than ideal sleeping at night. The fire place insert has seen better days. And even with the flue open, keeping the smoke drawing up and out required vigilance. We got too smoky in the cabin two nights out of three. The flatware was kind of odd, very light weight with white plastic handles and was the size of children’s flatware. The water has a lot of discoloration from iron and smells of sulfur - but this makes sense since we were in a hot spring area. The Britta filter provided did not filter out the iron, so I recommend taking your own drinking water. Finally, outside there were, of course, a lot of leaves covering the grounds, but not enough to hide the tarp, shovel, broken trash can, and other various items laying around the grounds. From the pictures online, it appears this cabin has been well used since they were taken, and could now benefit from an update and some TLC.

Perfect Getaway

My girlfriend and I enjoyed the cabin as a way to unplug and getaway. It was a nice secluded location. We really enjoyed having a bonfire and a hot tub on a cold night!

Not what it seems.

Location was nice. However there is no water filtration and water is yellow and smelled like rotten eggs. No internet the whole time we were there so no TV and the house does not stock any games, DVD's, or puzzles. Glad I brought one with me. Make sure you take stuff to do in case weather is bad and your stuck inside. Also there were no flashlights provided when the power went out due to a storm. Also had to buy a cast iron pan so we could at least cook our dinner in the very smoky fireplace. Had to wash the dog and our coats and his bed cause everything smelled like a fire pit. Take water too if you don't want to drink the nasty well water and if the power goes out. Actually bring everything since this house provided nothing. Bed is also very uncomfortable. Would not recommend this place. If I wanted to pack everything I would've stayed in a tent. Never have we rented a house that literally had nothing and we've rented several over the years.

Restful getaway!

My husband and I had a wonderful time in this warm, peaceful cabin. It is truly tucked into the woods and the silence around us was delicious! The host was so responsive and made us feel really welcome. We hiked every day in nearby parks and enjoyed the cozy cabin. We came home rested and restored.

Relaxing family time

My family and I planned this trip as an after Christmas get away to relax and enjoy each other. This cabin was just that. We spent time playing games ad doing a large puzzle all snuggled in with a fire crackling in the background. We cooked all meals in and found the kitchen with ample supplies (pots, pans, serving dishes) to create each meal. We ventured out to a state park (about 35 min away) for a family hike and enjoyed the views of the surrounding mountains, The host Tony was very responsive with all questions. This is a lovely cabin in the woods. Just what you need if you want to get away and enjoy some time relax.

Nice quiet location

We stayed here for a weekend and it was really nice overall, a little pricey for what it is but I we had a great time. The fire pit is great and there’s lots of space, our dogs loved it. I wish more people would have cleaned up after their dogs because we ended up doing so, so the host didn’t think it was our dogs. That’s not the hosts fault though!

Pit-Stop went by too quick

We made a pit stop at this house on our way to the lake. Great time with the family and dog. Wish we would have had more time to explore. House was clean, check in/out was easy. Quick to answer even after we checked out and realized we forgot something. Would definitely come back.

Cool cabin in the West Virginia mountains

We had a great time staying at this West Virginia cabin on a trip up north. It was secluded and peaceful, and our kids love it playing in and around the cabin! We brought dinner and breakfast for the next morning with us and were able to stop at Berkeley Springs (30 minutes away) on the way out of town.

Lacking

The property is pretty and set off from the main road. The house is rustic. The problem is that there is NOTHING great in the house and NOTHING to do while there---we were there in February. The tv did not work---no volume. The amenities are basic for such a pricey stay. We didn't bring coffee or tea---and there was NONE available. I called AAA for help to get my car out of the snow. Luckily a neighbor w a truck helped me to get out. The house is quaint----but NOT worth the the ticket!

I live in DC with my wife and three young kids. I love camping/hiking, drinking (and sometimes brewing) great beer and wine, exploring new restaurants and shops, and traveling all over.

Why they chose this property

We spent years searching for the perfect getaway, and wanted to be close enough to DC that we could do a day trip. We fell in love with the area – and Wildcat Retreat in particular. We love how cute and cozy our cabin is, and all the fun outdoor activities we can enjoy year-round. :)
