A bit of history:
The Allées de Tourny were laid out between 1743 and 1757 by the Intendant Tourny, on the route of the ancient Lebade, which had served the Médoc since antiquity.
This axis links the Place de la Comédie, on which the Grand Théâtre and the Grand Hôtel are located, to the Place Tourny in the extension of the Rue Fondaudège towards the Médoc. Together with the Cours Georges Clémenceau and the Cours de l'Intendance, it forms one of the boundaries of the golden triangle.
65 metres wide and 265 metres long, it is lined on the even side with buildings with Louis XV facades, intended by Tourny to be "of a graceful and uniform taste". Most of them were raised after the destruction of the Trompette castle on the site of the current Place des Quinconces, as they no longer interfered with the cannon fire. The buildings on the odd side were built in the 19th century. The carousel is present on the square throughout the year.
